Chapter 2

The sculpture was positioned at the center of the room, lit from above like something sacred.

I saw it the moment I walked in. I think part of me recognized it before my brain caught up — the particular curve of the shoulders, the angle of the arms, the way the figure was posed mid-reach, as if grasping for something just out of range. Ila used to stand like that when she painted. Reaching for the top of a canvas she wasn't quite tall enough to touch.

The room was full of Manhattan's most generous philanthropists, all of them holding champagne, all of them nodding at the plaque beside it. Provocative. Visceral. A meditation on absence.

Amber stood nearby in ivory silk, receiving compliments.

I set my glass down on a passing tray. Carefully. The way I used to set down a pen before cross-examination, when I needed both hands free.

I crossed the room.

The crowd parted without knowing why. People tend to move when someone is walking with that kind of purpose.

Amber saw me coming. I watched her expression shift — the warm, public smile held in place a half-second too long, and then something underneath it flickered. Just once.

"That's my sister," I said. My voice came out quiet and very clear. The kind of quiet that carries. "You modeled that sculpture after my sister's body. You displayed it in a room full of people who never knew her and called it art."

The guests nearest to us went still. The string quartet, somewhere behind me, kept playing for three more bars before trailing off.

Amber opened her mouth. The soft, wounded performance was already assembling itself — I could see it happening, the slight parting of the lips, the gathering of a particular kind of hurt in the eyes. But I had spent years in courtrooms watching people construct their defenses in real time, and I had learned to speak into the gap before the wall went up.

"You don't need to answer," I said. "There's nothing you could say that would make this anything other than what it is. I just wanted you to know that I see it. I see you. And I want everyone in this room to understand exactly what they just applauded."

Her mouth closed. The performance didn't come. For one unguarded moment, Amber Willis stood in front of me with nothing between us, and I watched her realize she had miscalculated.

Then Asher was there.

His hand found the small of Amber's back before he said a single word to me. That told me everything.

"Evelynn." His voice was the low, controlled register he used for situations that required managing. "That's enough."

"I haven't said nearly enough," I said.

"You're making a scene." He looked at me the way he looked at things that had stopped being useful — not with anger, but with a kind of administrative disappointment. "This isn't the place."

I looked at the guests around us. Some of them looked away. Some of them didn't.

"You're right," I said. "This isn't the place for it. She chose this place. I just showed up."

He guided Amber away with a hand I had never once felt at the small of my back. I stood in the center of the room and watched them go, and I did not move until the last of the curious glances had found somewhere else to land.

Lawson was across the room. He watched me the whole time. He didn't move either.

We were home by midnight. I don't remember the drive.

I was in the hallway outside Ila's study when I heard him in there. The door was open. I stopped in the frame.

He had her paintings stacked on the floor beside the fireplace. Her letters were in his hand — the ones she'd written me over the years, her handwriting looping and uneven, always in green ink because she said black was too serious for the things she wanted to say. He fed them in without reading them. One by one.

Then the paintings. The paint blistered and went dark before it caught.

Then the locket.

He held it for a moment. Not with hesitation — I don't think he was capable of hesitation by then. He just looked at it the way you look at a lock before you turn the key. Then he dropped it into the fire.

I watched the metal change color. Watched the photograph inside it — Ila and me, the day I passed the bar, both of us laughing at something I can't even remember now — disappear into the heat.

He turned and saw me standing there. He said nothing. I said nothing. He walked past me and out of the room, and his shoulder didn't touch mine.

I stood in the doorway until the fire burned down to embers.

I did not make a sound.

Something ran down my face. I let it. It was the last time I would ever let it, in front of anything that belonged to him — including his house, including his fire, including the dark that pressed in from every window.

I pressed my thumb hard against the inside of my wrist.

And I started planning.
