Chapter 2

"I want my property back," I demanded, my voice echoing in the empty foyer.

Hugo didn't answer. He just grabbed his wool coat from the rack.

I marched back to my office. If he had my sketches, what else had he touched?

I opened my laptop and logged into the joint banking portal.

Zero.

I refreshed the page. The company's entire operating budget was gone.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I clicked over to my private savings—the hidden R&D backup fund I had scrimped and saved for two years to build.

Empty.

A new email sat in my inbox. A notification from the county clerk's office. *Title Transfer Initiated: Platinum Estate Villa.*

I opened the attached PDF. My signature looped across the bottom line, authorizing the transfer of our home to Cindy Miller.

I printed the pages, my hands trembling with rage, and hurried back to the hallway.

Hugo was still by the door, checking his reflection in the mirror.

"Hugo, please," I started, forcing my tone to stay even. "We need to talk about this calmly."

He glanced over his shoulder. "I'm busy."

"You drained the company's liquid funds. All of it."

"The business needed restructuring."

"You took my private R&D money," I said, holding up the papers. "And you forged my signature to give Cindy the deed to this house."

"Cindy needs a stable place to live," he replied, turning to face me. "She brings value to my life. You just drain it."

"I bought this villa! I paid the mortgage for ten years while you were figuring out your career! You never contributed a single dime to the down payment."

"And I built the brand that put food on your table," he countered.

"You built it with my formulas! My sweat! My money!"

"Stop yelling. You sound crazy."

"How did you even find my private ledger? I kept it locked away."

"I have my ways." He grabbed his car keys from the console table.

"You are committing fraud, Hugo. We are married. You have no right to sign my name and give our house to your mistress."

"I am the CEO. I make the financial decisions."

"Not for my personal accounts."

"Not for much longer if you keep acting like a lunatic." He opened the front door. "I am going to Cindy's. She actually knows how to treat a man. She never interrogates me the second I walk through the door."

"Don't walk out that door!"

"Watch me."

He slammed it in my face. The heavy oak rattled in its frame.

I stood there, clutching the forged papers.

A slow clap broke the silence.

I spun around. Jasper stood at the top of the stairs. My sixteen-year-old son wore a smirk that perfectly mirrored his father's arrogance.

"Bravo, Mom. Another stellar performance."

"Jasper," I whispered. "Go back to your room."

He descended the steps, his sneakers silent on the hardwood. "You always scream at him."

"He stole our money. He is trying to give our house to his mistress."

"It is not stealing if it is his company."

"It is my money!" I waved the bank statement. "My private R&D fund. No one knew about that account except..."

I stopped. My gaze locked onto his cold blue eyes.

"Except who?" Jasper challenged.

"I left the ledger on the kitchen island yesterday. Just for a minute while I answered the door."

"Yeah. You did."

"You took pictures of it."

"Cindy asked me to look into your finances," Jasper admitted, crossing his arms. "She said you were hiding cash from Dad."

The floor seemed to tilt beneath my feet. "You helped her? You gave Cindy my private banking details?"

"She needed proof you were holding out on us."

"I am your mother! I carried you for nine months. I stayed up with you every time you had a fever."

"Oh, here comes the guilt trip," he mocked.

"It is not a guilt trip, Jasper. It is the truth. That money was for my foundation line. It was our safety net. If the company goes under, that cash was meant to save us."

"You are just bitter," Jasper sneered. "Why do you always have to ruin everything? Why do you refuse to allow Dad and Cindy to be happy? You grip every dollar so tight, no wonder he wants to leave."

"How dare you say that? I sacrificed everything for this family. I empty my own pockets so you get to attend private school."

"You sacrificed for yourself. You just want control. Cindy actually listens to me. She bought me the new gaming rig you refused to pay for."

"She bought it with my money! The money she just stole from me!"

"Whatever." Jasper rolled his eyes and turned his back on me. "You are crazy. I am going to my room."

"Jasper, come back here!" I demanded.

He ignored me. He walked up the stairs, leaving me alone in the freezing hallway.

The next morning, the nightmare spilled out of my house and into the streets.

I walked into the local coffee shop. The barista, a girl I had tipped generously for years, avoided my gaze. She shoved my coffee across the counter without a word.

Two women from my book club sat in the corner booth.

"Did you hear?" Sarah murmured, loud enough for her voice to carry. "She cut off Hugo's credit cards."

"I heard she hides millions in offshore accounts," Linda replied, stirring her latte. "Poor Hugo. Cindy told my sister he barely holds the business together because Renee is so stingy."

I gripped my purse and marched over to their table. "Excuse me?"

Sarah jumped, her cheeks flushing. "Renee. We did not see you."

"If you have something to say, say it to my face."

"Well," Linda bristled, sitting up straighter. "Everyone knows you starve your own husband out of his company. Jasper even told the Miller boy you scream at them over pennies."

"That is a lie."

"Is it?" Sarah asked. "Cindy said you plan to evict them from the Platinum Estate. You just act bitter because he moved on."

"He forged my signature!" I shouted.

The entire coffee shop went dead silent. Every head turned in my direction.

Linda scoffed, shaking her head. "There she goes. Just like Jasper said. Completely unhinged."

My lungs refused to work. They had spun the story perfectly. Hugo and Cindy were the victims. I was the cruel, greedy wife.

I turned and ran out of the shop.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. A text from Aunt Clara.

*Renee, I am so disappointed in you. Your own son says you refuse to buy him school supplies. Stop being so vindictive.*

I deleted the message. Then another came from a neighbor.

*Shame on you.*

Everywhere I went, the whispers followed. At the grocery store, fingers pointed at me in the produce aisle. At the gas station, the attendant gave me a look of pure disgust.

They had poisoned the entire town against me.

Night fell, bringing no relief.

I lay in my massive, empty bed, staring at the ceiling. The clock on the nightstand flashed 2:00 AM. Then 3:00 AM.

Sleep refused to come. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Jasper's cold sneer. I heard Hugo's dismissive tone.

My chest ached with a heavy, suffocating pressure.

They had destroyed my career. They had stolen my savings. They had ruined my reputation.

But as I clutched the pillow to my chest, a pathetic, desperate thought crept into my mind.

*They will come back.*

Hugo would realize Cindy was just using him. Jasper would see that I loved him more than a stupid gaming console. We could fix this. We could be a family again.

I refused to give up on them. I simply refused.

My phone screen lit up in the darkness.

A text message from an unknown number.

I swiped the screen to unlock it.

*You think you know how bad it is, Renee. You have no idea. Look at this.*

Below the text was an audio file.

I pressed play.
