My Fiancé Fixed My Fight—So I Signed With His Mafia Rival Novel Cover

My Fiancé Fixed My Fight—So I Signed With His Mafia Rival

Dean wanted me to throw the championship, then used a fake drug test to bury me when I won. I ended our engagement on camera and signed with Luca Moretti—the feared mafia heir behind Crown's rival promotion—because he gave me what Dean never would: control of my own career. Now Dean threatens my brother, leaks private photos, and tries to scare me from the cage. Luca keeps me under his roof without crossing a line I haven't chosen. But if his family helped build Dean's empire, trusting him could be deadlier than fighting the man who tried to own my loss.

Chapter 4

The private elevator opened directly into the penthouse with a soft, mechanical chime.

Polished slate floors stretched toward floor-to-ceiling glass that overlooked the gray sprawl of Manhattan. The space was sleek, cold, and vast, stripped of clutter. It felt less like a home and more like a high-altitude bunker.

I stopped right at the threshold of the foyer, keeping my gym duffel slung over my shoulder.

Luca took two steps onto the dark stone, then paused when he realized I hadn't moved. He turned, his coat open, hands resting casually in his trouser pockets.

"You're not coming in?" he asked.

"Before this bag touches your floor, we establish the boundaries," I said.

He didn't smirk, and he didn't sigh. He simply stood there, waiting.

"First," I said, holding his gaze, "my bedroom door stays unlocked. I don't get locked in, nobody traps me, and you don't turn a handle without knocking first. Second, my training is entirely mine. I pick my hours, my roadwork, my sparring, and my recovery. You don't manage my schedule. And third, any touch requires permission. You don't steer my elbow, you don't tap my shoulder, and you don't enter my personal space without asking. Understood?"

Dean had spent five years treating my body like company property. He had touched my waist to steer me through press scrums, grabbed my neck to force my focus during weight cuts, and dictated every minute I spent awake. I would rather sleep on a subway grating than let another man assume ownership over an inch of my skin.

Luca reached into his pocket.

He didn't argue. He didn't offer a patronizing disclaimer about how much he was spending to keep my family safe.

He stepped forward, stopped two feet away, and held out his hand. In his open palm sat a heavy brass ring holding three keys and a matte-black biometric fob.

"Take them," Luca said.

I looked at the keys, then at his face. "What's the exchange?"

"There isn't one," he said, his voice quiet and even. "The master fob overrides every door in the unit, including the elevator. You can lock yourself in, or you can walk out to the street whenever you decide you're done. No strings. No curfew."

He reached out, waiting until I extended my hand before dropping the cold metal into my palm. His skin didn't graze mine once.

"Guest suite is down the hall on the left," he added, turning toward the kitchen. "Make yourself at home."

I closed my fingers around the keys. They felt surprisingly heavy.

Three hours later, the illusion of peace shattered.

I was sitting at the marble kitchen island, an untouched bowl of oatmeal cooling in front of me, when my phone began to vibrate violently against the counter. Notifications poured in so fast the lock screen blurred into a continuous cascade of alerts.

Twitter. Instagram. MMA Junkie. Combat Digest.

My stomach dropped. I tapped the first headline that popped up on my screen.

*LEAKED: UNSEEN FOOTAGE SHOWS FORMER CONTENDER EVA VANCE IN CRITICAL POST-FIGHT STATE.*

My breath caught in my throat.

Below the bold header was a high-resolution photo. It had been taken from an angle slightly above a hotel bed. In the picture, I was half-naked, stripped to a pair of black compression shorts and a sports bra, my torso strapped in heavy bags of crushed ice and medical tape.

My skin looked pasty, almost gray. My eyes were half-lidded, glazed with the dull, lifeless haze of sheer physical exhaustion and prescription anti-inflammatories. My left shoulder and ribs were mottled with dark, sickening purple bruises.

The caption beneath the post, attributed to an anonymous camp insider, was venomous:

*Eva Vance behind closed doors. The title contender didn't just stumble into a failed test. For over a year, she's depended on heavy chemical cocktails to survive basic camps. When the painkillers stopped masking the damage, she turned to black-market stimulants. A tragedy waiting to happen.*

The blood rushed into my ears, loud and deafening.

I remembered that night. It was eight months ago in Las Vegas, after I took five brutal rounds against Sarah Kelly to earn my title shot. I had torn two intercostal muscles in my ribs during the third round and fought ten more minutes spitting blood. Dean had taken that photo while I lay on the bed shivering, telling me he was documenting the bruising for the athletic commission doctor.

