Chapter 4

Tuesday morning was gray and cold. A thick mist hung over the Hudson River as I slipped out of the building before sunrise.

I took the subway uptown, rented a plain sedan with cash, and drove north toward Westchester. Nobody followed me. Rhys was asleep in the master suite down the hall from my small room, and Lacey had stayed out late at an interior designer’s studio. To both of them, I was invisible anyway.

The private cemetery sat on a wooded hillside, hidden behind high stone walls and wrought iron gates. The autumn trees were nearly bare. Dead leaves crunched under my boots as I walked down the narrow gravel path.

In my hands, I held a small bunch of white carnations.

Three years ago, I lost our baby at fourteen weeks.

Rhys had been in Zurich closing a private equity deal. When I called him from the hospital bed, shivering through the cold sheets, his voice had been hurried and flat.

*“Grandfather is sending his personal attorney to handle the paperwork, Maisy,”* he had said. *“Get some rest. Don't make this into a bigger issue than it needs to be.”*

Hugo Grant made the nurses sign non-disclosure agreements before the blood transfusion was even finished. To the Grant family, the baby was not a life. It was a mistake. An inconvenient complication that had quietly erased itself. There was no funeral. There were no flowers. Rhys never spoke of it again.

I found the small stone near the back of the property, tucked beneath the drooping branches of a weeping willow. It was a flat gray marker set into the grass. No family name. Just a simple date carved into the stone.

I knelt down on the damp ground. The cold moisture seeped right through the knees of my dark jeans, but I didn't care.

I set the white carnations across the top of the stone.

I didn't cry. My tears had dried up a long time ago.

I looked down at the carved numbers. The wind rustled through the bare willow branches above me.

"I'm leaving," I said. My voice was quiet, but it didn't shake. "I came to say goodbye."

A sparrow hopped along the low stone wall nearby, then flew away into the gray sky.

"I stayed in that house for ten years," I whispered. "I thought if I endured enough, Rhys would look at me. I thought he would see what I gave up. But he never did."

I paused, swallowing the tightness in my throat.

"I'm not leaving because I lost," I told the stone. "I'm leaving because I want to live. I have to survive. You would want that for me, wouldn't you?"

Silence answered me. But it wasn't a cold silence like the penthouse. It felt peaceful.

I reached into my coat pocket and took out my old phone. I framed the shot carefully—the small gray headstone covered by the white petals, resting under the gray morning sky. I snapped the picture. I knew exactly where it would go. I would print it and paste it into the final pages of my private journal, right beside the hospital records Rhys never bothered to read.

Then, I took off my leather glove.

I pressed my bare palm flat against the cold granite. The stone was icy, biting sharp into my skin. I kept my hand there, feeling the chill run up my arm, grounding me to the earth.

I stayed on my knees for twenty minutes. I didn't move. I just listened to the quiet wind and let the weight of the last three years settle into the dirt.

Finally, I pulled my hand away. I put my glove back on, stood up, and brushed the wet grass from my knees.

I walked down the gravel path toward the gate. I didn't turn back.

By early afternoon, I was back in the penthouse.

The apartment was still empty. Rhys and Lacey were at a private tasting for their engagement dinner. The scent of Lacey’s expensive floral perfume still lingered in the foyer.

I went up to the third floor and locked the guest room door behind me.

As soon as I sat on the edge of the bed, the burner phone buzzed inside my drawer.

I took it out and opened the encrypted app. A high-priority message from Ford sat on the screen, routed directly through Leif’s private server.

*We intercepted an encrypted file transfer twenty minutes ago,* Ford wrote. *Originating from Lacey Phillips. Recipient: Desmond Burke.*

My fingers tightened around the phone.

*Lacey handed him your entire profile,* the text continued. *She gave him the timeline of your movements. She flagged Rhys’s upcoming Hamptons birthday cruise as the optimal window for Desmond's team to move. She told him that will be the cleanest opportunity to take you off the board.*

I stared at the glowing screen.

Lacey hadn't just been watching me. She had been coordinating with Desmond the entire time. She knew I was slipping away, so she was setting the stage to hand me over to Rhys’s worst enemy. She wanted to trap me on a yacht in open water, where there was nowhere to run.

And she knew Rhys. She knew that when push came to shove, Rhys would never sacrifice his own reputation or Lacey's safety for mine.

I closed the phone.

In the corner of my room stood an old upright piano. Rhys had banished it up here years ago because he hated hearing me practice downstairs.

I walked over and sat on the wooden bench. I lifted the fallboard.

The ivory keys were cool beneath my fingertips. Middle C. E flat. G.

My fingers rested on the keys, but I didn't press down. I didn't play a single note.

I sat there in the heavy silence for a long time. The dust motes floated in the afternoon light coming through the high window. My heart beat slow and steady.

Lacey thought she was leading me into a cage. Desmond Burke thought he was going to collect his prize. And Rhys thought he was in total control of his world.

They didn't know that when a trap snaps shut, it can cut both ways.

I picked up the burner phone from the piano top.

I opened the chat and typed a single line back to Ford and Leif:

*I know. Let it happen. Be ready.*
