Chapter 2

The morning after the funeral, I sat at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee that had gone cold an hour ago and watched myself trend.

*Wife Loses It at Charity Funeral.*

They couldn't even get that right. I'd been his fiancée for four years.

The clip started with me lunging up off the floor, crying, my hands red and wild. It didn't show the shelf or Victoria's palm against the frame. It didn't show the glass. It didn't show Brandon's hand on my shoulder.

I dragged the progress bar back and played it again. Then again. Each time I heard my own voice crack on *turn it off*, and each time it sounded more like the person the comments said I was.

My phone buzzed with notifications. Tags, shares, strangers in my DMs. I swiped them away and they came right back.

Beneath all of it, in my voice memos, sat a file labeled *Mom, 2:14 a.m.* The night before she died, I'd held my phone against her ear so she could hear Brandon on speaker. *I'll take care of her, Linda. I promise.* She'd smiled with her eyes closed, and I'd saved the recording because I wanted to keep that smile.

Brandon walked in, knotting his tie, and reached past me for the coffee pot.

"You promised her you'd take care of me," I said.

He glanced at the screen and poured his cup. "Erin, I'm not responsible for how people react to your behavior."

"*My* behavior."

"You were the one screaming." He blew on his coffee. "I just pressed record."

I stared at him, but he was already scrolling his own phone like I'd asked about the weather.

I turned back to my laptop. The credit card bill had been due yesterday, and I'd forgotten it in all the funeral planning. I clicked *Pay from shared account.*

*Transaction declined. Insufficient funds.*

That wasn't possible. I'd put every spare dollar into that account for two years. It was supposed to cover Mom's private nurse, the one insurance wouldn't pay for.

I opened the transaction history.

*Transfer – $8,500.* Three weeks before she died. *Transfer – $12,000.* Four days later. Then another, and another. I added them up twice because my brain refused to accept the first total.

Forty-two thousand eight hundred dollars.

"Brandon." My voice came out flat. "Where's the money?"

He didn't even pretend to be confused. "It was a temporary loan. Victoria's foundation had a cash flow problem before the gala. I'm moving it back next quarter."

"That was my mother's care fund."

"And your mother doesn't need it anymore."

A thick courier envelope sat on the table by his keys. It had been there since last night. The flap was already torn open, and the edge of a glossy page stuck out.

I pulled it free.

*Villa Serena, Positano. Private Coastal Residence. Guests: Mr. Brandon Hale, Ms. Victoria Lane.* Paper-clipped behind it were two first-class boarding confirmations.

The dates were the week of March ninth.

That was the week Mom kept asking if Brandon was coming. The week I told her he was traveling for work, and she said, *That's okay, sweetheart. He's busy.* That was the week I sat in the hospital billing office and asked if I could split the nursing invoice into payments, and Brandon told me over the phone to stop wasting money on extras.

The invoice was still in the drawer beside me. Unpaid. *Balance due: $6,340.*

"You used my mother's medical savings to take Victoria to Italy?"

He set his mug down hard. "It was a charity networking trip. You're twisting everything."

"There's one villa. One bedroom suite, Brandon. It says it right here."

"Because I'm not going to pay for two." He took the papers out of my hands and tossed them back onto the table. "Do you know how many donors were there? Do you know what that trip did for her foundation?"

"I know what it did for my mother. She asked for you every day."

For half a second, something moved across his face. Then it was gone.

My phone rang. *Dana Kowalski – Brightline PR.* My supervisor.

I stepped into the living room to answer. "Dana, I can explain the video—"

"I'm going to stop you there." Her voice was clipped. "Victoria Lane filed a formal complaint this morning. As a client. She says she feels unsafe working with you."

"She pushed my mother's portrait off a shelf."

"Erin, I'm not here to litigate the funeral. Two other accounts called before eight. Your breakdown is costing your company money, Erin." She exhaled. "You're suspended from client work, effective immediately. HR is opening an internal review. You'll get the email."

It arrived before she even hung up. *Notice of Temporary Suspension.* I stood in the middle of the living room reading it, my thumb hovering over the screen.

The doorbell rang.

Brandon got there first. Victoria stood on the step holding a pale pink box from Maison Clair, the bakery where a dozen macarons cost more than my weekly groceries. She wore the champagne wool coat I'd helped her pick out last fall, back when I thought she was my friend.

"I just wanted to check on her," she said softly. "I'm not angry, Erin. Really. I forgive you."

"You forgive me," I repeated.

"Grief makes people do things they don't mean." She held out the box. "I understand. I really do."

Brandon touched her elbow. "That's generous of you, Vic. I'll put these away."

He carried the box into the kitchen. The second his back turned, Victoria stepped close enough that I could smell her perfume.

"Have you checked the comments today?" Her voice dropped to almost nothing. "Isn't it sad? Everyone believes me now."

My eyes went to her collar. A diamond pendant hung there, a teardrop on a fine gold chain.

Last month, I'd found that same velvet box in Brandon's briefcase. *A client gift,* he'd said. *Don't open it.*

Victoria saw me looking and tucked it under her coat, smiling.

I turned and walked into the bedroom.

My fingers were steady when I twisted off my ring. The diamond caught the light from the window, the same stone he'd slid onto my finger on a pier in Monterey. I carried it back out to the kitchen, set it squarely on top of the Positano confirmation, and returned to the bedroom without a word.

I pulled my suitcase out of the closet and started packing. Jeans. Sweaters. My laptop. Then Mom's things from the corner: her reading glasses, her cardigan, the shoebox of letters. A pharmacy bag sat on the dresser, still sealed, with gauze pads and a pack of the lavender lotion she liked. I'd bought it the day before she died. I put it in the suitcase too.

Brandon leaned against the doorframe and watched. He didn't try to stop me.

"Where exactly are you planning to go?" he asked. "You don't have savings. You're about to lose your job. This is a performance, Erin. You want me to come after you."

I opened my banking app and revoked his authorization on the shared account. *Access removed.* I screenshotted the transaction history, every transfer, and attached it to an email to Rachel Ostrowski, the attorney who'd handled Mom's will.

*I need to talk to you about my engagement. Today, if possible.*

I hit send.

Out in the kitchen, Brandon must have noticed the ring, because I heard him laugh.

"Cute," he called. "So how many nights are we doing? Two? Three?"

I zipped the suitcase and wheeled it into the hall. I took the apartment key off my ring and set it on the entry table, right next to the bakery box.

"You'll be back the second you realize you can't afford to live without me," he said.

"You don't need to keep track of when I'm coming home anymore." I pulled up the suitcase handle. "Then enjoy the silence."

Victoria stood near the door, and as I passed her, she lifted her hand and smoothed it slowly over Brandon's chest, right over his heart. She looked at me while she did it.

He didn't move her hand.

That was the last thing I saw before the door closed behind me.

The hallway was quiet. I made it to the elevator before my phone buzzed.

*Brightline HR: Formal Review Proceedings – Erin Carver. Attendance mandatory.*

Then it buzzed again.

Brandon.

*Don't forget. I still have access to your mother's paperwork.*
