Chapter 4

The rain started at two in the morning.

I woke to the sound of water dripping onto the floor beside my bed. I sat up, groggy, and looked at the ceiling. A dark stain spread across the plaster above me, and fat drops fell steadily from a crack I hadn't noticed before.

I moved the bed away from the wet spot, grabbed a bucket from the supply closet, and set it under the leak. The metallic ping of water hitting metal filled the small room. I sat on the edge of the bed and waited.

Twenty minutes later, someone knocked.

Dara Simms stood in the doorway again, her hair damp from the rain, her expression apologetic in a way that was starting to feel rehearsed.

"Lily. I'm so sorry. The roof—" She gestured at the ceiling. "It's an old section. The storm found a weak point. We can't patch it until morning, and even then it'll take a few days to dry out properly."

I looked at her. "Another relocation."

Dara nodded quickly and held out a folded paper. "Guest quarters. One floor down. It's the only available room right now."

I took the paper. It was typed, formal, signed by the same facilities manager whose name I still didn't recognize. I read it twice.

"One floor down," I repeated.

Dara shifted her weight. Her eyes went slightly distant for a moment—the look of someone receiving a mind-link message—and then refocused. "Yes. I know it's disruptive. The room is ready. I can help you move your things."

I packed my bag for the third time in two weeks. Dara carried my spare blanket. We descended the stairs in silence, the sound of rain drumming against the packhouse windows.

The mind-link opened before we reached the second-floor landing.

*"She's one floor below me. One floor. The ceiling between us is—what, eight inches of timber and plaster? I can hear her footsteps. I will hear her footsteps every night. This is fine. This is a completely normal infrastructure response to a roof leak that definitely occurred naturally."*

I stopped mid-step. Dara glanced back.

"You okay?"

"Fine," I said. I kept walking.

The new guest room was identical to the one I'd just left, except the window faced west instead of east. Dara showed me the heating controls again, apologized twice more, and left.

I set my bag on the bed and looked up at the ceiling.

Above me, I heard a single footstep. Then silence.

The mind-link hummed, faint but constant: *"Don't pace. Pacing is suspicious. Sit down. Read something. Stop thinking about the fact that she is directly below you. Moon Goddess, her scent is coming through the floorboards."*

I pulled the two relocation orders from my jacket pocket—the heating unit failure and now the roof leak—and laid them side by side on the desk. I studied them. Same facilities manager signature. Same phrasing. Same apologetic tone.

I folded them both into precise squares and tucked them back into my pocket.

Then I lay down and stared at the ceiling until the rain stopped.

The next morning, I saw Cole in the corridor outside the packhouse dining hall.

Raphael's Beta was leaning against the wall, arms crossed, watching the morning shift of warriors file past. When he saw me, his expression didn't change. But his mouth curved—just slightly—at one corner.

The smirk.

I walked past him without stopping. Behind me, I heard Raphael's voice through the mind-link, sharp and internal: *"Stop smirking, Cole, or I will reassign you to the northern border in January. I see you. I know what that face means."*

I turned the corner and allowed myself a very small smile.

Two days later, a visiting pack arrived for joint training drills.

They were from the western territories—a mid-sized pack with a reputation for aggressive expansion. Their Alpha, a man named Garrett, had been negotiating a resource-sharing agreement with Silvercrest for months. The drills were supposed to demonstrate cooperative capability.

I was assigned to supply management for the session: water stations, equipment checks, perimeter setup. Standard Omega work. I stayed at the yard's edge and kept my head down.

The visiting pack's Gamma caught my attention halfway through the morning.

His name was Magnus Vargas. Broad build, scarred knuckles, eyes that tracked movement with a calculation I recognized from Ironveil. He watched Raphael the way wolves watch a rival they're measuring for a fight.

And he watched me.

I was refilling a water station when the mind-link opened—not Raphael's voice this time, but someone else's. The connection was thinner, less stable, like tuning into a frequency I wasn't supposed to reach.

Magnus's thoughts hit me in fragments: *"—corner her after dark—wolfsbane cloth in the supply shed—leverage against Montgomery—his alliance-building is a territorial threat—"*

I straightened slowly, the water jug still in my hand. Magnus was twenty feet away, talking to one of his pack's Deltas. He wasn't looking at me.

I set the jug down and walked onto the training field.

The drills were in full formation—two lines of warriors running an obstacle course, Raphael and Garrett observing from the center. I crossed the packed earth and joined the rotation without asking permission.

Magnus frowned when he saw me. He stepped into formation three wolves behind me.

I waited until we reached the sparring segment. The drill required pairs. Magnus moved toward me deliberately, his expression pleasant.

"Need a partner, Omega?" he asked.

I turned and slammed my elbow into his jaw.

The impact was clean, precise, angled upward. Magnus dropped to the dirt, his head snapping back, blood on his teeth. Forty wolves went still.

I stood over him, my breath steady, my wolf humming low and satisfied beneath my ribs.

"No," I said quietly.

The silence lasted three seconds.

Then Raphael shifted.

I had never seen him shift before. The transformation was not gradual—it was an eruption. His massive black wolf tore free from him with a force that cracked the stone beneath his feet, easily twice the size of any wolf on the field. His Alpha aura hit the assembled wolves like a physical weight. Several of them took an involuntary step back.

Raphael's wolf pinned Magnus by the throat. Held him there. Magnus went limp immediately, his wolf submitting in pure survival instinct.

On the nearby table, the alliance contract lay open, weighted down by a stone. Raphael's wolf turned his head and swiped one deliberate claw across the parchment. The contract shredded.

He shifted back to human form, standing over Magnus, his voice flat and cold.

"Take him. Leave."

Garrett, the visiting Alpha, opened his mouth. Closed it. Nodded once. Two of his Deltas hauled Magnus to his feet. The visiting pack filed out of the compound in silence.

Raphael didn't look at me. He walked off the field, his shoulders rigid, his hands clenched at his sides.

But through the mind-link, I heard everything.

*"She knew before I did. She protected herself. My wolf is going to break out of my chest. I need to not look at her right now or I will mark her in front of forty wolves. She's standing three feet away. I can smell the jasmine. Moon Goddess, she's perfect. Don't turn around. Do not turn around."*

I stood on the training field, Magnus's blood still on the dirt, and folded my hands at my sides.

Cole, leaning against a post at the yard's edge, was smirking again.
