Chapter 3

The scent of dark roast espresso and rain-slicked pavement drifted through the open terrace doors of the Bennett penthouse. For the first time in my life, the quiet didn’t feel like a prelude to a storm. It felt like armor.

Malachi stood by the marble kitchen island, his broad back to me as he poured two cups of coffee. He didn’t wear the sickly stoop the media loved to photograph; his posture was a steel rod, his movements fluid and precise. He slid a mug toward me just as the private elevator chimed, signaling the arrival of my fiercely loyal family attorney, Oliver Sterling.

Oliver stepped into the foyer, shaking the rain from his bespoke umbrella. He didn't bother with pleasantries. He dropped a thick manila folder onto the marble counter with a heavy, satisfying thud.

"Trouble in paradise," Oliver announced, a predatory gleam in his sharp gray eyes. "Your former fiancé is learning that playing the savior comes with a hefty price tag."

I wrapped my hands around the warm ceramic of my mug. "Define hefty."

"Maya Silva's innocent damsel routine expired the moment she got his ring on her finger," Oliver said, sliding a stack of financial summaries across the island. "She’s maxed out three of his black cards in a fortnight. Hermes, Cartier, a fleet of private cars. She’s bleeding him dry. And Cason? He’s miserable. My sources at Grant Investments say he’s snapping at his board, missing deadlines, and quietly asking mutual friends how you managed to keep his life running so effortlessly."

I stared at the staggering credit card bills. Cason had traded a lifelong partnership for a parasite, all to stroke his own ego. The phantom sting of his betrayal didn't burn anymore; it just left a cold, clinical disgust in the back of my throat.

"That’s not why you’re here, Oliver," I murmured, noting the second item he held back.

Oliver’s smirk deepened. He withdrew a thick, vulgar envelope from his breast pocket. It was heavy, stamped with ostentatious gold foil. "Delivered to the Walker estate this morning, forwarded directly to me. She wants you to see her victory."

I broke the wax seal. The embossed cardstock announced the lavish wedding reception of Mr. and Mrs. Cason Grant at the Plaza Hotel. It was a taunt. A desperate, glittering provocation from a woman terrified that her stolen crown was slipping.

Malachi leaned against the counter, his dark eyes dropping to the invitation. He didn't offer empty platitudes. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers briefly brushing my knuckles—an anchor in the rising tide. "What do you need, Sydney?"

I didn't look away from the gold lettering. The ice Malachi had helped thaw in my chest suddenly reformed into a sharpened blade.

"She is wearing my dress," I said, my voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm register. "The custom ivory silk. I paid for it from my personal trust. And the headpiece she’s boasting about in the tabloids? That’s the Walker million-dollar diamond tiara. It was in Cason’s vault for safekeeping before the split."

Oliver leaned forward, resting his forearms on the marble. "Technically, legally, both items remain your exclusive property. We could send a cease and desist."

"No." I looked up, meeting Oliver’s gaze. "We don't send a letter. We repossess them. Tonight. In front of every camera in New York."

Malachi’s lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile. He pressed a soft kiss to my temple, the warmth of his mouth a stark contrast to the ice in my veins. "Burn it down, Mrs. Bennett," he whispered, stepping back to let me wage my war.

Four hours later, the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a suffocating sea of flashbulbs and champagne flutes. Standing in the shadows of the velvet-draped VIP mezzanine, Oliver and I looked down at the circus below.

Maya Silva was holding court. She paraded across the checkerboard marble floor, basking in the blinding flashes of the paparazzi. The ivory silk of my custom gown clung to her frame, the bodice slightly puckered—a glaring reminder that she lacked my tailor, my posture, and my grace. But it was the heirloom tiara resting heavily in her dark hair that made my jaw lock. The diamonds caught the chandelier light, throwing fractured rainbows across the room. She was practically vibrating with smug entitlement.

Beside her, Cason looked like a ghost haunting his own life. His tuxedo was immaculate, but his shoulders were rigid, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked violently in his cheek. When Maya looped her arm through his, clinging to him like a gilded shackle, he subtly flinched. His hollow eyes scanned the crowd, searching the sea of elite faces for the one woman who belonged by his side.

He wouldn't find me down there.

"The press is in position," Oliver murmured, checking his watch. His team of private security and legal aides were already flanking the ballroom's gilded doors. "Give the word, Sydney."

I watched Maya throw her head back in a practiced, breathless laugh, her fingers tracing the diamonds that belonged to my grandmother.

"Take it back," I commanded, the words slipping out smooth and cold. "All of it."
