Chapter 2

I heard about the dinner through Cassie Vane.

She texted me at nine-fifteen Thursday evening, while I was still at my desk reviewing Q4 projections. The message was short. *Saw Collin and Harlow at Nobu Private. Just FYI.* Then a pause. Then: *She looked good. I'm sorry.*

I set my phone face-down on the desk.

Outside my office window, Manhattan hummed its usual indifferent hum — headlights and sirens and the low mechanical breath of a city that never stopped moving. I sat very still inside all of it.

I picked up my pen and went back to the projections.

I stayed until eleven. I finished everything on my list. I turned off the lights, took the elevator down, and walked to the corner to hail a cab. The night air was cold and smelled like exhaust and rain. I stood on the curb and thought about nothing in particular.

I went home.

He called me into his office at nine the next morning.

I'd been up since six. I'd already answered forty emails, confirmed two vendor calls, and drunk a full cup of coffee before his assistant's name appeared on my screen. I wore the gray wool blazer. The one that fit perfectly. I took the elevator up to the forty-second floor and walked past his assistant with a nod and pushed open the glass door.

Collin was at his desk. He didn't stand.

"Sit down," he said.

I sat.

He was looking at something on his screen, not at me. His jaw was set the way it got when he'd already decided something and was now simply announcing it.

"Harlow will be taking on a more active role in our social commitments going forward," he said. "Events, dinners, that kind of thing. I need you to wrap up whatever joint appearances are still on the calendar and hand off anything that isn't time-sensitive."

I watched the side of his face.

"Wrap up," I repeated.

"Yes." He clicked something on his screen. "There shouldn't be much. A few charity functions. You know how to handle it."

He said *you know how to handle it* the way you'd say it to an assistant. Competent. Reliable. Forgettable.

I folded my hands in my lap.

"Is there anything else?" I asked.

He glanced up then, just for a second. Something moved across his face — not guilt, not quite. More like a brief awareness that he was looking at a person. Then it passed.

"No," he said. "That's all."

I stood, smoothed my blazer, and walked out.

His assistant gave me a careful smile as I passed. I returned it. I took the elevator back down to my floor, sat at my desk, and opened my calendar. I started making calls.

The contract amendment arrived at 11:04 PM.

I was in bed but not asleep, reading on my tablet, when my work email pinged. I almost ignored it. I almost let it sit until morning.

I opened it.

It was forwarded from our legal team — no note, no context, just a document attached. *Hudson Yards Mixed-Use Development — Assignment of Primary Contract.* I tapped it open.

I read the first page.

Then I read it again.

The project had been reassigned. Effective immediately. The receiving entity was a company I didn't recognize at first — *Mendoza Creative Holdings LLC* — incorporated four days ago, with a registered address in Tribeca.

Four days ago.

Harlow had been out of prison for four days.

I set the tablet down on the nightstand. I lay on my back and stared at the ceiling. The room was dark and very quiet.

Eight months. I had spent eight months on that deal. I'd flown to Chicago four times, to London twice. I'd sat across from developers and city planners and zoning attorneys and smiled and argued and revised and negotiated until the number had a comma and six zeros behind it. I knew every clause in that contract. I had written half of them.

Harlow Mendoza had been a free woman for four days.

I didn't move for a long time.

At some point I got up and went to the kitchen. I poured a glass of water and stood at the counter and drank it slowly. The city outside the window was quieter now, just the occasional sweep of headlights across the ceiling.

I thought about the first site visit. February, freezing, the Hudson gray and choppy in the distance. I'd worn the wrong shoes and my feet had gone numb by noon and I hadn't cared because the numbers were working and the deal was real and I'd built it out of nothing.

I rinsed the glass and set it in the rack.

I went back to the bedroom, picked up my phone, and opened a new message to Diana Ashford.

*Accelerate the timeline,* I typed. *I want everything moved before the end of the week.*

Her response came back in under three minutes.

*Already on it.*

I closed my phone.

I did not sleep.
