Chapter 3

I went under the knife at two in the morning.

The anesthesia hit my veins like liquid ice. The bright surgical lights went dark, and the world vanished. While the doctors cut into my abdomen to stop the bleeding, Dakota handled the trash.

He told me the details later. He gave me the security logs and the incident reports. But I didn't need a video to picture it. I knew Silas Bennett, and I knew how cowards acted when real power entered the room.

Outside the operating room, Dakota cornered Silas in a private consultation room.

Two armed guards stood by the door, their hands resting on their holsters. Cielo was pushed into the corner in her wheelchair, clutching her blanket. Her face was pale. She wasn't faking her trembling now.

Dakota didn't sit down. He stood across the metal table, straight and imposing.

He pulled a thick file from his coat and dropped it onto the table. It landed with a dull thud. Then, with a smooth, practiced motion, Dakota reached into his shoulder holster.

He pulled out a black semi-automatic pistol.

He laid it down right next to the papers. The steel clattered against the table, loud and heavy in the small room.

Cielo let out a sharp whimper and shrank into her chair.

Silas stared at the gun. His throat moved as he swallowed. He tried to look tough, puffing out his chest, but his voice cracked.

"What is this?" Silas demanded. "You can't threaten me. Do you know who my lawyers are?"

Dakota didn't raise his voice. He didn't blink. His face was completely blank.

"You have two choices, Mr. Bennett," Dakota said. His tone was as flat as a dial tone. "Choice one. You sign these divorce papers. You surrender all marital claims to Sutton Hawkins. You walk out that door, and you forget her name."

Silas narrowed his eyes. "And choice two?"

Dakota looked down at the loaded gun. Then he looked back up at Silas.

"Choice two is very quiet," Dakota said softly. "And nobody will ever find you."

Silas opened his mouth to argue. He searched Dakota's pale eyes for a bluff. He looked at the two guards by the exit, stone-faced and ready.

He found nothing. No doubt. No hesitation. Just cold, absolute authority.

Silas looked back at the papers. His hands began to shake. The arrogance drained out of him, leaving only sweat on his forehead.

"She's my wife," Silas whispered, though there was no fight left in it.

"Not anymore," Dakota said.

Dakota clicked an expensive pen and set it beside the firearm.

Silas picked up the pen with trembling fingers. He flipped to the last page. He scribbled his signature across the dotted line.

Dakota picked up the papers. He inspected the ink, nodded once, and tucked the file under his arm. He slid his gun back into his shoulder holster. Then he straightened his tie, turned around, and walked out the door without another word.

***

By sunrise, Silas drove back to our penthouse.

Dakota’s team had already come and gone. They moved like ghosts, efficient and thorough.

Silas pushed open the front door. The apartment was dead quiet.

The heavy smell of iron was gone. Instead, the air stung with the sharp, clinical odor of industrial bleach.

The dark pool of blood on the kitchen floor had been scrubbed clean. There wasn't a single red speck left on the white tile.

Silas stood in the hallway, blinking. "Sutton?" he called out.

His voice bounced off the bare walls.

He walked into the living room. The shelves were stripped. Every framed photo of us had vanished. The vacation snapshots from Italy, the small wooden frame from our first anniversary in Bushwick—all gone.

He hurried down the hall and shoved open our bedroom door.

The bed was made with fresh, crisp sheets. He yanked open the walk-in closet.

His side was full of designer suits and silk ties.

My side was completely bare.

Not a dress hung from the rods. Not a pair of shoes sat on the racks. The hangers were spaced neatly, holding nothing but empty air.

Silas ran to the bathroom. He opened the mirrored vanity. His cologne and shaving cream were there. My skin creams, my hairbrush, my perfume—cleared out. The trash can was empty.

Panic finally hit him.

He ran back to the closet and pulled open every drawer. He slammed them shut, then pulled them open again, as if opening them a second time would make my clothes magically reappear.

He checked under the bed. He checked the hallway closet.

Nothing.

It was as if I had never lived there. As if eight years of my life had been erased in three hours.

Silas stumbled back into the kitchen, his chest heaving. His breathing was loud and ragged in the hollow penthouse.

Then he saw it.

Sitting in the exact center of the black marble island—right where my head had hit the counter, right where my blood had pooled—was a crisp white folder.

Silas walked over slowly, his legs stiff. He opened the folder with numb fingers.

Inside was the finalized divorce decree. It was stamped with the official seal of the New York State Supreme Court.

Under my name, it didn't say Sutton Bennett.

It said *Sutton Hawkins*.

Silas dropped the paper. His knees buckled, and he gripped the edge of the cold marble island to keep from falling.

He thought I was a nobody with nowhere to go.

He didn't know I was finally going home.
