Chapter 1

My former fiancé's sister-in-law fell ill, and he insisted on ending our engagement.

"Blair Meyer and her daughter Thalia have no one else now that she's ill. I can't just ignore them."

I didn't stop him; I agreed right away.

In a previous lifetime, I had coerced him into marrying me by threatening his family's business and leveraging my pregnancy. It ended in tragedy—Blair couldn't bear the pain and abandonment and chose to end her life on our wedding day. From then on, Skyler Castillo hated me with all his might.

He conspired with my enemies and, within six months, destroyed my parents' company, driving them to desperation where they took their own lives. He locked me away in a cellar, tormenting me daily until he eventually caused my death, costing two lives.

This time, I chose to let go.

The day he announced our breakup, I went to the clinic, terminated the pregnancy, and applied for a study opportunity in the United States.

"Alright, I agree to break up."

Skyler seemed surprised by my quick agreement but also relieved.

"Thank you, Genevieve, for understanding."

"Blair needs me now. Once she's stable, we can marry. I'll make it up to you with a grand wedding."

He spoke earnestly, as though I should be grateful for his promise. Yet, all I felt was a profound chill in my heart.

"Let's keep our breakup a secret for now. It'll be complicated to explain when I eventually get married."

I looked at the man I had loved for years, my lips curling in a bitter smile. Though both our families are well-known, they're not on the same level. For years, if my father hadn't discreetly supported his family, they would never have made it into high society. He was afraid of my parents finding out.

Lost in thought, Skyler suddenly pulled me out of his car.

"It's raining, and Blair's scared. I need to be with her. Dropping you off will take too long. You can walk down from here."

I stumbled as I tried to regain my balance.

"But here..."

Before I could finish, Skyler had already walked away without looking back. The rain pelted down, chilling me to the bone.

I walked the winding path for what felt like ages before finally encountering a kind stranger who helped me down the hill. By the time I got home, I was so exhausted I could barely stand.

Drenched by the rain, I caught a high fever that night, feeling utterly disoriented. After taking some medication, I intended to sleep when I received a message from my best friend.

She sent me a screenshot of Skyler's latest Twitter update. In the photo, Blair was nestled in Skyler's arms, the two of them looking nauseatingly sweet. The caption read: "I made the wrong choice before. Destiny allows me to keep you by my side now."

Even though I had already decided to let go, reading those words felt like my heart was being devoured by a thousand ants, an unbearable pain.

My best friend messaged me, indignant on my behalf.

"Genevieve, how can Skyler do this? How can he discuss marriage with you while cozying up with another woman?!"

I managed a bitter smile and replied with a simple "It's okay," before saving the photo and turning off my phone.

I don't know how I eventually fell asleep, only to be woken in the middle of the night by the sound of Skyler returning home.

Seeing me emerge from the bedroom, he seemed surprised that I was still awake. His voice carried annoyance:

"Waiting to accuse me again? Genevieve, did you forget what we talked about today?!"

He tugged at his tie as he moved closer. The smell of alcohol and a hint of sweet perfume clung to him.

Recalling his Twitter post, I took a deep breath, trying to steady my emotions.

"Is what you posted true? Did you never really want to be with me?"

Skyler chuckled coldly. "Does it matter if it was voluntary?"

He gazed at me impatiently, his brows furrowing deeply.

"You were missing for two days, and who knows what happened during that time? If I hadn't felt sorry for you, who else would have agreed to be with you?!"

"Incredible. Instead of being grateful, you're just stirring up trouble out of jealousy every day!"

His blunt words hit me like a punch to the gut, leaving me breathless from the pain.

He had entered my life, promising to protect, love, and cherish me. I believed him and agreed to be with him. But in less than five years, he had changed; in my past life, he didn't hesitate to cause my death for Blair.

I struggled to hold back my tears, my voice trembling as I spoke:

"If you didn't love me, you could have just told me. Why deceive me?"

Skyler's brows furrowed even more tightly. He seemed on the verge of saying something but held back, instead changing the subject:

"Enough! It's all in the past. Why bring it up again? I've already said I'll marry you later, what more do you want?!"

"But there's one thing I have to make clear."

"I'll take care of Blair for the rest of her life."

"When she's gone, I'll treat her child as my own."

"I don't plan to have more kids. If you can accept that, then we'll get married."

His words pierced my already battered heart, each one a sharp arrow. The pain overwhelmed me, leaving me gasping for breath as I crouched down, unable to contain it.

"Skyler, can you take me to the hospital? I have a fever. I'm feeling really unwell."

Hoping to appeal to whatever little sympathy he might have left for me, I was instead met with his dismissive mockery.

"It's just a fever. You won't die from it."

"You need to prepare a room. Blair and her daughter are moving in tomorrow!"

With that, he went into his study, closing the door with a thud that resonated painfully in my chest.

The encrypted message arrived on the eve of my father's fifth death anniversary. I was sitting alone in my private study, a glass of untouched wine beside me, when my secure tablet chimed with an incoming transmission. My heart stuttered—that particular tone belonged to my father's old military communication network, a channel I thought had been shut down years ago. My fingers trembled as I entered the authentication codes. The message was brief, containing only a single photograph and a few lines of text. The image showed classified documents with my father's distinctive handwriting in the margins—the same documents that had "proven" his treason. But something was wrong. The attached handwriting analysis clearly showed the forgery. "General Nelson's genuine signature exhibits a characteristic pressure variation that these documents lack. The forgery is sophisticated but detectable under spectral analysis." The message was signed simply: "A friend who knew the truth." I pressed my palm against my mouth, stifling a gasp.

The subway was a furnace. I stood in the car with a canvas tote cutting into my shoulder — fresh pasta, a bottle of Barolo, the good kind of olive oil — and told myself the sweat on the back of my neck was just the July heat. Ninety-four degrees outside. The kind of day that turns Manhattan into a slow-cooked argument. Jericho's birthday. I'd been planning it for three weeks. The pasta was from that little shop on Arthur Avenue he mentioned once, offhand, six months ago. I wrote it down. I always wrote things down. The wine I'd researched for two hours on a Tuesday night after he fell asleep, cross-referencing vintage years with a food pairing guide I bookmarked on my phone.
