My Fiancé Humiliated Me, So I Married His Brother

The penthouse breathed old money—polished wood, aged wine, a three-generation fortune that never had to announce itself. I stood beside Julian in the elevator, my grandmother's emerald pendant resting against my collarbone, worn on purpose so Reuben Hart would see the one link to the woman who raised me. Then Julian humiliated me in front of everyone. So I married his brother. Now the Hart dynasty is at war, and the man who threw me away is learning exactly what he lost.

Chapter 4

Jensen stood in his study, phone pressed to his ear. The city lights spread below like a circuit board. Cold. Precise.

"Two rooms," he said quietly. "Warehouse in Red Hook. Separate entrances. You call Julian. Give him the address. Tell him he can only save one."

The operative on the line confirmed the details. Jensen's fingers tapped once against the desk. A tell he'd trained himself out of years ago. It was coming back now.

"The retractable blade," Jensen continued. "Stage it in Elora's room. Make it look real. But she is not harmed. Not a scratch. Not a bruise. Are we clear?"

"Crystal."

"If anything goes wrong—"

"It won't."

Jensen ended the call. Sat in the dark for a long time. This wasn't about exposing Laylah. That would come later. This was about cutting the last thread. The one Elora couldn't cut herself.

He'd watched her for fifteen years. Watched her bind herself to Julian with invisible chains. Gratitude. Obligation. A debt that was never his brother's to collect.

Some chains had to be broken from the outside.

He picked up his phone again. Texted his driver. *Be ready at midnight.*

Then he waited.

The call came at eleven forty-three.

Julian's voice was raw. Panicked. "They have her. They have Elora. And Laylah. I don't— they said I can only save one. Jesus Christ, Jensen, what do I do?"

Jensen closed his eyes. "Where?"

Julian gave him the address. "I'm going now. I'm—"

"Julian."

Silence.

"Choose carefully," Jensen said quietly.

He hung up.

Twenty minutes later, his driver pulled up outside the Red Hook warehouse. Jensen sat in the back seat, hands folded, watching the entrance. Waiting.

Julian's car screeched to a stop. He bolted out. Ran inside.

Jensen checked his watch.

Three minutes passed.

Then Julian emerged. Laylah in his arms. Her face pressed against his shoulder. His expression wild. Terrified. Relieved.

He didn't look back.

Jensen's jaw tightened.

He texted the operative. *Bring her out.*

Inside the warehouse, Elora lay on the concrete floor. The cold seeped through her clothes. Her side throbbed where the blade had pressed — not pierced, just pressed hard enough to bruise. Hard enough to feel real.

She'd heard Julian's footsteps. Heard him run past her door. Heard the other door open. Heard Laylah's sob. Heard them leave.

She stared at the ceiling. Water stains. Exposed pipes. Her breath made small clouds in the frozen air.

"Now we're even," she whispered. Her voice cracked. "The life I owed you is paid."

The door opened. A man in black tactical gear crouched beside her. Pulled the retractable blade away. "Miss Stephens. It's over. You're safe."

She sat up slowly. Her hands were shaking. Not from fear. From something else. Something that felt like a door closing.

"He chose her," she said.

The operative didn't answer.

Elora stood. Her legs were steady. That surprised her. She thought they'd give out. But they held.

The operative led her through the warehouse. Out the side entrance. A black car waited. Engine running. Back door open.

Jensen sat inside.

Elora climbed in. Closed the door. Stared straight ahead.

"Are you hurt?" Jensen asked.

She shook her head.

Silence. The driver pulled away from the curb. The warehouse disappeared behind them.

"He didn't hesitate," Elora said finally. Her voice was flat. Empty. "Not for a second."

Jensen's hands rested on his lap. Controlled. Still. "No."

"I thought—" She stopped. Swallowed. "I thought maybe if it was real. If the choice was life or death. He'd—"

"He wouldn't."

She turned to look at him. His profile was sharp in the passing streetlights. His jaw set. His eyes forward.

"You knew," she said.

He met her gaze. "Yes."

"You wanted me to see it."

"Yes."

She looked down at her hands. They were still shaking. She pressed them flat against her thighs.

"Set the date," she said quietly.

Jensen didn't move. "Are you certain?"

"Set the date."

He pulled out his phone. Typed something. Put it away. "One week. The Hamptons estate. Private ceremony."

Elora nodded.

The car turned onto the bridge. Manhattan spread out ahead. All those lights. All those people. All those lives happening in rooms she'd never see.

She felt nothing.

That was the strangest part.

She'd expected rage. Or grief. Or the kind of pain that carved you hollow.

But there was nothing. Just a vast, cold silence where Julian used to live.

"Thank you," she said.

Jensen's eyes flickered. "For what?"

"For showing me the truth."

He didn't answer. Just looked out the window as the city blurred past.

When they reached her building, he didn't try to follow her up. Didn't ask if she was okay. Didn't offer comfort she didn't want.

He just said, "One week."

She nodded. Got out. Walked inside.

In her apartment, she stood in the dark for a long time. Then she went to the bathroom. Lifted her shirt. A bruise was already forming where the blade had pressed. Dark purple. Shaped like a crescent moon.

She touched it gently. It hurt. But not the way she'd expected.

She lowered her shirt. Looked at herself in the mirror.

Her face was calm. Composed. A stranger's face.

She whispered to her reflection: "You're free now."

Then she went to bed.

And for the first time in three years, she slept through the night without dreaming of Julian Hart at all.
