Chapter 2

"Look at the terminal, Elin," Magnus said.

A new log filled the screen. My administrator account had bypassed the firewall, overridden the toxicity hold, and approved the upload. Every action carried my IP address, token, and digital signature.

"You cloned my credentials."

"I protected the trial."

Jonas sat rigid at the keyboard. His hands trembled above the keys.

"Tell me you did not write that mirror protocol," I said. "Tell me you did not frame your own mother for research fraud."

He swallowed. "Dad said the investors would destroy us if the paper failed. He said you could not see the bigger picture."

"The bigger picture is six patients with failing livers."

The steel door buzzed open before Magnus could answer. Karin Voller entered with two institute security officers behind her. Her gray blazer was immaculate. Her face gave away nothing.

"Step away from the console, Elin."

"Lock down the server," I said. "Magnus falsified eighteen data sets. Jonas used a backdoor to force the submission through under my name."

Karin walked straight to me, seized the blue lanyard around my neck, and cut it with a pair of steel shears. My badge struck the floor.

"Your access is revoked."

I kicked the badge aside. "You checked the screen and decided I was the criminal?"

"The mainframe shows a clean upload approved by the lead researcher."

"I approved nothing."

Magnus moved to Karin's side. "The ethics board will see her secure login, her workstation address, and her signature. Digital records do not care about accusations."

The speed of Karin's response told me everything. She had not come to investigate. She had come prepared to remove me.

"How much did the venture fund promise you?" I asked. "AURORA-1 is worth billions if the safety window stays clean."

"I am protecting the institute from a scientist who has lost perspective," Karin said. "One disputed readout does not justify destroying eighteen years of work."

"This is not one readout. Fourteen months ago, six phase-two patients developed immune storms. Their temperatures climbed above forty degrees. Their liver enzymes tripled. I brought you the reports myself."

"I have no record of that meeting."

"I sealed the data with red ethics holds. You signed the custody log and promised to notify the Swedish Medical Products Agency."

Karin met my gaze. "There are no sealed files. There is only a lead researcher who altered data, disconnected a workstation, and removed institute property."

"You signed for them."

"Memory becomes unreliable under stress."

She laid a suspension notice on my desk. It landed on the unused roll of red ethics stickers, covering the evidence of the very process she denied.

"You have ten minutes to surrender the blue audit disk," she said. "Do that, and security will escort you out without restraint."

My hand closed around the plastic case in my coat pocket. "And if I refuse?"

The officers stepped closer.

"Then they take it."

I looked at Jonas. "Open the local cache and show her the original timestamp."

His eyes moved to Magnus before returning to the keyboard. "My account is locked."

"You wrote the bypass. You can still reach the cache."

Karin stepped between us. "The witness will not alter the system again."

"Witness? He is the person who forged my signature."

Jonas flinched. "I only copied the token. Dad said the failed readout came from a contaminated plate."

"Then why did you change the timestamp?"

He had no answer.

I bent to retrieve my badge. Karin planted the toe of her shoe over it. The plastic cracked under her heel.

"Your office, email, and building credentials are suspended," she said. "You are not to contact the trial participants or any external regulator."

"You cannot bar the ethics director from reporting a safety emergency."

"You are no longer the ethics director."

She turned the suspension notice so I could see the signatures at the bottom. Magnus had signed first. Karin had signed second. The third line carried Jonas's digital witness mark. My son had helped remove me before I entered the lab that night.

The discovery hurt more than the cracked badge.

"How long have you been planning this?" I asked him.

Jonas stared at the floor. "We were trying to keep the project alive."

"You were trying to keep your names on the paper."

"That disk contains the raw spectrometer logs from 8:42 p.m. It proves the toxicity failure and the forged upload. Touch it, and I report every one of you."

Magnus turned toward the filing cabinets. He selected a green-gridded notebook from a stack of physical records.

My stomach dropped.

"Put it down."

He ran his thumb over the frayed cover. "The handwritten backup. Dates, signatures, calibration notes."

"Dad, wait," Jonas said.

The notebook held more than trial records. Seven years earlier, I had used it to teach Jonas how to track anomalies. His first successful calibration notes crowded the margins beside my formulas. The later pages documented the six immune alarms and the dates I sealed them.

"That book proves the hold existed," I told Karin. "It contains my signature and Jonas's notes from the day we found the protein spikes."

Karin looked past it. "I do not see a notebook."

Magnus carried it to the industrial shredder beside the cabinets and switched on the motor.

I lunged. One officer blocked me and drove a forearm into my chest. My hip struck the desk, sending pain through my lower back.

"You are destroying evidence," I shouted. "And you are destroying your own son's work."

Magnus opened the cover. "The physical record contradicts the digital submission. We cannot protect the project while both versions exist."

"Those were his first formulas."

"It is paper, Elin."

He tore a section from the binding. The sound was worse than the shredder. Jonas flinched as if Magnus had ripped something from him.

"No!"

The officer tightened his grip on my shoulder while Magnus lowered the pages toward the feed slot. The rollers caught the bottom edge and pulled. Red dates, patient codes, and Jonas's adolescent handwriting vanished between the metal teeth.

Jonas shoved away from the keyboard. His chair slammed into the wall. He sprinted across the lab and grabbed for the pages still above the blades.

Magnus caught his wrist and forced it against the shredder housing.

"Let it disappear," he said.
