Chapter 3

I couldn't sleep. The sedative—no, the drug—sat untouched on my nightstand, a small white reminder of Maddox's betrayal. Twenty-four hours had passed since I'd discovered the truth about my "vitamins," and clarity had never felt so painful.

The morning light filtered through my bedroom curtains as I paced the apartment. Maddox had left for "work" hours ago, but I knew better now. He was probably with Isabela, playing the role of devoted husband while I remained his secret shame.

My gaze landed on his home office door. In eight years, I'd never dared enter without permission. It was his sanctuary, his private space—the one place in our shared apartment where I wasn't welcome.

"Today," I whispered to myself, "everything changes."

I pushed open the door, heart hammering against my ribs. The room smelled of his cologne and leather-bound books. Everything was meticulously organized—Maddox despised disorder. His mahogany desk dominated the space, its drawers all locked except one.

I'd seen him check that drawer countless times, always when he thought I was asleep. Always with that small key he kept on his keychain.

My hands trembled as I retrieved a letter opener from the kitchen. The silver blade caught the light as I knelt before the desk, sliding it into the crack between the drawer and frame.

"Please," I murmured, applying pressure. "Please work."

The wood groaned in protest, but I didn't stop. Eight years of lies had given me strength I never knew I possessed. The drawer gave way suddenly, revealing its contents—and a false bottom.

My breath caught. I'd been right.

I pried up the thin panel, and a stack of envelopes spilled out. Dozens of them, all addressed to me in the same elegant handwriting. All postmarked from Seattle.

My grandfather's handwriting.

I sank to the floor, clutching the letters to my chest as the first one slipped from its envelope.

"My dearest Winter," it began. "Another year has passed without word from you. I cannot express how deeply this pains me..."

Tears blurred my vision as I read letter after letter, each more desperate than the last.

"I've enclosed my attorney's contact information. The Collins fortune is yours by right..."

"I've established a trust in your name..."

"Your father's death was not your fault. Please, child, let me help you..."

"I'm not getting younger, Winter. Before it's too late..."

Each letter was a knife to my heart. Five years of correspondence, carefully hidden away while Maddox assured me I had no family left who cared.

"No wonder he needed to keep me sedated," I whispered, wiping away tears. "He wasn't just controlling me—he was stealing my inheritance."

I read until my eyes burned and my throat ached from crying. Each letter was a glimpse into what might have been—a life with family support, financial independence, choices.

Instead, Maddox had created a prisoner who didn't know she was locked in a cage.

---

Night fell as I finished the last letter. I carefully arranged them in chronological order, my hands steady now where they had been shaking before. The truth had transformed my grief into something harder, colder.

I heard the apartment door open just after midnight. Maddox's footsteps were slightly uneven—he'd been drinking. The scent of champagne and Isabela's distinctive perfume wafted down the hallway.

"Winter?" he called softly, checking the living room before heading toward our bedroom.

I slipped into bed, arranging my body in the limp posture he'd expect from someone sedated. My breathing slowed deliberately as I closed my eyes.

The bedroom door creaked open. Through barely-open eyelids, I watched him approach the bed. He bent down, his fingers pressing against my neck to check my pulse.

"Still asleep," he murmured, satisfied. "Perfect."

He moved to the bathroom, splashing water on his face before returning to change into silk pajamas. I kept my breathing deep and even as he settled into the armchair beside the bed.

His phone vibrated, and he quickly answered it.

"Yes, Marcus," he said quietly. "No, she doesn't suspect anything."

A pause as he listened.

"The board meeting is set for Tuesday. Isabela's father will be there... Yes, I have everything under control."

Another pause.

"Of course I do. I've got the bank account and the beauty—what more could a man want?"

He chuckled softly. "Winter's completely docile. The pills work perfectly. She'll never leave, and she'll never know what I've done."

My fingers curled into fists beneath the sheets as rage burned through me. But I didn't move. Not yet.

"Tomorrow," I thought to myself as Maddox continued his call, oblivious to the fact that his perfect plan was beginning to unravel. "Tomorrow everything changes."
