Chapter 1

The penthouse living room was quiet until Kenzie Sanders kicked the door open.

It was the ninety-ninth time she had walked in uninvited. I had kept count.

She wore a tight emerald silk dress. Ryker had bought it for her last week with money from a contract I secretly secured for him. Tonight, her hand rested deliberately on her rounded stomach. She was four months along, and she wasn't hiding it anymore.

"Still here, Margot?" Kenzie sneered. She ran two fingers over the marble mantle I had personally picked out in Italy. "You really have no shame, do you? Just sitting around in a home that isn't really yours."

I didn't answer. I sat on the low couch, my thumb brushing the inside of my left wrist. It was a habit I had when I needed to stay still.

Kenzie took two slow steps toward me, smiling like a predator that already tasted blood. She patted her belly. "A man like Ryker needs a legacy. A real family. What good is a wife with a barren womb?"

The insult hung in the air, sharp and ugly.

I looked past her, toward my husband.

Ryker was standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows. He looked sharp in his bespoke navy suit. For three years, I had poured everything into him. I had rebuilt his bankrupt firm from the shadows. I made him the rising star of Manhattan. I had loved him with everything I had.

I looked into his eyes, searching for a single scrap of the man I had married.

Ryker didn't look back at me. He looked down and casually straightened his French cuffs.

"She's right, Margot," Ryker said. His voice was completely flat. It sounded like he was firing an intern over the phone. "A company of my size needs an heir. You can't give me that. It’s just simple biology. We have to be practical."

Practical. That was the word he chose.

Something inside my chest snapped. It was not loud. It didn't burn. It was just a clean, cold snap, like a thin sheet of winter ice breaking in two. The last trace of warmth I felt for him vanished.

"I see," I said. My voice was low. Almost a whisper.

I stood up. I didn't yell. I didn't cry. My hands didn't shake.

I walked down the hallway into my private study. I opened the bottom desk drawer, unlocked the small metal lockbox, and took out a crisp white folder. I had prepared it two months ago, waiting to see how far he would go.

Now I knew.

I walked back into the living room. Kenzie was leaning against Ryker, whispering something in his ear. When I stopped in front of the glass coffee table, I dropped the folder onto the surface.

It landed with a crisp thud.

Ryker glanced down. His eyes caught the bold black heading: *DIVORCE SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT.*

"Sign it or don't," I said. The words came out smooth and chillingly calm. "Either way, this marriage is over."

Ryker stared at the paper for two seconds, then barked out a laugh. "You're divorcing me? Margot, be realistic. You have no money. No career. You have nowhere to go."

Kenzie smirked, tilting her head. "Let her go, babe. She’s bluffing anyway."

Neither of them had a clue.

I didn't waste another breath on them. I turned around and walked into my bedroom.

I didn't take much. I left the diamond earrings Ryker had bought me with my own money. I left the designer coats and shoes. I pulled a single black leather carry-on from the closet. Inside, I placed my personal documents, a framed photograph of my late mother, and a thick black notebook.

That notebook held three years of financial records. Every offshore transfer, every investor connection, and every single deal I had handed to Ryker's company on a silver platter.

Ten minutes later, I walked out the front door. The elevator carried me down to the lobby.

A sleek black town car was already waiting by the curb. The driver hurried out and opened the door for me. I slid into the leather backseat and pulled out my phone.

I dialed a private number I hadn't called in over a thousand days.

The phone rang once. Then twice. It was picked up before the third ring.

"Hello?" a deep, familiar voice answered. It was strained.

A lump finally formed in my throat, but I forced it down.

"Dad," I said quietly. "I'm coming home."

Silence stretched across the line. On the other end, hundreds of miles away in his darkened penthouse study, Thomas Phillips—the undisputed titan of New York—made a sharp, ragged sound. He was weeping.

Then came his voice, thick with tears, but ringing with sudden, terrifying authority. "I'm sending the helicopter. I'm preparing the house. Come home, sweetheart."

By the time the call ended, my father was already barking orders into a second phone. He was activating the city. He was calling the media. The welcome-back gala at The Plaza was being set in motion.

Two hours later, the town car pulled through the wrought-iron gates of the Phillips family estate in upstate New York.

Towering stone walls. Hundred-year-old oaks. The kind of wealth that didn't need to shout.

The car stopped before the grand front steps. The massive oak doors opened, and my father was already standing in the foyer. He wore a simple cashmere sweater, his gray hair slightly disheveled. This was a man who brought Wall Street executives to their knees without blinking.

Now, he looked at me, and his chin trembled. He couldn't speak.

I walked across the marble floor and threw my arms around his neck.

He wrapped his arms around me tightly, burying his face into my hair. We stood there in the quiet foyer for a long time, saying nothing. His hands shook against my back.

Finally, he pulled back. He touched my face with a calloused thumb.

"Let's go into the study," he said softly.

We sat down across from each other at his heavy mahogany desk. I unzipped my bag, pulled out my black notebook, and slid it across the polished wood.

"Everything I gave him is in there," I said. My eyes were steady. Ice-cold. "Show me the dossier."

Thomas didn't hesitate. He pulled a silver key from his vest pocket, reached down, and unlocked the heavy drawer he had kept sealed for three long years.

He placed a thick red folder on top of my notebook.

"Everything he did," my father said, his voice deadly quiet. "Every single sin."
