Chapter 4

I pushed open the heavy glass door of Monique’s Bridal Boutique. The faint scent of rosewater and expensive vanilla instantly washed over me, a sharp contrast to the cold street outside.

"Run it again!" Maya’s shrill voice pierced the quiet elegance of the massive showroom.

She stood at the polished marble checkout counter, wearing a plush, oversized white robe. She violently slapped a sleek black piece of plastic against the stone surface.

"I have swiped it four times, ma'am," the sales clerk said, her tone strained but aggressively polite. "The terminal consistently says 'Account Frozen'."

"Then type the numbers in manually!" Maya demanded, stamping her bare foot. She turned and waved her manicured hand toward the velvet seating area near the dressing rooms. "Liam! Tell this girl who you are!"

Liam paced nervously near a plush sofa, a smartphone pressed hard against his ear. A thin layer of sweat coated his forehead, ruining his perfectly styled hair.

"Davis, listen to me," Liam barked into the receiver, his voice tight with panic. "I did not authorize a security freeze. I am the primary account holder. Unblock the funds right now."

"Sir, the directive came directly from the majority shareholder," the tiny, tinny voice of the banker leaked from the phone speaker, entirely devoid of sympathy.

"I am the majority!" Liam shouted, drawing stares from the other wealthy patrons. "I control the holding company!"

"Apparently, you do not, Mr. Sterling. The override was executed with biometric authorization. My hands are completely tied."

"Fix it, Davis! I have a vendor waiting!"

"I suggest you secure alternative payment, sir. Good day."

The line went dead with a hollow click.

Liam pulled the phone slowly away from his ear. He aggressively tapped the red button to end the call, his fingers trembling slightly. The sweat on his forehead gathered, a heavy drop sliding down his sharp jawline and soaking into the collar of his ruined suit.

I walked silently across the plush beige carpet, stopping exactly two feet from the marble counter.

"Having trouble at the register?" I asked.

Liam spun around. The remaining color completely drained from his face. His eyes darted from me to the useless black card sitting on the counter, putting the pieces together.

"What are you doing here?" Maya sneered. She crossed her arms defensively, pulling the plush robe tight across her chest. "Are you stalking us now?"

"I do not need to stalk you," I replied, my tone flat. "I get a digital notification every time you attempt to spend my money."

"Your money?" Maya let out a harsh, grating laugh. "You do not have a dime to your name. Liam told me everything. You are a broke charity case he took pity on."

I ignored her completely. My gaze landed on the massive pile of ivory silk and delicate French lace draped over the end of the counter. The boutique's legendary flagship gown.

"Is this the dress?" I asked the clerk, gesturing to the fabric.

"Yes," the clerk replied, glancing nervously between Liam and me. "The custom Chantilly lace ballgown. It is fifty-five thousand dollars."

"You cannot even afford to look at it," Maya mocked, stepping defensively in front of the silk. "Liam is buying it for me. For our wedding."

"Liam cannot even buy you a cup of black coffee right now," I said.

"Cora," Liam warned, stepping out of the seating area and moving toward me. The scent of his expensive cologne mixed heavily with the sharp, sour odor of his nervous sweat. "What exactly did you do to my accounts?"

"I secured my assets," I answered simply.

"Those are *my* corporate funds!"

"You used my holding company to back your massive credit lines," I reminded him, staring directly into his panicked eyes. "I just revoked the privilege."

"You do not have the legal authority to freeze an entire corporate structure!"

"Check your email, Liam. I think you will find I do."

Maya snatched the black card off the marble counter and shoved it forcefully into his chest. "Liam, fix this right now! I want the dress!"

Liam ran a shaking hand through his hair, destroying the expensive cut. "We will go to another shop, Maya. Just put the dress back for today."

"No!" Maya stomped her foot like a spoiled child. "I told my followers I was getting the Monique flagship! I am not leaving this store without it!"

I reached calmly into my leather purse and pulled out a solid white-gold platinum card. The heavy metal caught the light of the massive crystal chandeliers overhead, gleaming with an undeniable weight.

I slid it smoothly across the marble counter.

"I will take the dress," I told the clerk.

Maya let out another laugh, though this one sounded thin, forced, and laced with sudden panic. "Are you insane? That is a fifty-five-thousand-dollar gown. Your bank will laugh in your face."

