Chapter 1

I unlocked the door to my condo with routine confidence. The lock clicked. The familiar smell of my own space greeted me—clean walls, things I'd chosen, a life I'd built. Three days before my wedding, and I was here for the final walkthrough. Everything was supposed to be done.

The living room was fine. The hallway was fine. I took my time, running a hand along the wall, already thinking about what I'd tell Nathan about the seating arrangement. He'd want an opinion. He always wanted an opinion, as long as it matched his.

Then I pushed open the door to my home office.

And I stopped breathing.

The room was gone. My bookshelves, the ones I'd had built and filled with architectural journals and case law, were ripped from the walls. My drafting table lay in pieces against the far wall. In their place stood something I'd never seen: pink LED strips glowing along the ceiling, a ring light on a tripod, a vanity ringed in mirror bulbs, a blush velvet chair. Above it all, a neon sign in cursive.

Capri's Corner.

I stood in the doorway and didn't move. My hands went still at my sides. I heard footsteps behind me.

"Hey babe."

Nathan. I turned. He leaned in the doorframe, hands in his pockets, easy as anything.

"What is this?" I said.

"Capri needed a dedicated space," he said. "You can work at the firm. You have an office there anyway."

I stared at him. His face was open, pleasant, completely satisfied with himself. There was no apology in it. He was telling me the arrangement, not asking for forgiveness.

"You gutted my office," I said.

"You can work at the firm, babe," he repeated, like that settled it.

Behind him, in the blush velvet chair, Capri was scrolling her phone. She wore one of Nathan's shirts—an old gray one he never wore anymore. Her legs were crossed. She didn't look up at first. She let the silence sit there, and then she glanced over, a half-smirk on her face, watching to see what I would do.

I said nothing. That's what she wanted. She wanted me to crack, or to cry, or to make the first move so she could call it dramatic.

Nathan stepped closer. He lowered his voice, the tone he used when he wanted me to believe something. He put his hand on my stomach.

"You're not going anywhere now," he said.

I blinked. "What?"

"I heard you on the phone. About the doctor's appointment." His smile was smug, certain. "You're pregnant. I'm not stupid. And you know what that means. You're not going anywhere now."

He said it like he'd already turned the key. Like he'd found the lock on me and everything was finished. He never asked. He never confirmed. He just filled in the rest himself, with the version where he was in charge.

I looked at his hand on my stomach. Then I looked at him.

I removed his hand from my body. Gently. Calmly. The way you set down something that was never yours.

Then I picked up my bag and walked out.

"Come on," he called after me. "Don't be dramatic."

I was already in the elevator. The doors closed on his voice.

That night I sat in my car in the building's parking garage. Engine off. The yellow strip of light from the level above flickered. I didn't cry. My grief never came like that. It came at 2 a.m., alone, after the plans were already drawn.

I pressed my fingertips together. The gesture my colleagues knew. It meant the problem was already solved, and I was just waiting for the right moment to speak.

And I began to plan.

I rode the elevator back up. In the hallway, I saw Reece. He was coming out of his door with a bag of groceries. Dr. Reece Harrison. We'd said hello a hundred times. He was never loud, never pushy, always there.

He paused when he saw me. "You alright?"

"I'm fine," I said.

I meant it differently than he heard it. I'd never be fine the way I'd been before. But I was going to be fine in a new way.

He nodded. He didn't push. "Goodnight, Delaney."

"Goodnight."

I walked to my door. There was a small brown paper bag on the floor. Inside, chamomile tea. A handwritten note in neat script.

Your light was on past 2 again. This helps. — R.

I held it longer than I meant to. Then I went inside, made the tea, and opened my laptop.

I pulled up the original floor plans of my condo. The ones I'd drawn myself. The ones from the day I designed this space—every load-bearing wall, every partition, every square inch I knew better than anyone alive.

They'd taken my office. They'd taken me for a fool. They'd assumed I was pregnant and decided my whole life for me.

I sipped the tea.

And I started building my case.
