Chapter 2

Two days after moving into Emersyn's apartment, I woke up before dawn. The burns pulled across my shoulders as I sat up, a slow tightness that would become familiar over the coming months. The bedroom window showed Brooklyn in early light—a gray-blue haze that reminded me, for a moment, of the smoke in the basement. I pushed that thought away and reached for my phone.

The screen showed no new messages. I hadn't expected any.

I knocked on Emersyn's door at six-thirty. She opened it, already dressed, a travel mug of coffee in her hand. She didn't ask why I was up so early or why my voice sounded different when I asked if she could drive me somewhere.

"Keys are on the counter," she said.

We drove to Brooklyn Heights in the quiet before the morning rush. The bank was just opening—a small branch with marble floors and brass fixtures that had been there since before the neighborhood became fashionable. I'd opened the safe deposit box three years ago, after the miscarriage, when Alexander and I had fought for the first and only time with real honesty. I remembered his face that night, flushed with anger and something else—fear, maybe, that I might actually leave.

"You'll regret this," he'd said, signing the document I'd drafted. "You'll never use it."

He'd been wrong about so many things, but that was the first time I'd seen it clearly.

The envelope felt heavier than it should have. I held it in my lap as Emersyn drove us back to her apartment, the morning light stronger now, cutting through the windshield in sharp angles. I didn't open it. I knew what was inside.

That evening, after the burn specialist's appointment, I sat at Emersyn's kitchen table with her laptop open to a law firm's website. Catherine Hale's profile showed a woman about fifty, with a direct gaze and no wedding ring. Her bio mentioned cases argued before the New York State Supreme Court and a focus on high-asset divorces. I'd spent four days researching her, reading every decision, every interview. I knew she was the right person before I ever spoke to her.

I called the number on the screen.

"Hale and Associates," a crisp voice answered.

"I'd like to schedule a consultation with Ms. Hale," I said. "It's regarding a postnuptial agreement enforcement."

"Your name?"

I paused. "Lydia Cooper. Not Marshall. Cooper."

There was a brief silence. "Ms. Hale has an opening tomorrow at ten. Will that work for you?"

"Yes. Thank you."

The next morning, Catherine Hale's office occupied the thirty-second floor of a Midtown tower. The reception area was quiet, with abstract paintings and leather chairs that didn't match exactly. I sat with my folder on my lap, watching the second hand on the wall clock tick through the minutes.

At precisely ten, a door opened. Catherine Hale was taller than she'd appeared in her photographs, with silver-streaked hair and the kind of presence that made rooms feel smaller.

"Mrs. Cooper," she said, extending her hand. "Come in."

Her office had a view of the Chrysler Building. I placed my folder on her desk and opened it methodically. The postnuptial agreement lay on top, followed by the fire department's incident report, Monroe's hospital visit records, printouts of Alexander's calendar showing his whereabouts during her "emergencies," screenshots of joint account statements showing charges at high-end boutiques and restaurants that I'd never visited, and finally, the insurance cancellation documentation from the hospital.

Catherine read through each document without comment. She took notes in a leather-bound book, her pen moving steadily across the page. When she finished, she closed the folder and looked up at me.

"The clause is enforceable," she said simply. "The infidelity is documentable. And I would very much like to take your case."

I signed the retainer that afternoon.

Three days later, my phone chimed with a text message. Alexander's name appeared on the screen for the first time since the fire.

*I've consulted with my attorney. I expect the proceedings to reflect our mutual contributions to the marriage.*

He signed it with his first name only. No mention of my burns. No acknowledgment of the insurance cancellation. Just the assumption that I would continue to play my part in the story he'd written.

I read the message once, then set the phone face-down on the kitchen table. Emersyn was in the living room, but I didn't call for her. Instead, I turned back to the stack of legal documents Catherine had sent over—asset inventories, timeline reconstructions, financial statements. The arithmetic of one decade, laid out in columns and dates.

My hands moved across the papers, sorting and organizing. Outside, Brooklyn continued its day, unaware that someone was finally learning to count.