Liam stared dead at the platinum card resting on the stone. His eyes widened to the size of saucers. He recognized the intricate crest embossed in the top corner—the insignia of the city's most exclusive private reserve bank. A bank that required a minimum liquid deposit of fifty million dollars just to open a checking account.

"Where did you get that?" Liam demanded, his voice dropping to a hoarse, terrified whisper.

"Ring it up," I instructed the clerk, ignoring my husband.

The clerk picked up the heavy card. She slid it through the terminal with practiced ease.

A soft chime echoed through the quiet boutique.

*Approved.*

A long receipt began to print, the white paper feeding out of the machine in a steady, victorious stream.

"No!" Maya shrieked. She lunged awkwardly toward the counter, trying to physically grab the silk gown away from the clerk. "That is my dress! You cannot let her buy it!"

Liam grabbed Maya's arm, yanking her back with brutal force. "Stop it. You are making a massive scene."

"She is stealing my wedding dress!"

I signed the merchant copy with a quick flourish and handed the pen back to the clerk. "Is the boutique manager available?"

An older woman in a razor-sharp black suit stepped out from the back office, having heard the commotion. "I am the manager. How can I assist you, ma'am?"

"Do you have a pair of heavy fabric shears?" I asked.

The manager blinked, clearly surprised by the strange request. "Yes, of course. We use them for alterations."

"Bring them here."

The manager reached under the counter and produced a pair of heavy, solid silver scissors.

"What are you doing?" Liam asked, his chest heaving under his suit jacket.

I picked up the shears. The metal handles felt cold and incredibly solid against my fingers.

"Bring the dress forward," I ordered the clerk.

The young girl nervously pushed the mountain of pristine ivory silk toward the very edge of the marble counter. I grabbed a thick handful of the delicate Chantilly lace hem. The fabric was incredibly soft, woven with hundreds of tiny, hand-sewn seed pearls.

"Cora, put the scissors down," Liam commanded, trying to sound authoritative. He took a half-step forward, raising a hand. "You are making a fool of yourself."

"I am making a point," I corrected.

I opened the shears wide, positioned the heavy steel blades directly over the intricate floral embroidery, and clamped down hard.

*Riiiiiiip.*

The loud, violently destructive sound of tearing silk echoed across the entire showroom.

"Oh my god!" Maya screamed. She covered her mouth with both hands, her eyes wide with absolute horror. "Stop it!"

I moved the scissors up a few inches, grabbed another handful of the pristine white fabric, and cut again.

*Snip. Rip.*

A massive chunk of the priceless lace hem severed from the gown and fell to the floor. It pooled around my leather shoes like discarded, cheap trash.

I did not stop. I sliced brutally through the tulle underlayers, completely destroying the structural integrity of the massive train.

Liam stood completely paralyzed. He stared dead at the platinum card still resting on the counter, then looked at the destroyed fabric piling up on the floor.

Another drop of sweat slid off his jawline, soaking into the collar of his ruined silk shirt. The horrifying reality of his situation was finally crashing down on his shoulders. The frozen corporate accounts. The impossible, hyper-exclusive credit card. The sheer, terrifying confidence radiating from my posture.

"You are crazy!" Maya sobbed hysterically. She buried her face into Liam's shoulder, clutching his jacket like a lifeline. "Liam, do something! She just ruined my dress!"

Liam did not comfort her. He did not wrap his arms around her shaking frame. He just kept staring at me, his eyes hollow.

"Who are you?" Liam asked, his voice entirely stripped of its usual sickening arrogance.

"I am the woman you just tried to throw out on the street," I said.

I tossed the heavy shears onto the marble counter. They landed with a sharp, heavy clatter that made Maya violently flinch.

"Box it up," I instructed the manager.

The older woman did not hesitate for a second. She expertly folded the ruined gown, carefully tucking the shredded ends inside the remaining layers of tulle. She placed the destroyed dress into a massive, matte-black garment box and secured the lid with a thick silk ribbon.

I picked up my platinum card and slid it safely back into my purse.

The manager stepped around the counter. She held the large black box out to me, offering it formally with both hands. Her posture was perfectly straight, her expression entirely professional, but a glimmer of deep, unspoken respect shone in her eyes.

"Your dress, Miss Sterling," the manager said.
