Chapter 4

The Meatpacking District at 3 a.m. was a graveyard of wealth. Closed storefronts displayed handbags worth more than Nyra's surgery. Empty clubs still smelled of expensive perfume and spilled champagne. I walked past all of it, my feet aching in the heels I'd stuffed into my bag, my uniform replaced by jeans and a coat too thin for November.

Under a streetlight, I stopped and pulled out my notebook.

The night's tips: $340. Minus subway fare: $5.50. Minus GILT's cut: $68. Total: $266.50.

I divided $15,000 by $266.50 in my head. The answer was fifty-six. Fifty-six more nights like this one. Fifty-six more times kneeling on marble floors, fifty-six more smiles I didn't feel, fifty-six more—

I stopped. Fourteen days until the deadline. Even if I worked every single night, it wouldn't be enough.

I wrote the number down anyway. My handwriting was still neat, still architectural, still the handwriting of a woman who had once believed that precision mattered. I drew a line beneath it and kept walking.

Mrs. Nguyen had left the hallway light on. I found Nyra asleep in my bed, one small hand stretched across my pillow like she'd been reaching for me. I lifted her carefully and she stirred, her eyes opening just enough to see my face.

'Mommy,' she whispered.

'I'm here, baby.'

'You promised.' Her fingers found mine. 'You always promise.'

I held her until her breathing deepened again. Then I sat at the kitchen table and stared at the number in my notebook until the sun came up.

Rafael started appearing at the office building three days later.

The first time, I thought it was coincidence. He walked through the third-floor corridor at 6 a.m., earlier than any executive had reason to be there, his footsteps echoing against the marble I'd just finished mopping. He didn't speak. He just looked at me—one long, unreadable look—and kept walking.

The second time, I was cleaning the executive bathroom. I heard his voice in the hallway outside, talking to someone about quarterly reports. The conversation lasted longer than it needed to. When I finally wheeled my cart out, he was still there, leaning against the wall like he'd been waiting.

'You missed a spot,' he said, gesturing to a section of floor I'd already cleaned twice.

I went back and cleaned it again. He watched the entire time.

The third time, I didn't look up. I just kept my head down and moved faster, turned corners before he could round them, took service stairs instead of elevators. But I could feel him tracking me through the building, his presence a weight I carried from floor to floor.

Kehlani noticed.

I saw her watching him watch me one morning in the lobby. Her eyes moved from Rafael's face to mine and back again, calculating something I couldn't name. She smiled. Not at me. At something else entirely.

I pushed my cart toward the service elevator and tried not to think about what that smile meant.

The administrative department was in chaos when I passed it Thursday morning.

A young woman—maybe twenty-five, wearing a blazer that didn't quite fit—stood at her desk surrounded by paperwork, her hands shaking as she spoke into her phone. 'I don't know how it happened. The labels are wrong. The inspector is coming in two hours and if we can't prove the chemicals are stored correctly, we'll fail the safety audit and—'

She stopped. Looked at the papers. Her face crumpled.

I should have kept walking. I had three more floors to clean before my shift ended. I had a lounge shift starting at eight. I had fifty-three more nights to calculate.

But I stopped.

I looked at the paperwork spread across her desk. Invoices. Delivery confirmations. Storage manifests. The error was obvious—someone had transposed two chemical codes during data entry, routing industrial cleaner to the wrong storage room and mislabeling it as disinfectant. The fix was simple: reroute the delivery, correct the manifest, and file an amended storage report before the inspector arrived.

Two minutes. That's all it took to see it.

'Excuse me,' I said quietly.

The woman looked up. Her eyes were red.

'Your chemical codes are transposed. Here and here.' I pointed. 'If you reroute the delivery to Storage Room B and file an amended manifest with these corrections, the inspector won't find a violation.'

She stared at me. 'How did you—'

'I used to do this kind of work,' I said. It wasn't quite true. I'd never done this exact work. But I'd been someone once who understood systems, who could read invoices and manifests and see the places where numbers didn't line up. Prison hadn't erased that. Poverty hadn't either.

The woman grabbed the papers. 'Thank you. God. Thank you.'

I picked up my mop cart and walked away.

I didn't see the man standing in the office doorway behind me. Marcus Webb, department manager, holding a coffee cup and a folder. He didn't say anything. He just watched me disappear down the corridor, then looked at the woman at the desk who was already making the corrections I'd given her.

He wrote something in his folder.

I didn't know about any of it. I just kept walking, my cart wheels rolling across marble that reflected nothing but my own bent shadow.
