Chapter 1

The blue light of my phone cast shadows across the darkened bedroom as I scrolled mindlessly through social media. It was nearly midnight, and Darius slept beside me, his breathing deep and even. Ten days before our wedding, and here I was, still working on captions for his next 'Captain Darius' post. The irony wasn't lost on me.

I had been tagged in a comment thread, nothing unusual there. But the username caught my eye – @ghostofmidnight. Something about the writing style, the specific turns of phrase, felt achingly familiar. I clicked on the profile. No photos, just text posts. I scrolled back through months, then years, of entries.

My blood turned to ice as I read the first post that mentioned me by name. 'June thinks she's so clever with her little director dreams. Pathetic how she keeps trying to make me look good when she should be worried about herself.' The timestamp showed it was posted the day after I'd won a small directing award in film school – an event Darius had claimed he was 'too proud' to attend because he didn't want to 'steal my spotlight.'

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. My hands didn't even shake as I continued scrolling through post after post, each one a fresh knife to the heart. 'Her hairline is so weird. Why does she think anyone would want to look at her?' 'She actually believes I love her. It's almost sad how desperate she is.' 'The way she keeps sacrificing her career for me makes me sick. I don't need a doormat, but the content is good for the brand.'

I took screenshots methodically, saving them to a folder I created called 'Receipts.' My mind was eerily calm, as if I'd stepped outside my body and was watching this happen to someone else. Seven years. Seven years of building his brand, writing his captions, directing his videos, negotiating his sponsorships. Seven years of telling myself that supporting someone I loved was a form of creation.

Then I found the videos.

Buried in the account's saved files were dozens of clips. I clicked on one, and my stomach lurched as I saw Darius and a woman I recognized as Lennon Salazar, his colleague from the airline. They were in a hotel room, the timestamp showing it was from our anniversary last year – the same night he'd texted me that his flight was delayed and he'd be staying over at a layover hotel.

I clicked on another. Our birthday. Another. The week after my miscarriage, when I'd been hemorrhaging alone in our apartment, calling his phone repeatedly as I bled through three sets of sheets. He hadn't answered. He'd been with her.

I sat motionless in the blue glow of my phone, the silence of the penthouse pressing against my ears. The Seattle skyline glittered outside our floor-to-ceiling windows, a view I'd once found breathtaking. Now it just looked cold.

I opened my laptop, my fingers moving with precision born of years of practice. I logged into every account I'd built for him – Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, the email where all the brand deals came through. I changed every password, transferred every ownership, downloaded every piece of analytics data. I was the ghost in the machine of his entire public identity, and now I was reclaiming what was mine.

When I finished, I slipped into the bathroom, closed the door, and turned on the shower to mask my voice. I pulled out a burner phone I'd purchased months ago, after a particularly cruel argument with Darius that had left me wondering, not for the first time, if I was losing my mind. I dialed a number I knew by heart but had never called before.

'Caspian?' My voice sounded foreign to my own ears – steady, calm, as if I were discussing the weather rather than the complete implosion of my life.

'June?' His voice was instantly alert. 'What's wrong?'

'I need to leave,' I said simply. 'I need to disappear for a while.'

There was a pause, and I could almost see him straightening in his chair, his mind already working through logistics and solutions. 'Tell me what you need,' he said, not asking for explanations or offering empty platitudes.

'Everything,' I whispered. 'I need everything.'

Within forty-eight hours, he had arranged it all – flights, housing, legal counsel. I listed our condo through a discreet agent, accepting a cash offer that would close in three days. I moved through it all like a sleepwalker, efficient and hollow.

Then Darius came home with Lennon, her wrist wrapped in a dramatic bandage. 'She sprained it on the flight,' he explained, settling her onto our sofa. 'I told her she could stay here while she recovers. It's the least we can do for a colleague.'

I watched as she touched his arm with familiar ease, as she looked around our apartment with the proprietary gaze of someone already planning redecorations. 'June, could you get me some water?' she asked sweetly, her fingers trailing along the base of her throat in that unconscious tell I now recognized as her lie gesture.

I nodded, my face a mask of compliance, and went to the kitchen. But behind my eyes, a storm was gathering – quiet, methodical, and absolutely devastating.
