Chapter 1

I stood outside my own master bedroom. The heavy oak door sat an inch ajar.

"Spread your legs wider, Eddy," my husband’s voice echoed into the hallway.

"Fuck, Owen. Shove your cock deeper."

My younger sister’s voice.

I froze. The silver tray in my hands—holding the post-rehab vitamins I prepared for him every single night—rattled against my knuckles.

"Fucking finally," Owen grunted. "I waited three years to get my legs back, just to fuck your wet pussy."

"What about Nancy?" Eddy moaned loudly. "She still thinks you’re a cripple."

Skin slapped against skin. The heavy headboard banged furiously against the drywall.

"Nancy is a free fucking nurse," Owen spat, his tone thick with exertion. "When that car crash paralyzed me, I couldn't give you the life you deserved. I was half a man. I married her because she was useful. She wiped my ass, lifted my dead weight, and fed me. But my legs work now. I can finally fuck you the way you need."

"Ah! Yes... fuck me, Owen."

I shoved the door open. It slammed into the wall, cracking the plaster.

They didn't even jump.

Owen pulled his cock out of my sister. He didn't scramble for his clothes. He stood naked by the edge of the mattress, his muscular thighs flexing—the same thighs I had massaged for three hours a day, every day, to prevent muscle atrophy.

Eddy lazily pulled the silk sheet over her bare breasts. A smirk curled her painted lips.

"A free nurse?" I asked. My vocal cords felt like sandpaper.

Owen grabbed a dark robe, tying it around his waist. He walked over to the mahogany desk. He didn't look ashamed. He looked utterly bored.

"You were bound to find out this week anyway," he said. He picked up a thick manila folder and tossed it onto the glass coffee table. "Sign it."

I stepped into the room. The scent of sex hung heavy in the air. I ignored it, keeping my eyes locked on the man I had traded my youth to save.

"What is this?" I asked.

"Divorce papers," Owen replied flatly.

I dropped the silver tray. The pills scattered across the hardwood floor. I grabbed the folder and flipped it open. The legal jargon blurred together, but the bold numbers stood out. My jaw tightened.

"My shares," I whispered. "The twenty percent of Brown Group my father left me. Where are they?"

"Transferred," Owen stated. "You gave me power of attorney two years ago so I could manage things from my wheelchair. I moved your assets into my private holdings. You have nothing left, Nancy."

"You stole from me while I was bathing you?"

"I secured my company," he corrected.

Eddy giggled from the bed. She leaned over, opening the nightstand drawer. She pulled out a crisp white envelope and held it out to me.

"Don't be too mad at him, sister. Look at this."

I snatched the paper from her manicured fingers.

A clinical letterhead. A paternity test.

*Probability of Paternity: 99.9%.*

"I'm pregnant," Eddy announced. She stroked her flat stomach, her eyes gleaming with malice. "Owen’s baby is growing right here."

A sharp pain pierced my chest. Three years ago, when Owen’s car flipped during that corporate sabotage, I dragged him from the burning wreckage. A piece of jagged metal had pierced my abdomen. The doctors saved my life, but they removed my uterus.

"You lost your fertility pulling him from that wreck," Eddy continued, her voice laced with fake pity. "You can't even give him an heir. You took care of him for three years, so I'm fulfilling your dream of becoming a mother. Isn't that nice?"

My hands shook. The paper crumpled in my grip.

"You disgust me," I told her.

"Watch your mouth," Owen snapped. He stepped between us, shielding Eddy.

He opened the top drawer of his dresser and pulled out a small, navy velvet box. My stomach dropped.

He flipped it open. The Brown family heirloom diamond rested on the satin cushion.

"That’s my ring," I said. "You put that on my finger when you proposed."

"And you took it off to wash my bedpans," Owen replied cold and fast. "It belongs to the mother of my child now."

He took the ring out. He reached for Eddy’s left hand and slid the diamond onto her ring finger. It fit perfectly.

"Nancy, you should be satisfied," Owen said, his tone final. "I let you be the Mrs. Brown of Brown Group for three years. Now, give Eddy back her place."

I stared at the man I loved. The man I bled for. There was no warmth in his eyes, only calculating ice. All the late nights, the hospital visits, the tears I shed praying for him to walk again—it all amounted to this.

I walked over to the coffee table. I picked up the gold pen resting next to the divorce agreement.

A single tear escaped. It splashed onto the signature line, blurring the black ink.

I signed my name.

"Keep the ring," I whispered. "Keep the shares."

I dropped the pen. It clattered against the glass.

I turned my back on them and walked out the door.

I didn't look back as I descended the grand staircase. My entire life had just been erased in a matter of minutes. I had no money, no husband, and no family left to trust.
