Chapter 4

The dark was thick. It felt like cold oil pressing against my face.

There was only one plastic bottle of water on the floor near the door. I rationed it. I took one tiny sip every time my throat felt like dry sandpaper.

To track time, I counted my own heartbeats. One, two, three... after a few thousand, numbers lost all meaning. Sleep never came. My mind stayed awake in the blackness, listening to the faint hum of pipes inside the walls.

Every time I blinked, I saw nothing. My cracked ribs throbbed with a steady, dull ache.

By the seventh day, my head felt hollow. My eyes had grown used to the pitch-black void.

Then, metal scraped against metal.

The heavy deadbolt slid back. The storage room door swung wide open.

Light poured in like a physical blow. A blinding, white-hot pain stabbed straight through my eyes. I shielded my face with my right forearm, tears streaming down my cheeks from the sudden glare.

Calvin stood in the doorway.

He was silhouetted against the bright hall light. His hands were stuffed in his trouser pockets, watching me closely. He stood tall, waiting for the screaming. He waited for me to collapse, to beg, to sob on my knees.

I didn't move for a long minute. I forced my eyes to adjust to the stinging brightness. Then, using the wall for support, I pushed myself up from the cold concrete.

My joints popped. Pain flared in my ribs, but my face remained smooth. I brushed the dust off my clothes, looked right past Calvin, and stepped out into the hallway.

I didn't say a single word.

I took the private elevator straight up to the penthouse.

In the primary bathroom, I turned on the shower. I stood under the scalding water until the grime and sweat washed down the drain. I washed my hair twice.

I dried off and dressed in clean linen pants and a soft cream sweater. In the mirror, my skin looked paper-white. Dark purple bruises hung under my eyes, and the bright bathroom lights made my temples throb with an ache that wouldn't leave.

I walked out to the dining room.

Calvin was standing by the glass table. He hadn't taken off his coat. He was watching the hallway, his jaw clamped tight, waiting for the inevitable explosion.

I pulled out a chair and sat down.

I looked up at him. My voice was calm and even.

"Have you eaten?" I asked.

Calvin froze. His knuckles twitched against the edge of the table. He stared at me as if I were a ghost.

"What?" he said, his voice rough.

"It's nearly noon," I said simply. "I can ask Sylvia to make lunch."

He searched my eyes for anger, for tears, for hate. He found nothing. There was only a flat, empty calm. A muscle in his cheek ticked. He stepped back, looking deeply unsettled for the first time since I had met him.

Without answering, he turned around and walked into his study, shutting the door behind him.

Two days later, my post-crash prescription painkillers ran out.

The replacement bottle sat on my nightstand. When I picked it up, something felt wrong. The safety seal looked slightly peeled at the corner.

I opened the cap and tipped three pills into my palm.

The imprint stamped on the chalky surface was wrong. The dosage was double what my doctor had ordered. It was a heavy narcotic mix—enough to make anyone dizzy, slurred, and completely unhinged within an hour.

I stared at the small white tablets.

Sylvia had worked for Calvin’s family for fifteen years and was fiercely loyal. But Cleo had dropped by the penthouse yesterday afternoon, claiming she wanted to bring fresh fruit from Greenwich.

She wanted me to look unstable. She wanted Calvin and my parents to think the car crash had broken my mind.

I walked into the bathroom, dumped most of the pills into the toilet bowl, and flushed them away.

I kept the bottle, the peeled cap, and two loose pills.

On Sunday, we drove out to the Lawson estate in Greenwich for family brunch.

Calvin drove in total silence. Every few minutes, his eyes flicked toward me in the rearview mirror, his brow furrowed. I sat upright in the passenger seat, quietly watching the trees pass by.

When we walked into the sunlit Lawson dining room, Priscilla looked up eagerly. Her eyes swept over my face, clearly looking for a stumbling, glassy-eyed mess.

Instead, I walked in with a straight spine. My hair was combed neatly, and my gaze was sharp.

"Good morning, Mitchell. Priscilla," I said smoothly.

Cleo sat next to my father, wearing an expensive baby-pink cardigan. When she saw how steady my hands were as I pulled out my chair, her practiced smile stiffened.

Halfway through the meal, Cleo's silverware clattered loudly against her porcelain plate.

Her breath turned fast and shallow. She clutched her throat with a trembling hand, her eyes widening in theatrical terror.

"Lorelei?" Priscilla gasped, half-rising from her seat. "What is it, darling?"

"I... I can't breathe," Cleo gasped. Tears welled in her eyes on cue. She reached across the table and grabbed Calvin's sleeve with both hands. "The noise... the lights... it feels like the dark room abroad. Calvin, please..."

Her chest heaved violently.

Calvin didn't hesitate. He shoved his chair back, stood up, and wrapped a strong arm around her trembling shoulders.

"I've got you," he muttered, his voice tight with protective urgency. "Come outside. Let's get some fresh air."

He guided her through the French doors onto the stone terrace. Mitchell and Priscilla hovered by the glass, wringing their hands and murmuring worried words.

I didn't move. I took a slow sip of my black coffee.

Through the clear glass window, I watched Calvin pull Cleo against his side. She buried her tear-stained face directly into his chest, her shoulders shaking with fake sobs. He stroked her back with gentle, steady strokes.

I reached down into my handbag under the table.

I pulled out my phone. With two quiet taps, I focused the lens on the tampered pill bottle resting on my lap. The lighting caught the mismatched serial code and the peeled seal perfectly.

I uploaded the high-resolution photo straight into my secure cloud storage.

Every cruelty had a price. Every staged tear was another charge on the tab.

Soon, I would collect every cent.
