Chapter 4

I packed one suitcase.

Not the big one we'd taken to Positano, not the matching set my father had given me as a wedding gift. A single carry-on, the old one from before Deacon, before any of this. I moved through the dark penthouse and I chose things the way you choose things when you're never coming back—practical, small, only what was mine before any of this started.

Passport. Cash. Two changes of clothes. The sketchbook from the nightstand drawer. My mother's watch, the one thing in this apartment that had never belonged to the Shaws or the Longs or anyone's alliance.

I zipped the bag. I looked at the room once.

The fireplace was cold. The ring was still on the mantle where I'd left it before I lit the fire. I'd set it there and then forgotten it, or maybe I'd left it on purpose—something for him to find, the only explanation I owed anyone.

I didn't pick it up.

I walked out. I didn't lock the door behind me. I didn't leave a note.

The elevator hummed down to the lobby. The doorman was half-asleep and nodded without really seeing me. Outside, the city was that particular shade of not-quite-dark that belongs to four in the morning—the streets wet from rain that had stopped hours ago, the traffic lights cycling through their colors for no one.

I put my suitcase in a cab.

I watched the skyline shrink behind me and I felt nothing. Not relief. Not grief. Just the clean, stripped feeling of a decision that was already made, already done, already past the point where feeling anything about it would change a single thing.

By the time New York woke up, I was already gone.

---

Deacon found the ring three days later. That was what Callum told me, much later, when I no longer cared about the timeline.

But I wasn't there for that.

I was somewhere over the Atlantic, watching the sun come up through a small oval window, when Presley was standing in front of her mirror.

She had spent two hours on it. That was the detail that stayed with me later—two hours, practicing my walk. My perfume on her wrists. My dress on her body. She had been watching me long enough to know how I moved, how I held my shoulders, the particular way I tilted my head when I was about to speak.

She had the spare key. She'd always known where it was. That was a Presley thing—knowing the location of things that weren't hers, just in case.

She let herself in after midnight.

The penthouse still smelled like ash. The fireplace. Whatever was left of three years burning down to nothing.

Deacon was in the bedroom, half-awake, the way he always was when he heard the door—that old, automatic alertness. And for one second, in the dark, with the familiar perfume reaching him first, something in his chest must have moved. Some stupid, desperate thing.

Then she spoke.

One word. His name. Her voice.

Not mine.

He was out of bed before she finished the syllable. The lamp went on. And there was Presley—my dress, my perfume, my practiced walk—standing in my bedroom doorway, looking at him with that patient, certain expression she'd worn her whole life. The one that said whatever you have, I'm owed.

"What the hell are you doing."

It wasn't a question. His voice came out flat and cold in a way that made her step back.

"Deacon, just listen—"

"Get out."

"The family needs—"

"Get out of this apartment." He crossed the room in three steps and she finally moved, finally retreated, because there was something in his face that even Presley's particular brand of certainty couldn't stand in front of. "Don't come back. Don't call. Don't send anyone. Don't."

The elevator doors closed on her.

He stood in the foyer for a long time after.

The penthouse was quiet. The kind of quiet that has a shape to it—the shape of someone who used to be there and isn't anymore. He walked back through the apartment and he saw it all at once, the way you see a room differently when you're finally looking: the empty space on the mantle. The cold fireplace. The faint smell of ash that the ventilation hadn't cleared.

He found the ring on the mantle where I'd left it.

He stood there holding it.

And somewhere over the gray Atlantic, I was watching the first pale line of sunrise come up over the water, and I was breathing—in for four, hold for four, out for four—and for the first time in a very long time, the counting felt less like survival and more like something else.

Like the first day of something I didn't have a name for yet.
