My Husband Accused Me While His Mistress Watched
Chapter 2
I woke to sunlight streaming through the penthouse windows and the soft sound of one twin stirring in her bassinet. My body still ached, the kind of deep bone-tiredness that comes after childbirth, but I'd slept better than I had in weeks. The suite was quiet except for the low hum of the air purifier and the distant murmur of morning traffic below.
I was nursing Ella in the chair by the window when my phone buzzed. A text from Enzo: *Legal team has the audit. Call when you're ready.* I smiled faintly and set the phone face-down on the side table. Not yet. I wanted one more quiet morning before the storm hit.
That quiet lasted exactly twenty-three minutes.
The door to my suite flew open without warning. No knock. No announcement. Just the sudden slam of expensive wood against the wall, and then Haley Jimenez stood in my doorway, chest heaving, her face flushed with the kind of rage that looked rehearsed.
She wore a cream-colored dress I recognized immediately—not because it was distinctive, but because it was a near-exact copy of one I'd worn to a charity gala three years ago. The cut was slightly off. The fabric cheaper. But the silhouette was unmistakable. Her heels were tall and narrow, designer knockoffs that clicked too loudly against the hardwood as she stepped inside.
"Wren."
I looked up slowly, adjusting Ella's position against my chest. I didn't stand. I didn't speak. I just watched her with the same mild curiosity I might give a stray dog barking at a passing car.
Haley's hands clenched into fists at her sides. "Are you serious right now? Are you *actually* serious?"
I let the silence stretch. Ella made a small sound, and I shifted her gently, my gaze never leaving Haley's face.
"You post that picture," Haley continued, her voice climbing, "of this—this *palace*—and you think I wouldn't see it? You think I wouldn't know what you're doing?"
I blinked once. Twice. Still said nothing.
"You're manipulating him," she said, stepping further into the room. "You're using Adrian's guilt to get him to pay for all this. You refuse to let go. You refuse to move on. And now you're flaunting it in my face like—like I'm supposed to feel bad for you?"
I tilted my head slightly. The motion was so small it barely registered, but it was enough to make Haley falter for half a second before she surged forward again.
"He told me he booked you a room," she said, her voice shaking now. "He said he was being *generous*. And then I see—" She gestured wildly at the suite, at the floor-to-ceiling windows, at the hand-carved bassinets. "—*this*. Behind my back. While I'm pregnant with his child, he's—"
She stopped abruptly, as if she'd just heard herself say it out loud and realized how it sounded.
I adjusted Ella again, smoothing the cashmere blanket over her tiny shoulders. When I finally spoke, my voice was soft. Conversational. "Is that all?"
Haley's face went red. "Is that—are you *kidding* me right now?"
I looked past her toward the door, where Sophie Chen had appeared, her expression professionally neutral but her eyes sharp with barely concealed disdain. Sophie had clearly let Haley through—probably because watching this unfold was too good to interrupt.
"Mrs. Lawson," Sophie said carefully, "is everything all right?"
"It's fine, Sophie," I said, my tone easy. "My guest was just leaving."
Haley turned to Sophie with a bright, brittle smile. "Actually, I'm not leaving. I'm family."
Sophie's eyebrow rose a fraction of an inch. "Family."
"Yes," Haley said firmly. She turned back to me, her smile widening. "Wren and I go way back. Best friends for years. I'm sure she's told you all about me."
I said nothing. I just watched her perform.
Haley moved deeper into the suite, her heels clicking with deliberate confidence now. She trailed her fingers along the back of the sofa, examined the edge of the marble countertop, and then walked over to the bassinet where Liam was sleeping. She leaned down, peering at him with exaggerated interest.
"Oh, he's adorable," she cooed, reaching out as if to touch his cheek.
"Don't," I said quietly.
Haley straightened, her smile faltering for just a moment before she recovered. "I was just—"
"I know what you were doing."
She turned away, walking toward the kitchenette where the private chef was preparing my lunch. "This is incredible," she said to him, her voice loud and bright. "What's on the menu today?"
The chef glanced at me. I gave a small nod, and he turned back to Haley with professional politeness. "Pan-seared salmon, roasted vegetables, and a ginger-turmeric broth."
"Perfect," Haley said. "I'll have that. And the truffle risotto from yesterday's menu. Oh, and do you have any of that organic sparkling water? The French kind?"
The chef's expression didn't change. "Of course."
Haley walked over to the spa bathroom, pushing the door open and letting out a low whistle. "Wow. This tub is *insane*."
She turned back to me, her smile sharp now. "You don't mind if I use it, do you? I mean, we're practically family."
I looked at her for a long moment. Then I smiled. It was a small, controlled curve of my lips that didn't reach my eyes.
"Not at all," I said softly. "Use whatever you like."
Haley's grin widened, triumphant. She disappeared into the bathroom, and a moment later I heard the sound of water running.
Sophie stepped closer, her voice low. "Mrs. Lawson, should I—"
"No," I said, my gaze still on the closed bathroom door. "Let her enjoy herself. And Sophie?"
"Yes?"
"Keep a detailed record of everything she touches. Everything she orders. Everything she uses."
Sophie's smile was small and knowing. "Of course, Mrs. Lawson."
I turned back to the window, Ella still cradled against my chest, and waited.
