Chapter 2

The front door clicked shut behind me at exactly midnight. I didn't hear it — I was already in Lorelei's car, watching the snow fall. But somewhere in that house, the sound echoed through empty rooms.

Ethan came home at 2 a.m.

I know this because I know him. The hospital would have kept him longer than he wanted. He would have stayed until Amber was stable, until she squeezed his hand and told him she was fine, until he felt like he'd done enough. Then he would have driven home through the snow, already composing the apology he'd give me in the morning. Something brief. Something that assumed I'd already forgiven him.

He walked into a silent house.

No lights left on. No note on the counter. Just the kitchen island, and what I'd left on it.

He saw the divorce agreement first. I know that too. It was on top, clean and signed, my name at the bottom in the same steady hand I use for everything. He would have stood there for a moment, not quite believing it. Then he would have picked up the other document.

The Ethan Howell Owner's Manual.

I spent six months writing it. Not in anger — I was never angry, not really. I wrote it the way I write everything: precisely, with documentation, with the particular satisfaction of a woman who has been paying attention for three years to a man who never once paid attention back.

Section One: Operating Conditions.

Subject requires coffee at exactly 7:14 a.m. Deviation of more than four minutes results in reduced functionality until approximately noon. Subject is, in fact, a morning person. Subject refuses to acknowledge this.

Section Two: Known Defects.

Subject is constitutionally incapable of locating items placed anywhere other than the exact spot he last put them. This includes his keys, his phone, his left shoe, and his conscience.

Section Three: Maintenance Requirements.

Subject has a chronic gastric condition that worsens under stress. Medication is in the cabinet, second shelf, behind the vitamins he also doesn't take. Reminders have been set on his phone under the contact name 'Doctor's Orders' because subject will not take them if he knows they came from his wife.

Section Four: Warranty Status.

Voided. Repeated user error. Non-negotiable.

Section Five: Instructions for Return.

This unit is being returned as-is. No refund requested. No exchange desired. Disposal at owner's discretion.

He read every page. I know because there were seventeen of them, and Ethan has never put down something that was about him.

Then he found the bank statement.

One hundred and twenty thousand dollars. Gone. Itemized, because I itemize everything:

Year One — Emotional labor, social management, and household administration: $38,000.

Year Two — Professional consulting services rendered under alias, credited to Howell Group revenue: $45,000.

Year Three — Continued services plus premium for sustained performance under adverse conditions: $37,000.

He reached for his phone.

My name wasn't there.

He scrolled twice, the way people do when they can't believe what they're seeing. He checked his texts. He checked his email. He tried Instagram, then LinkedIn, then the number he'd had memorized since the first year of our marriage.

Nothing. I was gone from every surface of his life, as cleanly as I had always been gone from the center of it.

He called Lorelei's office at 2:47 a.m. Her voicemail picked up on the second ring.

'You've reached Lorelei Wallace. I'm unavailable. If this is regarding Fallon Rose, I am her legal counsel and all communication must be directed in writing. Have a good evening.'

The house was very quiet after that.

At 3 a.m., his grandfather called.

Callan Howell does not call at 3 a.m. unless the building is on fire. Ethan answered on the first ring.

'The licensing department received a revocation notice tonight.' Callan's voice was the voice he used in boardrooms when someone had made a mistake that could not be undone. Controlled. Final. 'Every patent. Every proprietary license. The entire platform architecture.'

Ethan said something. I don't know what.

'The notice came from S.' A pause. The kind that has weight. 'Do you know who S is, Ethan?'

Silence.

'Your wife built it. All of it. Every product line, every system, every piece of technology you've taken credit for in every interview you've ever given.' Another pause. 'The woman you left at my dinner table tonight to go to the hospital. That is S.'

The silence on the line after that was the longest of Ethan's life.

I know because I know him. I know the exact shape of the moment when something he believed about himself stops being true.

I was somewhere over the Pacific by then, a glass of champagne in my hand, watching the clouds below the window turn gold at the edges.

First Christmas as myself.

I smiled and finished my drink.
