Chapter 1

I sat alone in my dressing suite, the ivory silk of my custom Vera Wang gown cascading around me like liquid moonlight. My reflection stared back from the antique mirror – composed, elegant, and utterly unaware of the chaos about to unfold. The diamond tiara nestled in my dark hair caught the light with every small movement, winking like a secret I'd soon wish I'd kept.

My hands were steady as I reached for the champagne flute on the vanity. I took a measured sip, letting the bubbles dance on my tongue. Three hundred guests were seated in the grand ballroom downstairs, waiting for the bride. Three hundred people who had no idea they were about to witness something far more memorable than a wedding.

The door opened with a soft click, and Diana Cho stepped inside. My chief legal counsel and closest confidante looked like she'd seen a ghost. Her normally perfect posture was rigid with tension, and her dark eyes held a warning I couldn't quite decipher.

"Vivienne," she said, her voice carefully controlled. "There's been a situation in the ballroom. Caden is asking for you personally."

I set down my champagne flute with deliberate precision, straightening it against the edge of the tray. "A situation," I repeated. The word tasted bitter on my tongue.

"Yes," Diana confirmed, her gaze never leaving mine. "I think you should see for yourself."

I rose from the velvet chair, smoothing invisible wrinkles from my gown. "Then I'll see for myself."

The walk to the ballroom felt like marching to an execution. Each step echoed against the marble floors, a steady rhythm that matched the sudden pounding of my heart. I kept my spine straight, my chin lifted. Whatever was waiting for me, I would face it with the same composure I brought to every boardroom negotiation.

I pushed open the heavy doors and stepped into a nightmare.

Three hundred guests sat in stunned silence, their faces a blur of shock and curiosity. White roses adorned every surface, their pristine petals mocking the purity of the vows I would never speak. But it wasn't the flowers that froze the blood in my veins.

It was Estella Munoz, standing near the altar in my wedding gown.

My gown. The one I'd spent months designing with Vera Wang's team. The one that had been altered to fit my exact measurements. The one that was supposed to be mine alone on this day. She wore it like a trophy, her dark hair arranged in the same style I'd chosen for myself. And atop her head gleamed my diamond tiara – the one Caden had presented to me with promises of forever.

Caden stepped forward, his handsome face twisted with an emotion I couldn't name. Guilt? Defiance? He took my hands in his, and I felt nothing but the cold weight of his betrayal.

"Vivienne," he began, his voice low and pleading. "I need you to understand. Estella is dying. Terminal stomach cancer. The doctors say she has weeks, maybe days. Her final wish is to experience being a bride, just once."

He squeezed my hands, his eyes searching mine for the compassion he'd always taken for granted. "I'm asking you to postpone our ceremony. Just for today. You can understand that, can't you? You're strong enough to wait. You've always been so strong."

I stood perfectly still, letting his words wash over me like acid rain. Five seconds passed. Ten. The silence stretched until every guest in the room could feel it pressing against their skin.

Then I turned to the wedding coordinator, a woman named Patricia who had been hovering nearby with wide, panicked eyes.

"Patricia," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the ballroom. "I have some changes to the decor."

Caden's grip on my hands tightened. "Vivienne, what are you—"

"Black," I continued, ignoring him. "I want everything draped in black. Replace the white roses with funeral wreaths. Change the playlist to a funeral dirge. And project a black-and-white memorial-style photograph of Estella on the main screen."

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Patricia's face went white.

"Since she's so eager to die," I announced to the three hundred guests, my voice ringing with cold authority, "let's give her the send-off she deserves."

Caden lunged forward, his face contorted with fury. "Stop this! You can't do this! Vivienne, please!"

I turned to face him, unhurried and unshaken. His rage was nothing compared to the ice crystallizing in my chest. Slowly, deliberately, I removed my seven-carat emerald-cut engagement ring. The diamond caught the light one last time before I dropped it into a champagne flute on the nearest table with a soft clink.

Without another word, I walked out of the venue, my train whispering against the floor. Behind me, the string quartet played on, their confused notes fading as the doors closed.

In the sudden silence of the hallway, I could hear Estella's sobs echoing through the ballroom. Whether they were born of performance or genuine shock, I didn't care. She could have her moment in the spotlight.

She just wouldn't have me as her audience.
