Chapter 5

Two SUVs came up the dirt road at ten in the morning, kicking a plume of red dust that hung in the air long after they stopped. I saw them from the window before I heard them — black paint, rental plates, the kind of vehicles that had never driven anything rougher than a parking garage ramp.

I wiped the chalk from my hands onto my jeans and walked out to the gate.

Patrick got out first, in a suit that had no business being within a hundred miles of red dirt. Lauren followed in heels that sank half an inch into the ground with every step, her mouth already arranging itself into the expression she used for difficult conversations in public. Tyler came last, hanging back by the car door like he wasn't sure he was invited to his own arrival.

Behind me, through the schoolhouse window, twenty-two faces pressed close to the glass. Ainara was in the middle of them, not pretending to look at anything else.

I stopped on my side of the cattle gate and didn't open it.

"Savannah." Lauren's voice carried the particular warmth she saved for cameras. "Sweetheart, we've come to bring you home. This has gone on long enough, and we—"

"You are not my family."

I heard myself say it before I decided to. It came out flat, unhurried, the way Ainara answered a question she'd already made peace with. Lauren's mouth stayed open on the next word that never came. I had never interrupted my mother in my life. I had spent two years apologizing before she finished her sentences.

"You chose that," I said. "Both of you did. I'm respecting your choice."

Patrick stepped forward, hands up like he was approaching something that might startle. "There's the matter of the trust distribution. Your grandmother's shares vest this quarter regardless of — of everything. It's substantial, Savannah. It's yours by blood."

"I don't want it."

"You don't mean that."

"I mean it exactly." I looked at him, really looked, the way I used to look at him hoping he'd look back the same way. He didn't. He was looking past me, at the schoolhouse, at the children in the window, like he was trying to price the whole scene and coming up confused. "Tell your lawyers I decline. In writing, if they need it in writing."

Lauren tried again, softer this time, the register she used when the first approach failed. "We were worried sick. Do you understand what these last two weeks have been like for us?"

I thought about telling her. I thought about the word sitting behind my teeth — carcinoma, six weeks, a torn envelope on a hospital tray. I let it stay where it was. It wasn't hers to have. Not anymore. Not for free.

"Goodbye," I said, and turned around, and walked back toward the schoolhouse door, chalk dust still pale on my palms, twenty-two kids watching me come home to them instead.

The door closed behind me with an ordinary click.

---

Tyler stayed at the gate long after the SUVs pulled back onto the road, engines idling behind him, Patrick calling his name once and then giving up. He stood with his hands in his pockets and looked at the window, where one girl hadn't moved, hadn't blinked, was still watching him the way you'd watch weather you couldn't predict.

He got in the car. He didn't open his notes app that night. He tried, twice, thumb hovering over the blank line, and there weren't any words small enough to hold it.

---

At two in the morning, in an apartment forty floors above a silent city, Tyler couldn't sleep. He'd tried the usual things — a drink, the television, the ceiling. At some point he picked up his phone and dialed a number he still had from a favor two years old, a friend from Beacon Memorial's records office, and said the name before he'd fully decided to.

The file loaded slow. He read it twice to be sure he wasn't inventing it.

*Stage I invasive ductal carcinoma. Surgery recommended within six weeks.*

The date on the report was the morning of the wedding.

He sat without moving until the sky outside went from black to gray to the flat white of a New York morning. At eight, he called Conrad.

---

Conrad was on his knees in a storage unit in Queens, going through a box marked *S.R. — misc.* looking for a copy of the prenup he already had three copies of at the office. He found her notebook first, the battered one, and set it aside without opening it. Then a photograph of a woman he didn't recognize — Novalee, though he wouldn't learn the name until later. Then a pair of shoes with chalk dust worked into the seams.

Then the envelope. Torn clean in half, taped shut again by no one — just sitting there in two pieces the way he'd left it.

His phone was buzzing. Tyler's name on the screen.

He didn't answer it. He reached for the packing tape on the shelf instead, and pressed the two halves together, and read his own wife's diagnosis through the tear his hands had made — the word *carcinoma* split clean down the middle, healed crooked, like something that would never quite line up again.

For five years, I was Brogan Walton’s shadow—a contract companion kept behind closed doors, hidden away because of a cruel, fabricated rumor about my genetic health. I lived for the moments he looked my way, even if those moments were cold and transactional. Everything shattered when he returned from London early, tossed a legal document onto the table, and coldly announced the termination of our contract. He didn't just want me gone; he wanted me erased, offering a severance package to ensure I never spoke of the life I’d traded for his protection. As I signed the papers, my chest burned with the familiar, suffocating agony of my failing heart. I watched him check his watch, his impatience a blade in my back. When the door slammed shut, I finally collapsed, clutching the pill bottle that was my only lifeline, realizing I was dying—and he didn't care. I wasn't a lover or even a person to him. The next day, I saw her—Kori Barnett, the new CEO, the woman Brogan actually loved. She looked identical to me, down to the curve of her smile. I was never a Cinderella; I was just a cheap, disposable stand-in he’d groomed to be a mirror for his true obsession. Broken and discarded, I walked into the office, dropped my badge on the desk, and finally walked away. But as I stepped onto the street, I realized the nightmare wasn't over. A predator from his past was waiting for me, and when I looked at Brogan for help, he simply rolled up his window and drove away. I realized then that I had nothing left to lose. I took a deep breath, gripped the knife in my pocket, and decided that if I was going to die, I wouldn't go down as his victim.
