Chapter 3

"You knew." Kalen blocked the driveway, planting both hands flat on the hood of the waiting town car.

I stopped on the top step of my parents' porch. The morning air bit at my bare arms.

"Move, Kalen." I adjusted the strap of my purse.

"The Morgan-Mercer empire. A century of generational wealth." He pointed a shaking finger at Simon, who stood by the open passenger door. "You planned this. You knew exactly who he was when you pulled him from that piano."

"If I knew his identity, would I have asked him to marry me?" I laughed, a sharp, bitter sound that echoed in the quiet street. "I married him because he reached out his hand when I was at my absolute lowest. You left me at the altar for a phantom limp."

Kalen flinched. The fight drained out of his posture. "Ruby, listen to me. I made a mistake."

"You made a choice." I descended the stairs. "And now you have to live with it."

"You threw away our future," Kalen pleaded, taking a desperate step toward me. "We had a ten-year plan, Ruby. Our families were merging. You are throwing it all away for a stunt."

"Your plan included running to another woman the second she cried," I shot back. "That is not a merger. That is a hostage situation."

"You think this makes you powerful?" Kalen sneered, his panic twisting into venom. "Marrying a billionaire out of spite?"

"I think it makes me free." I held his gaze. "You wanted a woman who would wait for you to finish playing savior. That was never going to be me."

"He is using you!" Kalen shouted, his voice cracking. "These old-money families eat outsiders alive. You won't survive his world."

"I survived you." I stepped around him and slid into the leather seat.

Simon closed the door, shutting out Kalen's frantic excuses. The engine purred to life. Through the tinted glass, I watched Kalen stare at our retreating bumper. The realization finally hit his eyes—he hadn't just lost a fiancée. He had handed me the keys to a kingdom that dwarfed his own.

Simon merged the car onto the avenue. "He lacks composure."

"He lacks a spine," I corrected.

"He will try to sabotage you," Simon warned, steering through the morning traffic. "A man like Kalen does not handle losing well."

"Let him try. He is too busy playing nurse to focus on his own company."

My phone buzzed against my leg. A news alert flashed across the screen.

*Kalen Thorne Rushes Distraught Ex to Hospital.*

I tapped the link. A video played instantly. Bella sobbed outside Mount Sinai Hospital, clutching Kalen’s arm. She leaned heavily on her right leg, her face buried in his shoulder. Flashbulbs illuminated her tear-stained cheeks.

"My injury flared up from the stress of the wedding," Bella wept to the reporters. "Kalen is just being a good friend. Please respect our privacy."

"A calculated performance," Simon noted, glancing at the screen. "She wants the public to view her as a victim, not a homewrecker."

"She wants Kalen to feel like a hero," I said, turning the volume down. "She knows he needs to feel needed."

"My public relations team can scrub this from the internet in ten minutes," Simon offered. "Say the word."

"No." I locked the screen and tossed the device into my bag. "Let them dig their own graves. I have a family dinner to survive."

The Morgan estate loomed at the edge of the city, a sprawling stone mansion surrounded by wrought-iron gates.

"Ready?" Simon fixed his cuffs as we stood in the grand foyer. He wore a midnight-blue tuxedo that commanded immediate authority.

"Always." I smoothed the velvet of my evening gown.

We entered the main banquet hall. The room fell silent for a fraction of a second before the whispering ignited. The same socialites who mocked my ruined wedding yesterday now rushed forward, their eyes gleaming with greedy ambition.

"Ruby, darling! You look absolutely stunning." A woman in emerald silk grabbed my elbow. It was the same woman who had called me 'dumped' just twenty-four hours ago.

"I always knew Kalen wasn't good enough for you," she lied smoothly.

"Thank you, Brenda." I pulled my arm away.

"Congratulations on the union, Mrs. Morgan." A tech CEO bowed his head respectfully. "We would love to host you both in the Hamptons next weekend."

"Mrs. Morgan, we were just discussing the upcoming charity gala," another socialite chimed in, blocking our path. "We would be honored if you chaired the committee."

"I will have my assistant review the schedule," I replied, giving her nothing.

I offered polite, empty smiles. Simon guided me through the sea of hypocrites, his hand resting lightly on the small of my back.

We stopped in front of a secluded alcove. An older man sat in a leather wingback chair. His silver hair was perfectly groomed. A heavy wooden cane rested against his knee.

"Grandfather," Simon greeted. "This is Ruby."

Arthur Morgan did not offer his hand. He inspected me from head to toe, his gaze sharp and unforgiving.

"A Miller," Arthur stated, his voice resembling grinding stones. "A mid-level real estate family. And a jilted bride, no less. You bring a circus to our doorstep, Simon."

"I brought my wife," Simon replied, his tone dropping several degrees.

"She is a liability." Arthur tapped his cane on the marble floor. "The Morgan name requires absolute perfection. It requires pedigree. What does she bring to the board besides tabloid gossip?"

I stepped forward. I refused to hide behind my new husband.

"I bring a twenty percent expansion in commercial zoning," I said, meeting the patriarch's harsh glare. "I finalized the Hudson Yards acquisition for my father's firm single-handedly. I can do the same for the Morgan-Mercer holdings."

Arthur raised a thick white eyebrow. "You speak boldly for someone who was crying in a dressing room yesterday."

"I did not shed a single tear yesterday," I corrected him. "I found a solution. Just like I will find a solution for your portfolio."

"This isn't playing house, little girl," Arthur challenged. "The Queens waterfront project has been dead in the water for two years because the city council refuses to rezone."

"They refused because your previous negotiators tried to bully them," I countered. "I know the councilman. I know what he actually wants."

"Give me the project." I kept my chin high. "I will secure the permits by the end of the quarter. If I fail, I will step away from the family business entirely."

Simon shifted his weight. "Ruby, you do not need to do this."

"Deal," Arthur interrupted. A humorless smirk cracked his weathered face. "Do not disappoint me. I do not tolerate failure."

An hour later, I stood on the terrace, letting the cool night breeze wash over me. The suffocating tension of the ballroom faded away.

Simon walked out through the glass doors. He handed me a flute of sparkling water.

"You owe him nothing," Simon said softly. "My grandfather is a relic. You did not have to take on that project."

"I refuse to be a trophy." I gripped the cold crystal stem. "They think I am just a desperate woman who got lucky. I need to prove I belong here. I need to prove it to myself."

Simon reached out. His knuckles brushed my cheek, a fleeting contact that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Ruby, you don't need to be the perfect woman in anyone's eyes," he murmured, his dark eyes locking onto mine. "You just need to be yourself."

Before I could respond, a rapid succession of chimes erupted from his jacket pocket.

He pulled out his phone. His brow furrowed as he read the screen.

"What is it?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat.

"Your ex-fiancé's media stunt at the hospital." Simon turned the screen toward me. "It seems a disgruntled nurse just leaked Bella's official medical scans to the press."

I stared at the glowing display.

The x-rays were crystal clear. The attached doctor's notes were highlighted in bright yellow text.

Bella’s leg was not injured.

The bone had fully healed four years ago. There was absolutely zero structural damage, no inflammation, and no medical reason for her to use a wheelchair.

She had been faking the pain the entire time.
