My Ex-Husband Put My Cowboy on Payroll

Chapter 3

"A missing signature on the delivery acknowledgment does not make a marriage," I told Julian, shoving the document back across the kitchen island.

Julian didn't blink. "It makes the divorce decree contestable."

"Maya is pulling the physical county records right now," I said, turning my focus entirely to Beck. He stood frozen by the hall entrance, the patrol logs clutched in his grip. "Until my lawyer gives me a final answer, no one uses a clerical error to define my status."

Beck stared at the red ink bleeding through the legal seal on the counter. He nodded once. He pulled his hand away from the edge of the wood, stepping back. An invisible line snapped into place between us.

"I don't expect you to have answers you just got hit with," Beck said, his voice flat. "But I don't do gray areas, Vivian. We keep things strictly professional until the ink on your past is actually dry."

He turned and walked down the hall. I watched his shadow stretch across the hardwood. An empty space carved itself out in the center of my chest. He wasn't punishing me. He was drawing a boundary I couldn't cross.

By Tuesday morning, Julian had moved his hard-shell suitcase into the second-floor guest suite.

He didn't push into my private office. He didn't try to dictate my schedule. Instead, he weaponized his memory.

I found a stack of maintenance tickets waiting on my desk at dawn, right next to a steaming mug of black tea. He knew I checked repairs before I ate. When I paced the lobby at noon, arguing with a vendor over the phone, Julian quietly swapped my cold coffee for a fresh cup. At seven, when Tessa brought in the updated marketing budget, Julian intercepted her at the door.

"She hates numbers after sunset," he told Tessa, taking the folder from her hands. "Leave it for tomorrow."

Years ago, I thought that kind of observation meant he loved me. I thought memorizing my routines equaled understanding who I was. Then I remembered the day I handed him my business plan for Juniper Ridge. He knew my coffee order, but he couldn't name the blue-ridge trail ride I wanted to preserve.

At the two o'clock media preview, Julian stood before a dozen local journalists in the main lodge.

"We have aggressive timelines," Julian told a reporter from the Denver Post. "We need to mitigate our opening risks."

I stepped up to the microphone, cutting off the next question. "It is my ranch. It is your investment."

The room went silent. Julian turned his head. His gaze met mine under a camera flash, then returned to the reporter.

"Vivian's opening risk," Julian corrected smoothly. He didn't fight me.

At four, Beck led me into the tack room.

The smell of oiled leather and dust hung heavy in the narrow space. It was the first time we had been alone since last Thursday, when we stood by the south pasture fence and almost crossed a line we couldn't uncross. Back then, he asked if I was ready to change our working relationship. I hesitated, caught between a looming grand opening and a freshly signed divorce paper.

Now, he kept a solid three feet of distance between us.

Beck unrolled a laminated equestrian flowchart and pinned it to a saddle stand. "Guests cannot take the ridge trail without a guide," he said, tapping a red line on the map.

"The brochure already advertises unguided morning rides for experienced riders," I argued, crossing my arms.

"Then reprint the brochure," Beck shot back. "The ridge drops off fifty feet on the west side. One spooked horse, and you have a casualty. Mandatory guides, or I shut the trail down entirely."

I studied the sharp angle of his jaw. He wasn't just talking about the horses. He was establishing control over his domain.

"Fine," I agreed. "Mandatory guides."

He rolled the map back up. He didn't look at me.

"Are you stepping back?" I asked, the words leaving my mouth before I could stop them.

Beck paused. He tossed the rolled map onto a nearby bench. He finally met my gaze, his green eyes piercing through the dim light of the tack room.

"I'm not backing away," Beck said, his voice dropping low. "I'm waiting for you to be able to truly say, 'This is my choice.'"

The sun sank below the mountains, casting long shadows across the operations office. Tessa burst through the door at six, her face flushed red.

She slapped a thick, cream-colored envelope onto my desk.

"The hospital charity gala is tomorrow night," Tessa said, her voice shaking with frustration. "The organizers just sent over the formal seating cards."

I pulled the heavy cardstock from the envelope. Gold foil lettering glared back at me.

Mrs. Julian Cross.

"I called them the second I saw the digital proof," Tessa explained rapidly. "I told them to change it to Vivian Hartley. They refused."

"Why would they refuse a direct correction from my floor manager?" I asked, gripping the edges of the card.

"Because they said Julian's corporate office called an hour ago to confirm the marital title."

I pushed my chair back so hard it slammed into the filing cabinet. I grabbed the card, marched out of the office, and crossed the courtyard to the main lodge.

Julian sat in the leather armchair by the unlit fireplace, typing on his laptop.

I threw the card onto his keyboard. It landed with a sharp smack.

"Who authorized this?" I demanded, my voice echoing off the high timber ceiling.

Julian stopped typing. He didn't reach for the card. He didn't even flinch. He just looked at the gold lettering resting over his keys.

"I didn't call them," Julian said, his tone infuriatingly calm.

"Then why did they print my married name?"

Julian slowly closed his laptop, trapping the place card between the screen and the keyboard. "Because what they have written right now might actually be the name on the legal record."

He reached into his breast pocket and dropped a second gold-foiled card onto the glass table. Under his own name, the guest line read: Mrs. Vivian Cross.
