Chapter 2

The conference room smelled like expensive cologne and desperation. Mine.

I stood at the head of the table with my laptop open and my notes arranged in a neat stack that might as well have been written in a language I'd forgotten how to read. Across from me sat three representatives from Harlow & Cross, a luxury hotel chain with a marketing budget that could fund a small country. They wanted bold. They wanted innovative. They wanted someone who looked like she knew what the hell she was talking about.

I was not that person today.

"So as you can see," I said, gesturing to the slide behind me, "our approach centers on experiential storytelling that—" I stopped. The thread I'd been holding snapped. I looked down at my notes. The words blurred.

The woman in the center, Miranda Harlow herself, leaned back in her chair. Her expression didn't change, but I felt the shift. Interest cooling. Attention drifting.

I opened my mouth. Nothing came.

The door opened.

Clayton walked in.

He didn't knock. Didn't apologize. He moved to the side of the room and stood with his hands in his pockets, his attention on the screen as though he'd been there the entire time.

"Ms. Reed was just outlining our narrative strategy," he said. His voice was calm. Easy. "The experiential component is crucial, but what makes this campaign particularly effective is the integration of localized micro-influencers in each market. We're not broadcasting. We're embedding."

Miranda's eyes shifted to him.

He stepped forward and gestured to the screen. "Take your Seattle property. Instead of a traditional campaign, we'd partner with ten local voices—chefs, designers, artists—who already have credibility in the communities you want to reach. They don't post about your hotel. They post about the neighborhood. And your property becomes the natural anchor."

I stood there. Frozen.

He looked at me. "Ms. Reed, do you want to walk them through the Portland execution?"

I blinked. My brain caught up. I turned to the next slide and heard my own voice explain the Portland strategy, the words coming automatically now that the path had been cleared.

When the presentation ended, Miranda stood and shook Clayton's hand. Then mine.

"This is exactly what we were hoping for," she said. "Let's move forward."

They left.

The room emptied.

I stood at the head of the table and stared at my laptop screen.

Clayton closed the door.

"You didn't need to do that," I said.

He leaned against the table. "You're right. I could have let you lose the account."

I turned. "I wasn't going to lose it."

"Margot." He said my name quietly. "You lost the room."

My hands curled into fists. "I had it under control."

"No. You didn't." He didn't say it cruelly. He said it like a fact. "And that's fine. It happens. But it happened in front of a client who represents eighteen percent of our projected revenue for the quarter, so I stepped in."

I wanted to argue. I wanted to throw something.

I did neither.

"I'd like to offer you one-on-one mentoring," he said. "High-stakes presentations. Client psychology. How to recover when you lose your thread."

I laughed. It came out sharp. "You want to mentor me."

"Yes."

"No."

He didn't move. "The offer stands."

He left.

I stood in the empty conference room and hated him.

Two days later, I missed a secondary deliverable.

It wasn't a disaster. Just a revised asset list that should have been submitted by end-of-day Tuesday. I submitted it Wednesday morning and told myself it was fine.

At 10:00 a.m., I got a calendar invitation.

**Meeting: Project Review – Harlow & Cross**

**Attendees:** Margot Reed, Clayton Henderson

**Location:** Clayton's Office

I stared at it.

I accepted.

His office was all glass. I could see him from my desk, sitting behind his computer, sleeves rolled up. I watched the clock until 10:00 a.m., then walked over and knocked on the open door.

"Come in," he said without looking up.

I stepped inside. The door clicked shut behind me.

He gestured to the chair across from him. I sat.

He pulled up the asset list on his screen and turned the monitor so I could see it. "Walk me through what happened."

"I missed the deadline. It won't happen again."

"I'm not asking for an apology. I'm asking what happened."

I looked at the screen. "I was managing three deliverables simultaneously. I prioritized the client-facing materials. The internal asset list was lower urgency."

"Except it wasn't." He leaned back. "The asset list feeds directly into the creative brief, which is due tomorrow. So now the creative team is working off incomplete information, which means their draft will need revisions, which compresses our review timeline."

I said nothing.

He wasn't angry. That was the worst part. He was patient.

"This is fixable," he said. "But we need to revise the list tonight and get it to creative by morning. I'd like to work through it with you. Over dinner, since we'll be here late."

I stared at him.

He met my gaze. Steady. Unreadable.

I knew exactly what this was.

I also knew I couldn't say no without looking like I was letting personal history interfere with my job.

"Fine," I said.

He nodded. "I'll pick you up at seven."

"I'll meet you there."

He smiled. Just barely. "Okay."

I stood and walked out.

Sandra was waiting at my desk.

"You good?" she asked.

"Great," I said.

She didn't believe me.
