Chapter 3

Massimo signed the papers at 11:47 PM.

I know because his assistant mentioned it later. Four minutes. That's how long it took him to approve the quarterly budget reviews for every Carter-funded community program in the state.

He didn't read them. He was at the hospital. He'd been at the hospital for sixteen days straight, sleeping in the chair beside Camilla's bed, waiting for her to wake up.

So he signed.

A 40% cut to medical equipment maintenance. Across every facility. Including the one where Nana lived.

I didn't know that yet.

I was on my knees in the executive bathroom, scrubbing someone's vomit off the tile. My right hand kept slipping on the brush handle. I had to grip it with both hands now. The tremor was getting worse.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I ignored it. Finished the tile. Rinsed the brush. My reflection in the mirror showed a woman I barely recognized. Hollow cheeks. Gray undertone to my skin. Hair pulled back so tight it hurt.

I checked my phone in the stairwell.

A text from the hospital: *She's awake.*

I stared at the screen. Read it three times.

Camilla was awake.

Three years. Three years of machines breathing for her. Three years of Massimo sitting vigil. Three years of me scrubbing floors because he believed I put her there.

And now she was awake.

I sat down on the stairs. My legs just folded. I pressed my forehead against my knees and counted my breaths.

One. Two. Three.

She was awake. She would tell the truth. She would tell them I didn't do it. This would be over.

I let myself believe that for exactly thirty seconds.

Then I stood up. Pushed the cart back to the supply closet. Clocked out. Took the subway home.

I didn't hear from Massimo for three days.

---

When his assistant called, I was in the middle of mopping the lobby. Seventh floor. My shift didn't end for another two hours.

"Mr. Carter needs to see you. Now."

I left the mop in the bucket. Took the elevator up. Walked into his office with my uniform still damp and smelling like bleach.

Massimo stood by the window. He looked thinner. Older. Like someone had carved pieces out of him and forgotten to fill them back in.

"She's awake," he said without turning around.

"I heard."

"She can't see."

I went very still.

He turned. His eyes were red-rimmed. "The accident. The coma. She's blind now. Permanently."

I didn't say anything. There was nothing to say. My hands hung at my sides. The right one trembled.

"We ran compatibility tests," Massimo continued. His voice was flat. Factual. "You're a corneal match."

The floor dropped out from under me.

"No," I said.

He crossed the room. Stopped three feet away. Close enough that I could see the stubble on his jaw, the exhaustion carved into every line of his face.

"You're going to donate your cornea," he said quietly. "You're going to give her back what you took."

"I didn't take anything. I didn't—"

"The surgery is scheduled for next week. Tuesday. 6 AM. Mount Sinai."

My breath came short. "You can't make me do this."

"I can pull your grandmother's funding within the hour." He said it like he was reading a grocery list. "Nana Perry. Cardiac monitoring. Medications. Round-the-clock care. Eighteen thousand a month. All Carter money. All revocable."

My vision blurred at the edges.

"If I do this," I whispered, "you leave her funding alone?"

Massimo's jaw tightened. Something flickered across his face. Then it was gone.

"Do it," he said, "and I'll consider your debt partially paid."

Partially.

I looked at him. This man I used to love. This man who used to hold me like I was something precious. This man who was asking me to give up part of my body for a woman who destroyed my life.

I thought about Nana. Her smile. Her pecan pie. The botanical garden on Sunday mornings.

I thought about the notebook in my kitchen drawer. *Day 47. I can't button my shirts anymore. I use safety pins.*

I thought about how much time I had left. Less than a year now. Maybe less than six months.

What did I need my eyes for? I'd be dead before the loss mattered.

"Where do I sign?" I asked.

Massimo's throat worked. He turned. Picked up a folder from his desk. Set it in my hands.

I opened it. Consent forms. Legal waivers. Pages and pages of text I didn't read.

I signed every line.

My right hand shook so badly I had to steady it with my left. The signature looked like a child's. But it was legible enough.

I closed the folder. Set it on his desk.

"Tuesday," Massimo said. "6 AM. Don't be late."

I walked out. Down the hall. Past my old office where someone else sat at my desk. Into the elevator. The doors closed.

I pressed my hands flat against the wall and stared at my reflection in the polished metal.

One eye would go dark. Then the other, eventually, when the ALS took everything.

But Nana would be safe.

That was all that mattered.

I went back to the seventh floor. Picked up my mop. Finished my shift.

That night, I opened my notebook.

*Day 51. He's taking my eyes next week. I said yes.*

I wrote three more lines. Then I closed the book and put it away.

Five days until surgery.

I could survive five more days.
