Chapter 2

The manila envelope sat on my lap during prenatal yoga. I'd placed it beside my mat, the investigator's report folded inside with the precision of a legal document. Around me, pregnant women breathed in synchronized rhythm, their hands cradling their bellies like promises. I pressed my palm against my own stomach and felt nothing but the weight of what I now knew for certain.

Rhys Mendez. Lake Union condo. Shell company acquisition, February 2019. Monthly visits to Portland documented across eighteen months. Melanie Fox, proprietor of 'Bloom & Thread Boutique'—financed entirely through Mendez Capital subsidiary 'Cascade Holdings LLC.' Six documented occasions with minor child, James 'Jimmy' Fox, age three. Paternity unconfirmed.

I'd read it once. That was enough.

The instructor's voice drifted over me. 'Breathe into the discomfort. Let it pass through you without resistance.' I closed my eyes and tried. The discomfort didn't pass. It settled into my bones like sediment, layer after layer, building something permanent.

After class, I drove home through afternoon traffic, the envelope on the passenger seat. I didn't open it again. I didn't need to. The facts were simple. The betrayal was complete. What remained was deciding what to do with the knowledge—and when.

That evening, my phone rang while I was folding laundry. Portland area code. I let it go to voicemail, then played it back on speaker.

'Rhys, it's me.' Melanie's voice was soft, slightly breathless. 'I just—I heard about the baby. From Gloria, she saw something on social media. I'm happy for you, really. I just wanted to say I understand if things have to change now. I'll figure it out. Jimmy and I, we'll manage somehow. I don't want to be a burden.'

A pause. The sound of her breathing.

'Call me when you can. I love you.'

I deleted the message. Then I opened my contacts and blocked the number. It wouldn't stop her from reaching him—it would only stop her from reaching me by accident. Small mercies.

Two hours later, Rhys came home carrying a distinctive orange box. Hermès. He set it on the bed without ceremony, his tie already loosened.

'For you,' he said.

I looked at the box. I didn't open it.

'What is it?'

'A bag. The one you mentioned last year.'

I hadn't mentioned a bag last year. I'd never mentioned wanting a Birkin in my life. But I nodded, lifting the lid just enough to see the pristine black leather inside. Thirty thousand dollars of apology he didn't know he was making.

'Thank you,' I said.

He smiled—relieved, grateful—and kissed my forehead. 'I made a reservation for Friday. Canlis. I know you love the view.'

'That sounds nice.'

He disappeared into the shower. I closed the box and slid it into the closet, still wrapped. Then I sat on the edge of the bed and ran my thumb over the scar on my left hand until the skin turned white.

Friday evening arrived with the kind of golden light that makes Seattle look like a postcard. I dressed carefully—a navy wrap dress that accommodated my barely-there bump, low heels, the diamond studs Rhys had given me on our fifth anniversary. I looked like a woman who had everything. I felt like a woman who had nothing left to lose.

Canlis sat above the city, floor-to-ceiling windows framing Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains beyond. Our table overlooked the water. Rhys ordered wine for himself, sparkling water for me. The server left menus and disappeared.

'You look beautiful,' Rhys said.

I smiled. 'Thank you.'

'How are you feeling? The baby?'

'Dr. Patel says everything's progressing normally. Heartbeat's strong.'

'Good. That's good.' He unfolded his napkin, smoothed it across his lap. 'I've been thinking—we should start looking at preschools. I know it's early, but the wait lists for the best ones are insane.'

'Sure.'

'And we need to finish the nursery. I was thinking we could hire that designer you liked. The one who did Carter's place.'

'That would be fine.'

He paused, studying me across the table. The light caught the gray at his temples—distinguished now, not premature. Success had been kind to his appearance.

'You're quiet tonight.'

'I'm tired,' I said. It wasn't a lie.

The server returned. We ordered. Rhys talked about Mendez Capital—a new acquisition, a board meeting, some conflict with a Portland contractor that required his personal attention next week. Portland. The word hung in the air between us like smoke.

'How long will you be gone?' I asked.

'Two days. Three at most.'

I nodded and sipped my water. Ice cubes clinked against glass. Across the room, a couple laughed over dessert. The woman's hand rested on her partner's arm, easy and unguarded. I wondered if she knew how lucky she was. I wondered if she'd know when that luck ran out.

Rhys reached across the table, covering my hand with his. His wedding band pressed against my knuckles—the platinum band I'd saved for three months to buy him when we had nothing.

'I love you,' he said.

I looked at him. At the face I'd memorized in a basement apartment ten years ago. At the man I'd taken a knife for. At the stranger who smelled like someone else's perfume.

'I know,' I said.

And I did. That was the worst part. He did love me—in the same distant, comfortable way he loved the penthouse, the car, the view from this restaurant. I was an asset he'd acquired. A foundation he'd built on and stopped maintaining.

We finished dinner in near silence. He paid. We drove home. He fell asleep within minutes, his breathing deep and untroubled.

I lay awake beside him, one hand on my stomach, and stared at the ceiling until dawn.
