Chapter 4

The text came at two in the morning.

I was awake. I'd been awake for hours, sitting in my home office with the lights off, watching the city glow through floor-to-ceiling windows. Manhattan never slept. Neither did I.

Diana's message lit up my phone: *You need to see this.*

A link. I clicked it.

Caden's face filled my screen. He sat in what looked like a hospital room—sterile white walls, fluorescent lighting, the beep of monitors in the background. Estella lay in a bed beside him, pale and fragile in a hospital gown. Her hand rested in his. An IV line ran from her arm to a bag of clear fluid.

The view counter climbed as I watched. Forty thousand. Fifty thousand. Sixty.

"I never wanted to do this publicly," Caden said to the camera. His voice cracked. "But I don't have a choice anymore. People need to know the truth about Vivienne Montgomery."

Estella's eyes fluttered. She turned her head toward him with visible effort. The performance was good. I had to give her that.

"She destroyed me for loving someone who's dying," Caden continued. "Estella has weeks left. Maybe days. And Vivienne took everything—my company, my home, my ability to pay for Estella's care—because she couldn't handle that I chose compassion over a wedding date."

The comments section scrolled past in a blur. *This is heartbreaking.* *What kind of person does this?* *Vivienne Montgomery is a monster.*

I set the phone down. Picked up my coffee. It had gone cold an hour ago. I drank it anyway.

By morning, the video had four million views.

---

I arrived at Montgomery Holdings at seven a.m. The lobby was already full of reporters. Cameras. Microphones shoved toward my face as I walked from the car to the elevator.

"Ms. Montgomery, how do you respond to allegations that you—"

"Is it true you cut off funding for a terminally ill woman's—"

"Do you have any comment on the #JusticeForEstella movement?"

I didn't stop walking. My security team formed a wall around me. The elevator doors closed on a dozen shouted questions.

Diana met me on the executive floor. She handed me a tablet without preamble. "Trending on Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. The story hit morning news segments on three networks. Your office voicemail is full. So is mine."

I scrolled through the tablet. Screenshots of Caden's video. Think pieces about wealth and cruelty. A petition demanding I be removed from the Forbes list. It had sixty thousand signatures.

"They're good," I said quietly.

"They're desperate," Diana corrected. "And desperation makes people sloppy."

I looked up at her. "You found something."

"Our investigative team pulled Estella's phone records from the past six months. She made seventeen calls to a number registered to Raymond Holt. He's a black-market medical document forger. Previously convicted. Currently operating out of Newark."

I felt something shift in my chest. Not quite relief. Not quite satisfaction. Something colder.

"Can you prove it?"

"We recovered text messages. Payment receipts. She paid him twelve thousand dollars for fabricated hospital records and a forged oncologist's signature." Diana's smile was razor-sharp. "And she was stupid enough to use Venmo."

I set the tablet down. "Get me her doctor's real name."

"Already have it. Dr. Sarah Chen at Mount Sinai. She's willing to provide a statement confirming Estella Munoz has never been her patient and has no cancer diagnosis on file."

I stood. Straightened my jacket. "Schedule a press conference for this afternoon."

"Vivienne." Diana's voice stopped me. "They're doing another livestream tonight. Eight p.m. They're calling it Estella's 'final message to the world.'"

I looked at her. "Then I'll join them."

Diana blinked. "You want to go on their livestream?"

"I want two million people to watch me destroy them in real time," I said. "Make it happen."

---

The rest of the day moved in fragments.

Legal briefs. Conference calls. Emails from board members offering support or distance depending on their appetite for controversy. I answered none of them.

At six p.m., I went home. Showered. Changed into a black silk blouse and tailored trousers. I sat at my desk and opened my laptop.

Diana sent the access link at seven fifty-eight.

At eight p.m., I clicked join.

Caden's face appeared on screen. Then Estella's. She looked worse than this morning—makeup smudged, eyes red, breathing shallow. The viewer count climbed. Five hundred thousand. Eight hundred thousand. One million.

"Thank you all for being here," Caden said. His voice was hoarse. "Estella wanted to say a few words before—before it's too late."

Estella leaned toward the camera. A single tear rolled down her cheek. "I just want people to know that love is real. And that some people—"

I unmuted my microphone.

"Hello, Caden," I said.

The screen froze. Caden's face went white. Estella's eyes went wide.

The comment section exploded.

"I thought I'd join you," I continued. My voice was calm. Even. "Since we're all being so honest tonight."

"Vivienne, you have no right to—" Caden started.

"I have every right." I held up a document to my camera. "This is a signed statement from Dr. Sarah Chen at Mount Sinai Hospital. It confirms that Estella Munoz has never been her patient. That no cancer diagnosis exists. That every medical document Estella provided was fabricated."

Silence.

"I also have screenshots of text messages between Estella and Raymond Holt, a convicted medical document forger. Payment receipts. Venmo transactions. All of it."

I looked directly into the camera. Two million people looked back.

"Estella Munoz is not dying," I said. "She's lying."

The comment section became a wall of shock and rage.

Caden's mouth opened. Nothing came out.

Estella lunged for the phone. The screen went black.

But it was too late.

Two million people had already seen enough.
