Chapter 5

Gideon stared at the empty space by the door, his jaw rigid.

I snatched the crumpled crayon drawing from his slack grip. "Do not look for her. Do not ask about her."

"You hid my child," he said, his voice a low rasp.

"I protected my daughter," I corrected, smoothing the wrinkled paper against my thigh. "She does not know who you are. And she never will."

"I have a right to my own blood," Gideon argued.

"You forfeited your rights the second you told me to abort her," I said. "Sign the oversight agreement. You have forty-eight hours, or Hale Meridian tells the board to file Chapter Eleven."

He grabbed a pen from the glass table. He pressed the tip so hard against the signature line that the paper tore slightly.

"I am doing this for the twenty-four hundred people on my payroll," Gideon said, throwing the pen down. "You will never take this company from me."

I picked up the signed contract. "CrossTech is not a wedding ring, Gideon. Stop trying to drag everyone down just because you refuse to let go."

At nine o'clock the following morning, I pushed open the double doors of the CrossTech boardroom.

I bypassed the guest chairs and took the seat at the head of the mahogany table. A fresh brass nameplate sat centered on the polished wood: Vivienne Hale—42%.

Serena stood near the projector screen, gripping a stack of marketing reports.

"Board members," Serena announced, her tone sharp, "this woman is a disgruntled ex-wife. Her sudden reappearance is a security risk, not a financial strategy. We cannot allow personal vendettas to dictate corporate policy."

I ignored her. I pulled a thick folder from my briefcase and tossed it onto the center of the table.

"Six years ago, I liquidated my personal trust to fund your Series A," I said. "Those are the original wire transfers, alongside the forty-two-page funding plan I wrote myself. I kept you alive then, and I am keeping you alive now."

Director Miller, a man who had sat on the board since the beginning, picked up the bank statements. He adjusted his glasses, scanning the printed numbers.

"These are direct transfers from the Hale family trust," Miller said, passing the documents to the woman beside him. "This covers the entire first two years of operation."

"That is ancient history," Serena argued, her voice climbing in pitch. "It has nothing to do with our current valuation."

"It has everything to do with ownership," I corrected.

"She saved us from bankruptcy once," Miller said, looking at Gideon. "We support Hale Meridian's call for an independent audit."

Two other senior directors nodded in agreement, sliding their own copies of the financial reports into their briefcases.

Gideon leaned over the table, resting his weight on his knuckles. He glared at the three board members before turning his attention to me.

"I retain CEO authority," Gideon stated. "You sit on the board, but I run the floor."

"You have a thirty-day probation," I said, meeting his hard stare. "Every invoice over fifty thousand dollars crosses my desk. You will feel my pen on every single decision you make."

"My engineers are on the verge of a breakthrough," Gideon countered. "I cannot wait three days for you to approve a server upgrade."

"Your engineers are cashing paychecks while you default on your loans," I replied. "Thirty days. Prove you can manage a budget, or I replace you."

An hour later, I sat in the temporary executive office assigned to Hale Meridian.

My laptop chimed. An email from Owen appeared on the screen. He had accidentally forwarded a server request from Gideon's terminal. Gideon was already digging.

I opened the attached PDF. It was my official death certificate.

I zoomed in on the bottom right corner. The attending physician's signature belonged to Naomi. But the sharp, upward loop on the 'N' was missing. Naomi always dragged her pen on the first letter. This signature was flat.

My eyes flicked to the timestamp. 10:42 PM.

Twenty-three minutes after the car struck me. I was still bleeding on the operating table at ten-forty-two.

The office door swung inward. Serena marched across the carpet, slamming her palms flat on my desk.

"Get out of this building, Vivienne," Serena demanded. "You do not belong here."

"I own forty-two percent of this building," I said, leaning back in my chair. "You are just the PR director."

"Gideon is pulling the old hospital files now," Serena warned, leaning closer. "He knows you faked the crash. You are going to prison for fraud."

"Fraud?" I turned the laptop screen toward her. "Like forging a doctor's signature on a legal document?"

Serena froze.

Her right hand twitched, shooting across her body to cover her left wrist. She rubbed her thumb over a faded fabric hospital visitor band she still wore like a twisted souvenir.

"I have no idea what you are talking about," Serena muttered, taking a quick step back from the desk.

"The coroner signs off on the forms provided to him," I said. "Someone handed him a completed intake sheet. Someone who was at the hospital before I even made it out of surgery."

"You are bluffing," Serena said, her voice dropping. "You have no proof."

I picked up my phone and snapped a photo of the screen. I texted the image to Naomi.

I pressed a button on my keyboard, mirroring my phone screen to the large presentation monitor mounted on the glass wall behind me.

"Let us ask the doctor," I said.

My phone buzzed. Naomi's reply flashed in massive black text across the wall monitor.

I never signed this. That serial number is from a batch of scrapped ER intake forms.

Movement caught my eye. I looked past Serena.

Gideon stood in the hallway, positioned right outside the glass wall of my office. His eyes were locked on the giant monitor. He read the text message, his face draining of color.

He shifted his gaze through the glass, staring at Serena's left wrist.

Serena followed his line of sight. She gasped, dropping her hand and hiding her wrist behind her back.

My phone buzzed a second time. Another message from Naomi appeared on the wall monitor in glaring white light.

This certificate was requested as a blank form by Serena Vale 23 minutes after the crash.

Gideon shoved the glass door open.
