Chapter 4

I took the subway uptown.

The fluorescent lights in the train car hummed and flickered. It was past eight, and the car was nearly empty. I caught my reflection in the dark subway window. My face looked pale, almost hollow. A thin crust of dried blood clung to the collar of my shirt.

Inside my coat pocket, my fingers held the silk pouch tight. The broken jade shards shifted against each other with every rattle of the train tracks. They felt sharp through the thin fabric.

I got off at 77th Street and walked into the cold wind of the Upper East Side. The doorman at Elisabeth Griffin’s building didn't say a word. He looked at the dried blood on my neck, nodded once, and held open the heavy glass door. He had known me for seven years, but tonight he looked right through me.

The elevator rose in total silence.

Elisabeth opened the door herself. She wore a simple gray wool dress, her silver hair pinned into a neat, smooth twist. She was sixty, but her posture was straight as an iron rod. She took one look at my face, then down at the red stain on my shirt.

Her jaw set tight. She didn't ask what happened. She simply stepped aside.

"Come inside, Indie," she said.

Her penthouse was vast, immaculate, and quiet. There was no music. No television. Only the soft ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner. The air smelled of dried lavender and old books.

We walked into the living room. She pointed to the sofa, but I chose the stiff armchair across from her.

I set the silk pouch on the glass coffee table between us.

It made a soft, dull clatter. Inside, the green fragments rubbed together like gravel.

Elisabeth looked down at the pouch. Her gray eyes were sharp, but there was a heavy shadow behind them. She sat back, folded her hands in her lap, and waited.

My voice didn't shake when I opened my mouth. It came out flat and dry, like dead leaves.

"I lost," I said.

The grandfather clock ticked twice.

"He’s sleeping with Scottie Moreno," I said. "He told me we would have an open marriage. He told me to accept it because I have nowhere else to go. Today, he made me go to the Four Seasons to remake their bed. Scottie ripped this off my neck and smashed it on the floor."

I pushed the pouch an inch closer to her side of the table.

"You were right, Elisabeth," I whispered. "He is his father. Down to the bone."

Elisabeth didn't blink. She went completely still. It was the terrible stillness of someone who had heard this exact speech before. Thirty years ago, another Griffin man had broken her the same way. She knew every cut. She knew every bruise before it even turned purple.

Slowly, she leaned forward. She pulled open the small drawer in the side table next to her chair.

She took out a thick, unmarked white envelope.

She set it on the glass table, right next to my bag of broken jade.

"Everything is inside," Elisabeth said. Her voice was steady, but lower than usual. "A new passport. A one-way ticket to Charles de Gaulle on the midnight flight. And a debit card. There is enough money in that account to keep you alive for five years without asking a single soul for help."

I looked at the white envelope. The edges were clean and crisp.

"You had this ready," I said.

"I bought the ticket three weeks ago," she replied. She didn't look away. "I’ve watched him for six months, Indie. I saw how he looked at you. The way he stopped listening when you spoke. My husband did that in our third year of marriage. Once a man decides you are a permanent piece of furniture, he will never see you as human again."

She paused. Her hands tightened slightly in her lap, her knuckles turning white.

"I didn't want to be right," she said quietly.

Those five words felt heavier than anything Damon had said to me all day.

We sat in the quiet room. The silence stretched between us like a long, dark bridge.

She was the woman who had stayed. She had swallowed her pride, looked the other way, and let the Griffin name rot her from the inside out. Now she lived alone in a museum of empty rooms, surrounded by money that couldn't keep her warm.

And I was the woman who was leaving.

I reached out. My fingers touched the paper envelope. It felt cool and heavy in my hand.

I slid it into the inner pocket of my coat, right against my ribs. Then I picked up the silk pouch of shattered jade and dropped it into my side pocket.

I stood up. My knees felt stiff, but my legs didn't tremble.

Elisabeth didn't stand. She stayed in her chair, watching me with her cold, tired eyes.

I walked across the soft rug toward the foyer. When my hand touched the brass handle of the front door, I stopped.

I turned around.

Elisabeth was still watching me from across the room. Her face was half-cast in the dim lamplight. She looked small against the massive windows behind her, with all of Manhattan glittering at her back.

No words passed between us. We didn't say goodbye. We didn't wish each other luck.

I looked at her for five long seconds.

Then I nodded once.

She nodded back.

I pulled the door open, stepped out into the hallway, and let the latch click shut behind me.
