Chapter 2

Miriam arrives at noon.

She doesn't call first. She never does. I open the door to my rented apartment in Tribeca—eight hundred square feet of temporary existence, all white walls and furniture that came with the lease—and there she is. Gray wool coat, leather briefcase, no suitcase.

"Show me what you have," she says.

No hug. No "how are you holding up." We don't speak that language.

I step aside. She walks in like she's entering a war room.

The kitchen table is already covered. I've printed everything: shareholder registries, corporate filings, the organizational chart of the Larson Group with every reporting line mapped in red ink. Miriam sets her briefcase down and studies it without touching anything.

"You've been busy," she says.

I hand her coffee. Black, no sugar. She takes it without looking at me.

For two hours we don't speak except to confirm numbers. Miriam pulls documents from her briefcase—acquisition templates, shell company structures, the kind of financial architecture that looks legal because it is, barely. She spreads them across my work like she's laying down cards.

"The Larson Group has forty-two minority shareholders," she says. "Most of them are legacy investors who haven't attended a meeting in a decade. They don't care about the company. They care about dividends."

I nod. I already knew this.

"We approach them through intermediaries," Miriam continues. "Offer twenty percent above market value. Quiet purchases. Staggered timing. Nobody sees the pattern until it's too late."

"How long?" I ask.

"Six months if we're cautious. Four if we're aggressive."

"We're aggressive," I say.

Miriam looks at me then. Really looks. Her expression doesn't change but something shifts behind her eyes. Pride, maybe. Or recognition.

"He gave that woman operational authority," she says. It's not a question.

"Two divisions," I confirm. "As of yesterday."

"He's a fool."

"Yes."

Miriam taps one finger against the rim of her coffee cup. "She'll overreach. They always do."

I press two fingers against my wrist. Count three beats. "I'm counting on it."

We work until the light outside turns gray. Miriam makes calls—her voice low and clipped, speaking to people whose names I don't recognize and probably aren't real. Lawyers. Brokers. The kind of contacts you build over thirty years on Wall Street and never write down.

By the time she leaves, the plan is no longer theoretical.

"I'll handle the acquisitions," Miriam says at the door. "You handle the performance."

"Performance?"

"He's trying to provoke you," she says. "Let him. The more confident he gets, the sloppier he'll be."

She buttons her coat. Picks up her briefcase.

"Mom," I say.

She pauses.

"Thank you."

Miriam looks at me for three seconds. Then she nods once and leaves.

I close the door and lean against it. The apartment is quiet. Outside, the city hums.

I don't feel triumphant. I don't feel anything.

I go back to the table and stare at the shareholder map until the names blur together.

---

Travis takes Hayden to the Metropolitan Opera two nights later.

I see the photos on Page Six the next morning. She's wearing black velvet and diamonds that aren't the ones from Thanksgiving. He's in a tuxedo, his hand on her lower back, smiling at something she's saying.

The headline reads: *Larson Heir Steps Out with Mystery Beauty*.

Mystery. As if the entire city doesn't know who she is by now.

I study the photo for ten seconds. His smile looks forced. The hand on her back is positioned exactly where a publicist would tell him to put it.

I close the browser.

Nadia calls an hour later. "Did you see?"

"I saw."

"You okay?"

"I'm fine."

"Sloane—"

"I'm fine, Nadia."

There's a pause. Nadia's known me since law school. She knows what my fine sounds like.

"He's trying to hurt you," she says quietly.

"I know."

"Is it working?"

I look at the blank wall across from my desk. "No."

Another pause. "Good," Nadia says. Then: "I pulled the incorporation docs you asked for. Hayden Burke's consulting contract is a mess. No non-compete, no clear termination clause, and the liability waiver is practically nonexistent. If she makes one wrong move, the board can bury her."

"Send me everything," I say.

"Already did."

I hang up and open my email. Nadia's files are there, thirty pages of dense legal text that would put most people to sleep.

I read every word.

---

The third gala is at the Plaza.

I'm not invited. I hear about it from Augustine's assistant, who calls to apologize for the oversight. We both know it wasn't an oversight.

This time the photos show up on three different society blogs. Travis and Hayden on the red carpet. Travis and Hayden at their table. Travis and Hayden dancing, her head on his shoulder, his hand splayed across her back.

One blog includes a quote from an unnamed source: *"Travis has never looked happier. It's wonderful to see him moving forward."*

I close my laptop.

My phone buzzes. A text from an unknown number: *Hope you're doing okay. —H*

Hayden.

I stare at the message for five seconds. Then I delete it without responding.

The silence I give them is louder than anything I could say.

---

At the Larson Group headquarters, Hayden starts attending executive meetings.

Carter Reeves mentions it to Augustine, who mentions it to me during one of our carefully neutral phone calls.

"She's making suggestions," Augustine says. His voice is tight. "Operational changes. Travis is listening."

"What kind of changes?"

"Vendor contracts. Staffing. She wants to bring in her own people."

I write it down. "Is Carter concerned?"

"Carter's concerned about his job," Augustine says. "So he's keeping his mouth shut."

"Smart," I say.

Augustine is quiet for a moment. "Sloane—"

"I have to go," I say.

I hang up before he can finish.

That night I add Hayden's personnel recommendations to my files. Every name. Every proposal. Every vulnerability she's creating without realizing it.

Miriam texts at midnight: *First acquisition complete. 6.2% secured.*

I text back: *Good.*

Then I turn off the light and lie in the dark, listening to the city that never stops.

Travis thinks he's winning.

Let him.
