Chapter 3

Elena's POV

I reached for him first, and he didn’t hesitate the way I expected him to. The apartment stayed dark around us, city light through the windows instead of anything either of us bothered to switch on.

He kissed like he had nowhere else to be, unhurried in a way that made the whole night feel less like an escape and more like a decision. His jacket ended up on the floor. My heels came off somewhere near the door.

Then he pulled back, just enough to look at me.

“We don’t have to,” he said.

“I know.”

“I’m not saying that because I don’t want to.”

“I know that too.”

We didn’t. Somewhere between wanting to and choosing not to, the night changed shape into something quieter. He got up and came back with a blanket instead of anything else, and we ended up tangled together on the couch with the city still moving outside the windows, my head against his chest, his hand resting in my hair.

I fell asleep like that. Nobody but the two of us would ever know exactly what that meant. By morning, people would have their own version of what happened. I wasn’t interested in correcting any of them. I knew what had actually happened, and for once, that was enough.

I woke up on a couch that wasn’t mine, in an apartment that wasn’t mine, and felt calmer than I had in months.

That would have surprised Nathan most, if he could have seen it. Not the night before. This. Morning light through unfamiliar curtains, and I lay there running through everything I remembered instead of feeling the guilt I probably should have.

Adrian was already up, somewhere else in the apartment, coffee from the smell of it. I heard a cabinet open, then close, then the soft clink of a second mug being set down next to the first, like he’d started making enough for one and reconsidered halfway through. He didn’t come check on me. He didn’t need to perform concern the way Nathan would have. I appreciated that more than I expected to.

I didn’t get up right away. I let myself lie there and think about April instead.

April was the canceled dinner. He’d told me a client meeting ran long, and I believed him, because why wouldn’t I? It was only later, doing the math on a night I couldn’t stop replaying, that I realized the meeting he described didn’t match anything on his calendar.

May was the office party. I’d watched him from across the lobby, standing closer to Sienna by the elevators than the conversation required, his hand near her arm without touching it, the kind of near that means something to the person doing it even when nobody else in the room would call it anything.

June was the messages. I’d walked into the study to ask about seating charts and found his laptop open to a conversation he closed before I could read past the first line, fast enough that I understood exactly what that kind of fast meant.

None of it, alone, would have been enough to end anything. That was what I kept coming back to, lying on Adrian’s couch while the morning went gray-gold through the curtains. It wasn’t one betrayal. It was five months of small ones, stacked carefully enough that I could keep telling myself I hadn’t seen what I’d seen.

My phone was on the coffee table, screen dark. I turned it over. Four missed calls from Nathan, no voicemail left on any of them, like he’d hung up each time before he’d decided what to say. One from my mother, who was already asking, at eight in the morning, whether the flower arrangements had been confirmed, as if the last twelve hours hadn’t happened at all.

I didn’t call either of them back. I opened my calendar instead and looked at the appointment sitting there for eleven o’clock, saved under a name that wouldn’t mean anything to anyone else who saw my phone.

*E. Bennett, follow-up.*

Elaine Bennett was the lawyer I’d been seeing for six weeks, since the first night I let myself admit what I’d been watching happen. We’d already gone through the prenup twice.

There wasn’t going to be a third.

I locked my phone, set it back on the table, and for the first time in weeks, the future didn’t feel like a document waiting to be signed.
