Chapter 2

The moment Kathryne stepped onto the cool marble of the lobby, her phone began to vibrate violently.

Leo's name flashed across the screen.

She silenced it without a second glance, shoving the phone deep into her purse. All she wanted was to escape this place, to breathe air that wasn't tainted with his lies.

Her heels clicked a sharp, steady rhythm across the floor, each step a declaration.

She was almost at the grand entrance when a deep, resonant voice stopped her in her tracks.

"Ms. Sullivan."

The voice held an undeniable authority, a quiet power that made her freeze.

She turned.

He stepped out from behind a large marble column. Tall and imposing, he wore a perfectly tailored black suit that seemed to absorb the light around him.

His dark gray eyes, cold as a winter lake, assessed her. A faint, old scar cut through his left eyebrow, adding a hard edge to his handsome face.

It was Leo's uncle. Everett Carlisle.

Kathryne had only met him a handful of times at formal family gatherings. He was always a distant, formidable presence, an iceberg she had no desire to approach.

"Mr. Carlisle," she managed, her voice hoarse. She gave a stiff, polite nod.

Just then, Leo burst from the elevator hall, looking like a man possessed. His hair was a mess, and he was wearing nothing but a hotel bathrobe, his face a mask of pure panic.

"Kate! Kathryne! Listen to me, it was a misunderstanding!" he yelled, lunging to grab her arm.

Kathryne flinched back, a wave of disgust washing over her. She dodged his touch as if he were diseased.

Leo's desperate eyes then met Everett's icy gaze. He froze, the words dying in his throat. "Uncle... Everett..."

Everett didn't even look at his nephew. His attention was fixed solely on Kathryne's pale face.

"Are you alright?" he asked.

Kathryne took a deep breath, meeting his gaze directly. "Not really," she said, her voice clear and sharp. "But I will be. Mr. Carlisle, please inform your family that the engagement between myself and Leo is over."

Her words, crisp and resolute, cut through the quiet hum of the lobby. Nearby guests turned to stare.

All the blood drained from Leo's face. "No, Kate, you can't do this!" he pleaded. "I love you!"

"Love?" A bitter, humorless laugh escaped her lips. "Your love is too cheap, Leo. I can't afford it."

She ignored him, turning her attention back to the older Carlisle. "The evidence is in his email. I believe the Carlisle family needs a clean break."

With that, she turned to leave.

"Leo," Everett finally spoke. His voice was as cold as steel. "Go back to your room. Don't disgrace the family name any further."

Under Everett's crushing authority, Leo didn't dare utter another word. He could only watch, helpless, as Kathryne walked away.

Everett's long legs easily caught up to her. "I'll give you a ride."

Kathryne wanted to refuse, but when she looked into those deep, unreadable eyes, the words wouldn't come. All she wanted was to go home.

They walked out of the hotel, a black Bentley Mulsanne gliding silently to the curb to meet them.

The chauffeur opened the rear door. Everett placed a protective hand on the top of the doorframe as he guided her inside.

The door shut, sealing them in a world of quiet leather and polished wood.

Kathryne leaned her head back against the seat, the rigid control she'd maintained finally starting to crack.

She closed her eyes, but a single, hot tear escaped, tracing a path down her cold cheek. Not for Leo. For her own stupid, blind trust.

A clean, folded handkerchief appeared in her peripheral vision. Everett offered it to her without a word.

The car pulled smoothly into the flow of New York traffic, and Kathryne didn't notice the complex, intense way the man beside her watched her profile in the deepening twilight.
