MY HUSBAND AND SON CHOSE HER OVER ME Novel Cover

MY HUSBAND AND SON CHOSE HER OVER ME

For thirteen years, I believed Ryan had saved me from a loveless family. Our anniversary trip to Hawaii was supposed to celebrate us—until I found out at the gate that he'd secretly given my seat to his assistant. Worse, my twelve-year-old son begged me not to spoil their fun. They flew off together, leaving me behind with their water bottles. But I refused to wait. I remembered who financed his rise and built our home. By the time they landed, I was already tearing it all down—and no plea could make me stay.

Chapter 2

The glass wall of Terminal 3 mirrored a Boeing 737 lifting off the runway, its silver belly slicing through the gray clouds.

I stared at the reflection, feeling the condensation from the three plastic water bottles pooling against my chest. The chill seeped through my shirt, grounding me.

"Miss? Are you waiting for a taxi?" a curbside attendant asked, stepping into my line of sight. He pointed toward the yellow cabs lined up along the curb.

"No," I said.

I marched toward the row of waste bins, lifting the three bottles.

One. Two. Three.

I gripped the handle of my suitcase and headed for the ground transportation center at the far end of the concourse.

The airport coach crawled through afternoon traffic toward Oak Park. I braced my knees against the seat in front of me as it hit a pothole.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the toll-free number on the back of my platinum card.

"Welcome to First National Premier Card Services. My name is Greg. How can I help you today?"

"Hi, Greg. I need to revoke an authorized user on my account."

"I can help with that. Can I have the name of the user?"

"Ryan." I gave him the last name and the security pin.

"Okay, pulling up your file. I see two recent charges pending from Le Bernardin. Should I flag those as fraudulent?"

I gripped the edge of the plastic tray table. Three months ago, I had stared at a similar statement.

"Two thousand dollars at a French restaurant, Ryan?" I had asked him in our kitchen.

"It was a client dinner," he had answered, not looking up from his laptop. "Lauren needed to be there to take notes. Don't act crazy."

I blinked, pulling myself back to the bumpy bus ride.

"Leave the pending charges," I told Greg. "But cancel Ryan's authorized card and lock both debit cards tied to the joint checking account. Place a temporary hold on outgoing electronic transfers."

"You understand that either joint owner can still appear at a branch with identification?"

"I do. I want the cards and online transfers stopped today."

"The hold is in place," Greg said. "Anything else?"

"Yes. Cancel the business expense cards I personally guaranteed."

"Those cards are issued under your guarantee, with Mr. Mills as an authorized user," Greg confirmed. "I can close them at your request. That will include his travel card."

"That is the goal."

"What about the travel rewards? The points linked to the Premier card?"

"Those are tied to the primary account. My account."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Good. Cash them out. Transfer the balance to my private savings."

"All of them? You have over three hundred thousand points."

"Every single point. Today."

"Processing that now. Okay, all requested cards are locked and points transferred. Is there anything else I can do for you?"

"No. Thank you."

I hung up. Ryan wanted to play the provider? Let him pay for his own anniversary trip with his assistant. I logged into my banking app and watched his access vanish from the screen.

I opened my messages and scrolled down to a name I hadn't texted in two years.

Chloe.

Hey. Are you still living at the old place in Oak Park? I need a favor.

The reply came three minutes later.

Always. Door is unlocked. Come over.

I'm on a bus. Be there in two hours.

Bring wine.

I don't have wine. I have a suitcase.

Even better.

Two hours later, I dragged my suitcase up the cracked concrete steps of Chloe's Victorian house.

"Chloe?" I called out, dragging my luggage over the threshold.

A man stepped out of the hallway, nearly colliding with me.

He wore scuffed leather work boots and faded denim. He caught the doorframe to steady himself, his eyes dropping to my suitcase, then up to my face.

"You're not Chloe," I said, taking a step back.

"And you're not the pizza delivery," he replied. His voice carried a rough, gravelly undertone.

I recognized the sharp line of his jaw and the dark hair. Chloe's older brother.

"Caleb," I said. "I didn't know you were in town."

"I'm fixing the drywall in the kitchen," he said. He let the measuring tape snap back into its plastic casing with a sharp click. "Chloe went to the hardware store."

"She told me the door was unlocked."

"She tells everyone that. It's a terrible security habit." Caleb leaned against the archway. He didn't smile. He just watched me.

"I can wait on the porch," I offered, turning back toward the door.

"Don't be ridiculous," he said. "Come inside."

"Rough day?" he asked.

"You could say that."

"You want a beer? Or a crowbar to smash something?"

"A beer is fine."

Caleb walked into the kitchen. The kitchen was half-gutted, exposing wooden studs and old pipes. Plaster dust coated the countertops. He pulled two bottles from a small cooler on the floor, popped the caps off with the edge of the counter, and handed one to me.

"Thanks." I took a long sip. The cold liquid burned the back of my throat.

"Where's the husband?" Caleb asked.

"On his way to a surf resort," I said. "With his assistant."

Caleb raised an eyebrow. "And he left you at the airport?"

"He gave her my ticket."

Caleb stopped mid-sip. He lowered the bottle. "He gave your ticket to another woman."

"Yes."

"Did you hit him?"

"No."

"Did you yell?"

"No."

"Then what did you do, Emma?"

"I walked away."

Caleb scoffed. "Doesn't sound like you. You used to key guys' cars in high school if they looked at Chloe wrong."

"I grew up. I got married. I learned to handle things quietly."

"Quietly is boring."

"Quietly is effective," I said, setting my bottle down on the dusty counter. "I cut off his credit cards on the bus ride over here."

Caleb tilted his head. "Which ones?"

"All of them. The platinum card. Electronic access to the joint checking account. The business expense cards I guaranteed while he built his career. He's going to have a hard time checking into that five-star hotel when his card declines at the front desk."

A low chuckle escaped Caleb's chest. "Vicious. I like it."

"It's just math. I paid for those tickets. I paid the mortgage for five years. He thinks he holds the power because his name is on the company letterhead."

"So you're burning it down."

"I'm securing my assets."

"Same thing." Caleb pushed off the counter. He walked over to where I stood, closing the distance between us. He smelled like sawdust and clean sweat.

"You always were too smart for him, Emma."

"He didn't think so."

"He's an idiot."

Caleb reached out. For a second, I thought he was going to touch my arm.

He looked past me, his gaze fixing on the foyer.

I followed his line of sight. He was staring at my luggage.

The silence stretched between us, heavy and thick.

He looked back at me, his expression unreadable.

"How long are you staying here?"
