Chapter 3

Harlow POV:

Prez's words were a detonation. The silence that followed was the stunned intake of breath from a hundred men.

Roman and Spencer looked like they'd been slapped, their faces pale with disbelief.

But Vivian... Vivian's face bloomed with a genuine, relieved smile. The look she gave me was pure approval.

I stood on the stage, the tension finally draining from my limbs, leaving me shaky. I had won. From rejected bride to the President's Old Lady in less than thirty minutes.

Frederick extended his hand. It was large, calloused, crisscrossed with the pale lines of old scars. A hand that held the power of life and death in this club.

I hesitated for only a second before placing my cold, trembling hand in his. His palm was warm and dry, a solid, grounding force.

He pulled me gently from the stage, and I landed steadily at his side.

He didn't let go. Instead, he laced his fingers through mine, a clear, possessive gesture for all to see.

I could feel the weight of every stare on our joined hands. I wasn't Harlow Parker, the charity case, anymore.

The old member who had objected spoke again, his tone softer now. "Prez, this is... hasty. Colby screwed up, but you shouldn't have to..."

I spoke before Frederick could, my voice clear and firm. "It's precisely because he is your son that you should. On the road, a father answers for his son. A son's debt is the father's to pay."

I laid the club's own code at his feet, binding his blood to the club's honor with a logic no patched man could shrug off.

"This may be Arizona," I added with a small, sharp smile, "but that law is universal. He tarnished the club's honor. As his father, and as its President, it's your duty to restore it."

My argument was a neat little trap, binding his responsibility to the club's honor. He couldn't refuse it without looking weak.

Frederick glanced down at me, a flicker of something-appreciation-in his dark eyes. He hadn't expected me to provide the justification for him.

He turned to the old member. "She's right. It's done. The Church will record it."

Vivian stepped forward, taking my other hand and patting it warmly. "Good girl. This is your home now."

She looked at her son, her eyes shining. "Frederick, you've finally done something to make my life easier." Her public endorsement silenced any remaining dissent.

My eyes scanned the crowd. I noticed a woman in expensive leather, her gaze like poison darts. No club patch on her vest, but she carried herself with an air of importance.

Blair Reynolds. The club Treasurer's Old Lady. A queen bee in the women's circle. My new life wasn't going to be easy.

Frederick must have felt me tense. His grip on my hand tightened before he raised our joined hands for all to see.

"Listen up!" his voice boomed. "The ceremony continues. But now, you're celebrating a new lady of the house!"

He nodded to his Enforcer. "Music! Beer! Let's get this party started!"

The roar of the music and the cheers of the men were deafening. It was a new party, a new celebration, and I was at the center of it.

Frederick didn't let me go. He led me through the throng, away from the main hall and toward the private section of the clubhouse.

His scent enveloped me-tobacco, whiskey, and leather. An aggressive, purely masculine scent.

We walked down a long corridor lined with photos and club honors. With every step, I felt the old, helpless Harlow sloughing off like dead skin.

He didn't look back at me, his voice a low rumble. "Remember what you said today, girl. Be my shield."

"Of course," I replied, my own voice steady. "And you remember your promise, President. Be my sanctuary."

He faltered for a half-step, surprised by my retort. A low, noncommittal grunt was his only reply as he continued walking, pulling me into my new life.
