Chapter 2

The photos went live on a Tuesday morning while I was buying oranges at the farmers market in Bridgehampton.

I didn't know until my phone started vibrating against my hip like something dying. Text after text. Calls from numbers I didn't recognize. I pulled it out and saw Diana's name flashing, and underneath it, three words in all caps: DON'T GO ONLINE.

I went online.

TMZ had posted them first. Page Six picked them up within the hour. The images were grainy, shot from a security camera angle, time-stamped three years ago. Me in that private dining room, dress torn at the shoulder, mascara smeared, one of the men's hands visible at the edge of the frame. The caption read: *Payne Industries' Secret Wife — The Night That Started It All?* Underneath, speculation dressed up as journalism. Anonymous sources. Whispers about my relationship with the client. The phrase *willing participant* in the second paragraph.

I stood there holding a bag of oranges and read the whole thing twice, waiting for my hands to shake. They didn't. That was the strange part. I felt very still inside, like someone had turned the volume down on the world.

By noon, my agent called. Her voice had that apologetic brightness people use when they're about to kick you. "Sofia, honey, I think we need to take a break. Just until this blows over. You understand."

I understood.

I drove back to the house and sat in the driveway for twenty minutes with the engine off, watching the hedges Isaac had planted move in the wind. Then I called him.

"I saw it," he said before I could speak.

"Then you know what you need to do."

Silence on the other end. Not the kind that meant he was thinking. The kind that meant he'd already decided.

"Isaac, you were there. You know what happened. You just have to say it. One statement. That's all."

"Hailey says a statement would make it worse."

I pressed my thumb into my wrist until the bone ached. "Hailey."

"She's the PR director, Sofia. This is what she does. She says any response from me amplifies the story. We let it die down on its own."

"It's not going to die down. It's going to bury me."

"You're being dramatic." His voice was flat, bored almost. "It's tabloid garbage. No one who matters takes this seriously."

"I matter, Isaac."

Another silence. Longer this time.

"I have a board meeting," he said finally. "We'll talk tonight."

He hung up.

We didn't talk that night. Or the night after. He stayed in the city, citing back-to-back meetings, and I stayed in the Hamptons watching my career disintegrate in real time. Former colleagues sent messages that were either viciously curious or performatively sympathetic. My Instagram filled with strangers calling me things I'd never been called before. I stopped reading after the first hundred.

On Thursday, Hailey called me directly.

I almost didn't answer. Then I thought, perversely, that I wanted to hear her voice. I wanted to know what someone sounded like after they'd done this.

"Sofia," she said, warm as a friend. "I've been thinking about you. This whole situation is just awful."

I said nothing.

"Listen, I pulled some strings. There's a project—small budget, but it's work. The director's a friend. I told him you're looking for something raw, something that shows range."

"What kind of project."

"Independent film. Gritty, character-driven. You'd play a woman struggling with addiction and survival work. It's actually a really compelling role if you approach it right."

Survival work. That was the phrase she used.

"You want me to play a prostitute," I said.

"I want you to play a *character*," Hailey corrected gently. "A woman in crisis. It's not about the job, Sofia. It's about the journey. And honestly? Right now, you need to be seen working. Sitting at home while the tabloids run wild isn't helping anyone."

I hung up.

That night, Isaac called. Not to ask how I was. To tell me I should take the role.

"Hailey went out of her way to get you this," he said. "You've been complaining for weeks that no one will hire you. Now someone is."

"It's a setup, Isaac. She's trying to humiliate me."

"You're paranoid." He sounded tired, like I was a problem he'd been dealing with too long. "She's trying to help. You should be grateful."

Grateful.

I looked down at my lap, at the hand resting on my stomach where a six-week secret was growing, and I thought about telling him. Right then. Over the phone. Just to hear what his voice would do.

But I didn't.

"Beggars can't be choosers, Sofia," Isaac said into the silence. "Take the job."

And he hung up.

I sat there in the dark for a long time, thumb pressed to my wrist, and I thought about the woman I used to be. The one who walked into auditions and made directors forget the script. The one who believed love was something you could earn if you just gave enough.

That woman was gone.

I didn't know yet what was growing in her place.
