Chapter 1

Dane's penthouse smelled like pine and expensive candles. The kind of smell that costs money to manufacture. Forty people moved through the open floor plan, glasses catching the amber light, laughter bouncing off the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the city. Thanksgiving. Our first one hosting together.

I was standing near the kitchen island, half-listening to Dane's colleague talk about a ski trip, when the elevator doors opened.

I felt it before I saw it. A shift. Like a barometric drop before a storm.

Dane froze mid-sentence across the room. His hand tightened on his whiskey glass—I saw his knuckles go pale, just for a second. Then he smoothed it over so fast I almost convinced myself I'd imagined it.

Almost.

She was beautiful. That was the first thing. Tall, dark-haired, wearing a cream silk blouse tucked into wide-leg trousers. She moved through the room like she'd been here before. Like she'd been here many times before.

Dane crossed to her. His walk was different. Purposeful in a way it wasn't when he crossed the room toward me.

I kept smiling. I said something back to the ski trip man. I laughed at the right moment.

Dane's voice dropped when he reached her. I was twenty feet away and I couldn't hear the words, but I didn't need to. I watched his fingers brush her forearm. Once. Then again. The second time wasn't an accident.

She looked up at him with the specific calm of a woman who has seen this man at his worst and his best and has filed both away somewhere safe.

Someone touched my elbow. "Lila, have you met Marcus?"

"Not yet," I said. I turned. I smiled. I shook Marcus's hand.

For the next three hours, I said all the right things. I refilled glasses. I laughed. I stood beside Dane when he finally brought her over—Helena Lynch, he said, an old friend—and I shook her hand and looked her in the eye and said it was lovely to meet her.

Her grip was firm. Her eyes were careful.

"Dane talks about you," she said.

"Good things, I hope." The line came out easy. Practiced-sounding, even though I'd never said it before.

She smiled. "Of course."

Something cold settled into my chest and stayed there.

---

The guests left by midnight. Dane poured himself a last drink, kissed my temple, and fell asleep by one.

I lay beside him in the dark and listened to him breathe.

At one-thirty, I picked up his phone from the nightstand. He'd never given me the passcode. He'd never needed to, because I'd never asked. I knew his birthday. I typed it in.

It opened.

I found the messages in under a minute. The thread was labeled with her name, no emoji, no nickname. Just Helena.

I read slowly. I read everything.

*She's perfect—Helena will lose her mind.*

The timestamp on that message was four days before Dane asked me to dinner for the first time.

I kept reading. There were logistics. There was strategy. There was a message from three months ago that said the proposal timing was locked in—Helena's return flight from Paris landed the morning of the day he got down on one knee.

I set the phone back on the nightstand. I set it down gently, because I was aware, in a distant way, that I was being very careful not to make any sound.

I walked to the bathroom. I sat down on the cold tile floor with my back against the bathtub.

The floor was marble. It was very cold through the thin fabric of my pajamas. I focused on that. The cold. The specific temperature of it.

I didn't scream. There was nothing in me that wanted to scream. What I felt wasn't hot enough for screaming.

I sat there and I thought about the proposal. The rooftop of his parents' hotel. The lights he'd arranged. The ring he'd chosen—he'd told me he spent weeks on the ring, that he'd gone back four times before he was sure. I had believed him completely.

I thought about the way I'd called my father that night, still crying happy tears, and how Avery had said *I'm so glad, sweetheart* in that quiet way of his.

I thought about the baby. Eight weeks. I hadn't told Dane yet. I'd been waiting for the right moment.

There was no right moment. There never had been.

By the time gray light started showing under the bathroom door, I had stopped feeling most things and started thinking clearly instead. That was familiar ground. I knew how to work from there.

I made a list in my head. What I needed. What I had. What came next.

---

In the morning I made coffee. I made it well, the way I always did, because the ritual mattered and because nothing about my face could change.

Dane came into the kitchen looking rested. He kissed my cheek. I handed him his cup.

"What's your day look like?" I asked.

He told me. I listened. I nodded at the right times.

The moment the elevator closed behind him, I set down my cup and called London.

My father answered on the second ring.

"Dad." My voice came out steady. I was almost surprised. "I need to come home after the wedding. I'll explain when I get there."

A pause. Not a long one.

"Your room is ready," he said.

No questions. No alarm. Just those four words, and the steadiness in his voice.

It was the first true thing I'd heard in twenty-four hours.

I stood at the kitchen window and looked out at the city and began, quietly and methodically, to plan.
