Chapter 3

My hands did not shake.

That was the thing I noticed first. I was standing in the narrow fitting room with three inches of corridor visible through the gap in the curtain, watching my fiancé kiss another woman, and my hands were completely still.

I'd already opened the camera. Already switched to video. The little red dot pulsed in the corner of the screen like a heartbeat, steady and indifferent.

I watched it through the phone instead of with my own eyes. The screen made it smaller. More manageable. Like watching something happen in another country.

Dane's face was angled toward the light. Clear. Unmistakable. Helena's fingers moved through his hair and she made a soft sound—half laugh, half something else—and the boutique's white walls framed them like a portrait someone had commissioned and then decided they didn't want.

Seventeen seconds.

I stopped the recording. Checked the file. The audio was clean. The image was sharp. The corridor was completely, irrefutably recognizable—the garment bags, the cream-colored walls, the brass fixtures that cost more than most people's rent.

I airdropped it to myself. Then to the cloud folder with the password only I knew.

Then I pulled the curtain fully closed.

I smoothed the skirt of the gown with both palms. The ivory fabric was cool and heavy under my hands. I looked down at it for a moment—three months of fittings, three months of standing in this room while a seamstress pinned and adjusted and said *beautiful* in a reverent voice—and I felt something move through me that wasn't grief and wasn't anger. Just a quiet, final settling. Like a door closing on its own weight.

I stepped out into the light.

Dane turned when he heard me. His expression did the thing it always did—that practiced warmth, the slight softening around the eyes, the half-smile that I had once believed was involuntary.

He reached for my hands. I let him take them.

"Look at you," he said. Low voice. Intimate. For the seamstresses, for the room, for whatever audience he was always, always performing for. "You look perfect."

I looked at my reflection in the wide mirror. The woman looking back at me had a composed face and level eyes and a gown that moved when she breathed.

"I know," I said.

His smile widened. He thought it was confidence. He thought it was joy.

I let him think it.

---

The car was cold when I got in. I sat in the back seat and looked out the window at the street moving past—yellow cabs, a woman walking a dog, a food cart sending up a thin column of steam—and I felt very far away from all of it.

I opened the encrypted app. Naomi had given it to me two years ago during a particularly contentious client negotiation. *For when you need to say something that can't be unsaid,* she'd told me then, and I had laughed.

I wasn't laughing now.

I attached the file. Added the venue details. The AV technician's schedule—I'd gotten it from the wedding planner's shared folder three days ago, telling her I wanted to confirm the slideshow timing. She'd sent it over without a second thought.

I typed the instruction last.

*During the vows. The big screen. Make sure it loops.*

I read it once. Then I hit send.

The three dots appeared almost immediately. Naomi was always fast. I watched them pulse.

Then: *Sending me the file now. Give me a minute.*

I waited. The car moved through traffic. A light turned red and we stopped and I watched a couple on the sidewalk argue about something, their hands moving, their faces tight. Normal life. People in the middle of their ordinary disasters.

My phone buzzed.

*Okay. I've got it.*

Another pause. Longer this time. I could picture her watching it—her face doing that thing, the slight narrowing, the rapid calculation behind her eyes.

Then: *I'll handle it. You don't need to be there.*

I read those words three times.

*You don't need to be there.*

Something released in my chest. Not dramatically. Not the way it happens in movies, the sudden flood of tears, the gasping breath. Just a slow, quiet exhale. Like a fist unclenching. Like a window opening in a room that had been sealed too long.

For the first time since I'd sat on that cold marble bathroom floor at two in the morning with Dane's phone in my hand, I breathed all the way out.

The car moved through the green light.

I put my phone in my bag. I looked out the window at the city going past—all that noise, all those lives stacked on top of each other—and I thought about a morning flight. A one-way ticket. A room in London that my father had said was ready without asking a single question.

Seventeen seconds.

That was all it had taken.

I folded my hands in my lap and watched the city, and I did not look back.
