Chapter 4

The coffee shop in Williamsburg had good light in the mornings. Floor-to-ceiling windows. Small tables. I'd been coming here for two years, always ordered the same thing—pour-over, no room for cream—and always sat in the back corner where I could work without anyone looking over my shoulder.

I was reviewing the November product launch timeline when someone slid into the seat across from me.

Matias.

He didn't ask. Didn't wait for permission. Just sat down like we were old friends meeting for a catch-up.

I looked at him. Looked back at my laptop screen.

"Talia." His voice was low. Controlled. "We need to talk."

I kept my eyes on the spreadsheet. Inventory projections. Ad spend allocation. Numbers that made sense.

"I've been more than patient," he said. He leaned forward. Elbows on the table. Hands clasped. "But you're making this difficult for no reason."

I took a sip of coffee. Didn't look up.

"The venue isn't about you anymore," he continued. His voice dropped lower. Harder. "It's about Kenna. She deserves a beautiful wedding. And you're standing in the way out of spite."

I saved my document. Closed my laptop.

"You don't want to make an enemy of me, Talia."

I looked at him then. Really looked. The collar he kept adjusting. The tightness around his mouth. The way his hands were clenched just a little too hard.

I picked up my coffee cup. Took another sip. Set it down carefully.

Then I stood up, slid my laptop into my bag, and walked out.

Behind me, I heard his chair scrape back. Heard him say my name once, sharp and loud enough that the barista looked up.

I pushed through the door and kept walking.

The next morning, I went back to the same coffee shop. Ordered the same drink. Sat in the same corner.

I didn't change my routine. Didn't give him the satisfaction.

---

Mrs. Castillo showed up at my mother's house on a Thursday afternoon.

I wasn't there. I only heard about it later, in vivid detail, from my mother herself—and from three separate neighbors who called to tell me they'd never seen anything like it.

Mrs. Castillo arrived at two-fifteen, carrying a white bakery box tied with ribbon. The kind of pastries that cost forty dollars and come from the place in Manhattan that requires reservations. She wore her church dress. Navy blue. Modest hemline. Pearl earrings.

She rang the doorbell and waited with her hands folded, the box balanced carefully in her arms.

My mother opened the door.

"Mrs. Parker," Mrs. Castillo said warmly. "I hope I'm not intruding. I brought something for us to share. I thought we could talk. Mother to mother."

My mother looked at her. Looked at the box. Didn't move from the doorway.

"I know this situation has been difficult for everyone," Mrs. Castillo continued. Her voice was soft. Sympathetic. "But I believe we can find a graceful solution. For the sake of family harmony."

"Family harmony," my mother repeated.

"Yes." Mrs. Castillo smiled. "Talia is a lovely girl. I've always thought so. But she's holding onto something that no longer serves her. A party reservation. That's all it is. And it's causing unnecessary tension."

My mother stood in the doorway for exactly forty-five seconds. Silent. Listening.

Then she spoke.

"Your son," she said, "lived off my daughter's paychecks for three years."

Mrs. Castillo's smile flickered.

"She paid his rent. Bought his laptop. Covered his insurance. Sent you twelve hundred dollars for dental work you said you couldn't afford. She funded your son's entire life while he was busy shopping for someone better."

Mrs. Castillo opened her mouth.

"She paid twenty-five thousand dollars in wedding deposits," my mother continued. Her voice didn't rise. Didn't waver. "For a wedding you canceled eleven days out. And you didn't offer her a dime. Not one dollar. You told her it was a life lesson."

Mrs. Castillo's face went tight.

"And now," my mother said, "you have the nerve—the audacity—to come to my home with a box of fancy pastries and ask for more."

She reached out, took the bakery box from Mrs. Castillo's hands, and threw it into the hallway.

It hit the floor. The ribbon came loose. Pastries rolled across the tile. Cream filling smeared on the baseboard.

"Get out of my building," my mother said.

Then she slammed the door.

The sound echoed through the entire floor. Mrs. Chen from 4B opened her door. Mr. Rodriguez from 4D stepped into the hallway. Mrs. Nguyen from 4C came out with her phone already recording.

Mrs. Castillo stood in the corridor, pastry cream on her shoes, staring at my mother's closed door.

She stood there for ten full seconds.

Then she turned and walked to the elevator, her heels clicking unevenly on the tile, tracking cream with every step.

When my mother called me that night, I could hear the satisfaction in her voice.

"She thought she could buy me with pastries," my mother said. "Like I'm as cheap as she is."

I smiled. First real smile in days.

"Thanks, Mom."

"Don't thank me," she said. "Just don't ever let people like that in your door."

I looked around my SoHo office. New locks. New space. New everything.

"I won't," I said.

And I meant it.
