Chapter 4

The report was eleven pages long.

I sat in my car three blocks from the penthouse and read every word. The engine was off. Outside, New York moved the way it always did — indifferent, relentless, full of people going somewhere that mattered to them. I read with the folder open on my steering wheel and the heat slowly dying around me.

Declan had been thorough. He always was. We'd been friends since sophomore year of college, long before he became the kind of attorney whose name opened doors, and when I'd called him two weeks ago from a coffee shop bathroom with my voice barely holding together, he hadn't asked me why. He'd just said: give me a name.

I gave him Paislee Ryan.

The photographs were paper-clipped to the back. Hotel lobby. Midtown. A man I didn't recognize — dark jacket, easy smile, the kind of man who looked comfortable being waited on. Marcus Hale. Her ex-boyfriend. The timestamps ran across two months, every week without exception, sometimes twice. The hotel charges on Lian's black card were listed under corporate catering descriptions. Neat. Practiced. The kind of lie that takes rehearsal.

I turned to the last page and sat with it for a long time.

I thought I would cry. I didn't. What came instead was something colder and much quieter — a feeling like a room being cleared of furniture. Like space being made. I had spent months trying to hold something together that she had been systematically taking apart, and somewhere in the reading of those eleven pages, I stopped trying to hold it.

I folded the report. I put it in my bag.

I drove back to the penthouse.

---

The dinner was for twelve.

Lian's brother. Two cousins. His college roommate and his wife. A business partner whose name I always forgot. Reese at the far end, straight-backed, navy, watching everything.

I wore the black dress I'd worn to his company's anniversary gala two years ago. He'd told me then that I looked like someone worth keeping. I put it on tonight because I wanted to remember that I had once been seen that way. Even if only by a version of him that no longer existed.

Paislee sat beside him. She wore cream. Her bandaged arm was hidden under a long sleeve, but she held it carefully, and twice during the first course I saw Lian glance at it with that particular expression — guilt dressed as protectiveness.

I ate. I answered when spoken to. I kept my hands still in my lap.

The announcement came between the main course and dessert.

Lian stood. He didn't tap his glass. He didn't clear his throat. He just stood, and the table went quiet the way tables go quiet for men like him — immediately, without question.

"I want to share something with the people closest to me," he said.

He looked at Paislee. She looked up at him with her eyes soft and her lips parted, performing something she'd clearly practiced. His hand moved to her shoulder.

"Paislee is pregnant."

The table responded the way it was supposed to. Warmth moving around the room like a wave. His brother stood to shake his hand. His cousin kissed Paislee's cheek. The business partner whose name I forgot raised his glass.

Lian kissed her forehead.

He did not look at me.

I sat at my end of the table and watched it happen. Watched the room arrange itself around them like a photograph being composed. Watched the life I had kept vigil for — three months, plastic chair, machines breathing for him, the sweater, the wedding album, all of it — get handed across the table to a woman who had been meeting her ex-boyfriend in a Midtown hotel on his credit card.

I kept my face still. I was good at that now.

Reese looked at me once, from her end of the table. Her expression didn't change. But she held my gaze for two full seconds before looking away, and in that look was everything she would never say out loud.

The dinner ended. Guests filtered into the foyer. Coats were retrieved. Voices softened into goodbye.

I was still seated when Lian stopped beside my chair.

He didn't sit. He didn't look at me. He stood just at the edge of my peripheral vision, his hand resting on the back of the empty chair beside mine.

"I'll have the divorce papers drafted by the end of the week," he said.

Quiet. Casual. The way you'd mention a grocery list.

I didn't answer.

He walked away.

I sat alone at the long table with the candles burning low and the crystal catching the light and the centerpiece that had taken someone three hours to arrange. I sat there until the last car left and the staff began to clear the plates around me, working carefully, not making eye contact.

Then I picked up my bag.

Declan's report was still inside it. Eleven pages. Two months of hotel visits. A fake pregnancy and a black card and a man named Marcus Hale with an easy smile.

By the end of the week, I thought. He'd have the papers drafted.

So would I.
