Chapter 3

Gracie arrived on a Tuesday.

I heard the knock at 9:00 a.m. Three sharp raps, like she was serving a warrant.

I opened the door. She stood there with a rolling suitcase and a purse the size of a small dog. Behind her, a taxi was pulling away from the curb.

"Gracie," I said.

She walked past me into the apartment. Didn't ask. Just walked.

She set the suitcase by the coat closet, dropped her purse on the counter, and looked around like she was inspecting a crime scene.

"Where is he?"

"Bedroom. Sleeping."

She nodded. Walked down the hall. I heard the door open. Heard her voice, low and soft, the tone she used when she wanted something.

I stayed in the kitchen.

She came back ten minutes later. Poured herself a glass of water from the tap. Drank it standing up.

"We need to talk," she said.

I folded my arms. Waited.

"You're not going through with the divorce."

I didn't answer.

"Dallas needs care. Full-time. You're his wife. That's your job."

"He asked me for a divorce," I said quietly. "He brought another woman into this apartment and told me to leave."

Gracie set the glass down. Hard. "That woman is gone. The situation has changed."

"The situation."

"He's paralyzed, Ivy. He can't work. He can't take care of himself. You think you can just walk away from that?"

I looked at her. At the tight line of her mouth. The way her eyes narrowed when she was about to say something she thought would land.

"Where will you go?" she asked. "Back to those people in Portland who couldn't even hold onto you?"

My chest tightened.

"You leave him now, everyone will know. I'll make sure of it. Every person in this building. Every friend you think you have. They'll know you abandoned a paralyzed man because it got hard."

She stepped closer.

"And the lease? Dallas's name. The bank accounts? Dallas's name. You have nothing, Ivy. You are nothing without this marriage."

I stood very still.

She picked up her purse. "I'm staying in the guest room. We'll work out a schedule."

She walked down the hall.

I heard the guest room door close.

I stood in the kitchen for a long time.

Then I walked into the bathroom and locked the door.

I opened the cabinet under the sink. Pushed aside the cleaning supplies. The extra toilet paper. The boxes of things I never used.

At the back, behind everything, was a small metal box.

I pulled it out. Set it on the counter.

The lock was a simple combination. Three numbers I'd never changed. I turned the dial.

It clicked open.

Inside was a single piece of paper. Thermal print, the edges curled with age. An ultrasound image. Gray and white and blurry, the way they all are.

A tiny shape in the center. A curve that might have been a head. A shadow that might have been a heartbeat.

Nine weeks and two days.

I held it under the bathroom light.

I studied it the way you study a map. The way you study a blueprint.

I thought about Gracie's face when she said *abandoned*.

I thought about Dallas in the hospital bed, asking where Karsyn was.

I thought about the envelope on the counter. *Irreconcilable differences.*

I thought about the mug Karsyn drank from. The way her hand rested on her belly. Protective. Proud.

I thought about the night Dallas came home drunk and I said something — I don't even remember what — and he kicked me. Once. Hard. Low.

I thought about the blood two days later.

I thought about the emergency room. The doctor with the kind eyes who said *I'm sorry* and handed me this piece of paper like it was supposed to mean something.

I thought about how I never told Dallas.

How I never told anyone.

I put the ultrasound back in the box. Locked it. Put it back under the sink.

I walked into the kitchen. Made tea. Watched the steam rise.

The plan assembled itself in my mind. Piece by piece. Cold and clear.

I left the mug on the counter.

I went to bed.

I didn't sleep.

The next morning, I found Gracie in the kitchen making coffee.

I stood in the doorway. Held the ultrasound in both hands.

My voice shook when I spoke. I let it.

"Gracie."

She turned.

I held out the paper.

"I'm pregnant."

Her eyes dropped to the ultrasound. Then back to my face.

"What?"

"Eight weeks." My voice cracked. Perfect. "I didn't want to say anything. With everything happening. The stress. I didn't know if—"

She crossed the kitchen in three steps. Took the ultrasound from my hands.

She stared at it.

Her jaw unclenched. Her shoulders dropped.

She looked at me, and for the first time since I'd known her, something soft moved across her face.

"A baby," she whispered.

I nodded. Let my eyes fill.

"A Grant baby."

"Yes."

She touched the image with one finger. Gentle. Reverent.

"You can't leave," she said. "You can't put yourself through that kind of stress. Not now."

"I know."

"You need rest. You need to be taken care of."

I looked down. Let my shoulders shake.

She put her hand on my arm. Squeezed.

"I'll handle everything," she said. "You just take care of yourself. And the baby."

I nodded.

She handed the ultrasound back to me.

I held it against my chest.

She smiled.

I smiled back.

And inside me, something cold and sharp and patient settled into place.

I had her.