He hadn't been documenting an injury. He had been stocking ammunition.

"What is it?"

Luca's voice broke through the ringing in my ears. He walked out of his office down the corridor, tablet in hand. He had already seen it.

"Dean," I choked out, my fingers trembling with a lethal mixture of humiliation and rage. "He leaked my recovery photos. He's framing my torn rib rehab as a drug-induced crash."

Luca looked at my screen, his jaw setting hard. "Give me five minutes. My legal team can issue emergency cease-and-desist orders to every outlet running the image, and my digital team can choke the syndication across major platforms before it hits the evening news."

The relief flashed through me, swift and intoxicating.

*Let him handle it.*

It would be so easy. Luca had millions, an army of ruthless corporate lawyers, and enough media clout to bury the story six feet under before dinner. All I had to do was nod, step back, and let the powerful man solve my problem.

I opened my mouth to say yes.

Then my gaze fell back on the photo of myself on the bed. Small. Helpless. Stripped bare while a man stood over me with a camera, deciding what I was worth.

If Luca buried the story, the narrative belonged to him. The public would whisper that Moretti bought silence for his dirty fighter. Dean would win the war of whispers.

"No," I said, my voice shaking before it hardened.

Luca paused, his dark eyes narrowing slightly. "Eva, by tomorrow morning, this will be the lead on every sports podcast in the country. Let my people kill it."

"If you kill it, it looks like a cover-up," I said, standing up from the stool. "Dean wants me hiding under your desk. He wants the world to believe I'm a broken addict who needs a man to speak for her."

I grabbed my phone off the counter and set it against a heavy ceramic pitcher on the island, angling the front-facing camera directly toward me.

"What are you doing?" Luca asked.

"Taking back my own story," I said.

I didn't fix my hair. I didn't wash off the faint shadow of weariness around my eyes. I stood under the stark, bright overhead lights of the kitchen, wearing my faded black gym tank top, and tapped the button to go live.

Within thirty seconds, the viewer count spiked from a few hundred to over ten thousand. Comments flooded the bottom of the screen in a frantic, unreadable blur.

*Is the photo real?*

*Tell us about the drugs!*

*Dean was right about you!*

I looked straight into the lens, steadying my breath.

"Most of you have seen the photo posted an hour ago," I said, my voice cutting through the silence of the room. "The picture is real. The story attached to it is a lie."

I lifted the hem of my tank top just enough to expose my lower left rib cage. A faint, jagged white surgical mark traced the contour of the bone.

"That photo was taken on November fourteenth at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas," I said evenly. "Three hours after I defeated Sarah Kelly. I suffered a grade-three tear of my intercostal muscles and two fractured ribs in the third round. The woman in that picture wasn't crashing from an overdose. She was lying in ice because breathing felt like broken glass."

The comments slowed down, shifting as thousands watched.

"The man who took that photo was Dean," I continued, staring unblinkingly at the screen. "He took it while promising to call the ringside physician. Instead, he kept it in his pocket until I refused to throw a world championship fight for his Queens bookmakers."

I took a slow breath, letting the words settle.

"Dean has no authority to represent me. He does not manage my career, he does not speak on my health, and he holds zero stake in my future. I knocked out Roxanne Miller in two rounds, clean. My B-sample was tampered with, and the truth will come out in the hearing. If Dean wants to fight me, he can do it in a court of law. But he will never put words in my mouth again."

I reached forward and ended the broadcast.

The silence returned to the penthouse, thick and heavy. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, but my hands were completely steady.

I looked up.

Luca was still standing near the entrance of the kitchen. He hadn't stepped into the frame. He hadn't prompted me, corrected me, or gestured for me to wrap it up. He had simply stood in the shadows, an immovable shield at my back, waiting for me to finish on my own terms.

For the first time in six years, someone had protected me without stealing my voice in the process.

My phone chimed with an email notification.

I looked down. It was an urgent memo from the marketing director of VaporFit, the training apparel brand that had prepared to void my endorsement contract this morning.

*Eva,* the email read, *we saw the live statement. The press is already pressing Dean for timestamps on the medical records. Termination is on hold pending Thursday's commission findings.*

A breath rushed out of my lungs. The court of public opinion hadn't done a complete reversal, but the tide had stopped rising. The cracks were showing in Dean's facade.

Then the screen flashed again.

A text message from an unregistered number pushed the email aside.

I tapped the screen.

It was a single sentence from Dean:

*Next time, I post Mateo.*
