Chapter 3

The gallery event was one of those pre-gala warm-ups Nolan loved — small enough to feel exclusive, loud enough to matter. I went because staying home would have looked like hiding, and I had stopped giving anyone that satisfaction.

I found the restroom between conversations, needing thirty seconds where I didn't have to hold my face a certain way. I was reapplying lipstick when the door opened and Dalia stepped in behind me, and the latch clicked soft and final.

I watched her in the mirror. She wasn't crying. She wasn't trembling. She leaned against the counter, arms crossed, and studied me the way you'd study a painting you were about to buy for less than it was worth.

"You look tired," she said. Her voice had no waver in it at all. Flat. Amused, almost.

"I am tired." I capped the lipstick. "Of you."

She laughed — a short, private sound, nothing like the breathy little gasps she performed for Nolan. "You know, for someone so smart, you really didn't see any of it coming." She tilted her head. "The stairs. That part wasn't even hard. You were already off balance from the shock. All I had to do was time it."

Something in my chest went very cold and very still, the way water goes right before it freezes.

"Say that again."

"I pushed you." She said it slowly, savoring each word like she'd been waiting over a year to say it out loud to my face. "On purpose. And losing the baby—" she shrugged, one shoulder, careless "—honestly, that worked out. Nolan needed a reason to stop trusting you. Grief makes people 'unstable.' It was almost too convenient."

I didn't move. I made myself not move, because I understood, somewhere underneath the roar building in my ears, that this was the only version of the truth I was ever going to get, and I needed to hear all of it.

"He'll never believe you," she went on, and now she was smiling — a real smile, wide and unguarded, the first honest expression I had ever seen cross her face in four years of knowing her. "I've spent over a year making sure of that. Every phone call at midnight. Every little crisis. He doesn't see me as a woman he's cheating with, Serenity. He sees me as someone he *saved*. You can't compete with that. Nobody can." She pushed off the counter, stepped closer, close enough that I could smell her perfume — mine, the one I'd recommended to her years ago. "And *The Girl Who Paints* is going to have my name on it. The way it should have from the beginning. You had your turn."

My hand moved before I decided anything. The crack of it against her cheek filled the whole tiled room, bounced off the mirrors, came back at us twice.

She staggered half a step, hand flying to her face, and for one flickering second I saw something true in her eyes — shock, maybe even fear. Then it was gone, replaced instantly by the performance, tears rising on command like she'd rehearsed this exact moment in a mirror somewhere.

She was out the door before I could say another word, already sobbing, already running.

---

I found them in the corridor two minutes later — Dalia collapsed against the wall, hand pressed to her reddened cheek, and Nolan's arms already around her, already furious, already looking for someone to blame before he'd asked a single question.

"What did you do?" His voice hit me low and hard, pitched just enough for the cluster of guests near the champagne table to go quiet and pretend not to listen. "She's *shaking*, Serenity. What is wrong with you?"

I stood there and let it land. Unhinged. Cruel. Jealous of a girl young enough to be your sister. Every word another stone dropped into water that had already stopped rippling months ago.

My left hand pressed flat against my thigh, steady, so no one would see it drift toward my wrist. I didn't defend myself. I didn't need to anymore. I only needed to remember every word.

"Are you finished?" I asked, when he paused for breath.

He stared at me like I'd slapped him too.

I turned and walked out past the champagne table, past the whispers, into the cold.

---

That night, in my studio, I spread the prenuptial agreement flat under the lamp and read every clause twice. Then I opened the little tin of childhood watercolors I never used and never threw away, and took out the business card I'd kept tucked beneath the dried-up pans for two years — a superstition, I'd told myself. Just in case.

The attorney picked up on the second ring.

"I need the filing timeline confirmed," I said. "It has to be legally binding by the night of the Met gala. Not after. Before."

He didn't ask why. I liked him for that.

When I hung up, I slid the sapphire ring off my right hand, wrapped it in tissue, and sealed it inside an envelope. In the morning, I set it on Kensley's desk without a word.

She looked at it, looked at me, and didn't ask.

She just wrote something in her notebook and turned the page.
