Chapter 4

The clasp clicked shut.

That sound. That small, mechanical sound. I heard it over everything — over the murmur of the crowd, over the blood rushing in my ears, over the wet rasp of my own breathing. A tiny click, and it was done.

Katalina touched the pendant with two fingers. She smiled the way people smile when they've won something they were never supposed to have.

I was still on the ground.

I didn't look away. I had made myself watch every second of it, and I kept watching even now, even after. Dean smoothed Katalina's collar with both hands — careful, tender, the way you'd adjust something precious. His hands were steady. They had been steady the whole time.

That was the thing I couldn't stop seeing. Not the necklace. Not Katalina's smile. His hands. Steady.

I had saved for four months to buy that pendant. Four months of a stipend that was already barely enough, four months of skipping the things that felt like luxuries — the good coffee, the new boots, the occasional dinner that wasn't eaten standing up. I'd found the jeweler through a colleague. Actual meteorite fragment, the craftsman had told me. A piece of something that had survived burning through the atmosphere and landing on this earth intact.

I thought that meant something.

I pressed my thumb hard against the scar on my wrist.

Something behind my eyes went very quiet. Not a scream. Not a sob. Something worse than either — a silence, deep and total, like a room after a door has been locked from the outside. I waited for the grief to arrive. For the wave of it. For something that would at least confirm that what I was feeling was real.

Nothing came.

Just the quiet.

The last thread of whatever I had been holding onto didn't break. It didn't snap or fray or tear. It simply stopped existing. Like a signal that cuts out mid-transmission. One moment it's there. Then it isn't. And the frequency it occupied just becomes empty air.

I became aware of the crowd again. Slowly, the way you become aware of a sound you've been hearing for a while without registering it.

They were still there. The residents in their scrubs. The administrative staff with their badges. The nurses who had stepped outside for air and stayed for something they couldn't name. They stood in a loose ring around the scene, and not one of them moved.

Some of them murmured to each other. Some looked at their shoes. One woman near the back had her hand pressed over her mouth.

I scanned the faces. I don't know what I was looking for. Something. Anyone.

A junior resident near the back of the cluster met my eyes. Young. Dark-haired. Her face was pale and she was very still. She held my gaze for exactly one second — long enough for me to see that she understood what she was watching — and then she looked away.

That was it. That was all.

The Vice Chair's title. The published paper. The institutional machinery of two people who had learned how to use this place like a weapon. It held the crowd the way walls hold a room — invisible, structural, absolute. No one was going to move.

I was alone on the pavement in front of the hospital that bore my family's name, and no one was going to move.

Dean glanced at me one last time.

Not with cruelty. That would have required something from him — some expenditure of feeling I no longer believed he had. It was an administrative look. The look of a man checking a box. He had reclassified me somewhere in the last eleven minutes, filed me under a category that required no further attention, and now he was finished.

He put his hand at the small of Katalina's back and turned toward the entrance. They walked up the steps together. Unhurried. His hand steady at her back. Her heels clicking their clean, punctuating rhythm.

They reached the top step.

A black town car turned into the curved entrance drive.

It moved slowly. It stopped.

The door opened.

The man who stepped out was old. White-haired. Immaculate in the way that only decades of absolute certainty can produce. He didn't scan the crowd. He didn't pause to assess the situation or take in the context of what he'd arrived to find.

His gaze went directly to me.

He walked across the pavement without acknowledging a single other person. The crowd parted for him the way crowds part for something they don't fully understand but instinctively recognize.

He knelt on the pavement beside me.

His hands — hands that had built this institution from nothing, that had shaken presidents' hands and signed legislation and held more things than I would ever know — cupped my face. Gently. Both palms against my bloodied cheeks.

They were trembling.

He looked at me and said nothing. Just looked. His eyes moved over my split lip, my scraped palm, the satchel I was still holding against my chest.

For a moment, the whole world was just that. His trembling hands. His eyes. The quiet between us that was nothing like the silence I had just felt — because this one was full.
