Chapter 2

Tucker caught me at the pack gate before I could leave Ironveil.

I was carrying my single bag—clothes, a few books, the reassignment papers folded in my jacket pocket—and walking toward the iron arch that marked the boundary. The morning was cold. My breath misted in the air. I heard his footsteps behind me and didn't turn around.

"Lily."

His voice had lost the practiced warmth. It was clipped now, stripped down to something harder. I stopped but didn't face him. I kept my eyes on the gate.

"We need to talk," he said.

I turned slowly. Tucker stood three feet away, his Delta insignia still polished but hanging slightly crooked on its chain. His jaw was tight. The rejection pain had faded enough for him to stand upright, but I could see the residual tension in his shoulders.

"About what?" I asked.

He made eye contact—too deliberate, too direct. The tell I'd noticed years ago and never named aloud. My wolf stirred faintly, a low hum of awareness.

"You're going to withdraw the rejection vow," Tucker said. "Quietly. We'll arrange a private settlement. You leave the Banquet incident uncontested, and I don't file a formal complaint."

I blinked. "A complaint about what?"

"About the fact that you used an illegal mind-link intrusion to steal my planned rejection." His voice was flat, matter-of-fact. "I'll tell the allied packs you're a rogue sympathizer with unauthorized psychic abilities. That you've been spying on ranked wolves. By the time Silvercrest figures out what you are, no pack will take you."

The threat hung in the cold air between us. I looked at him for a long moment. His eyes were steady, his posture confident. He thought this would work. He thought I would fold.

I picked up my bag.

"File the complaint," I said quietly.

Tucker's expression flickered—surprise, then anger. "You don't know what you're doing."

"I know exactly what I'm doing." My voice stayed level, precise. "You're going to tell people I have a mind-link I can't control. That's true. You're going to tell them I heard your plan before you could execute it. Also true. And when they ask why you were planning to reject an Omega publicly at a Pack Banquet to secure a political mating you'd been negotiating in secret for months, you're going to have to explain that part too."

His jaw clenched. "You have no proof."

"I have your thoughts," I said. "Word for word. Timestamps. Morgan's father's confirmation of alliance terms. The phrase you tested—'our bond has run its course.' You rehearsed it seventeen times."

Tucker went very still.

I adjusted the strap of my bag. "File the complaint. I'll answer every question they ask."

I walked through the gate. He didn't follow.

The mind-link hummed faintly as I crossed into neutral territory, a low vibration I was learning to recognize as my wolf's satisfaction. I didn't look back.

---

I arrived at the Silvercrest joint training compound on a grey morning two days later.

The gate was flanked by warriors—two Deltas, broad-shouldered and watchful. They assessed me in the span of a breath: Omega rank, single bag, no escort. One of them jerked his chin toward the main yard.

"Office is across the yard. Get your assignment papers there."

I nodded and stepped through.

The training yard was massive—packed earth, obstacle courses, a sparring ring at the far end. Morning drills were already underway. Wolves in formation ran laps, their breath misting in the cold air. The sound of boots on dirt and shouted commands filled the space.

I took three steps onto the yard and the mind-link detonated.

It wasn't gradual. It was immediate, overwhelming, a new consciousness slamming into mine with enough force that I stumbled mid-step. My wolf surged—not a growl this time, but something deeper, a recognition that bypassed thought entirely.

Then the scent hit me.

Black pine and smoke. Sharp, clean, unmistakable.

I looked up.

Raphael Montgomery stood at the yard's edge, arms crossed, watching the drills. He was taller than I'd expected, his presence so gravitational that the space around him felt heavier. His expression was stone-cold, unreadable. He didn't look at me.

But I heard him.

*"There she is. My mate. Don't let her see it."*

The thought was so clear, so unguarded, that for a moment I forgot to breathe. My wolf went absolutely still, listening.

Raphael's gaze tracked across the yard and landed on me. His face didn't change. His voice, when he spoke, was flat and cutting.

"The new transfer arrived late," he announced to the yard. "Twenty extra laps before assignment."

A few wolves glanced over. I saw the flicker of amusement, the dismissal. An Omega being disciplined on her first day. Routine.

I set my bag down by the gate and started running.

The mind-link stayed open the entire time.

*"Lap three. She's not slowing down. Good. No—not good. Don't watch her. Everyone's watching you watch her."*

I kept my pace steady, my breathing even. My left ankle ached—an old injury from Ironveil that flared in cold weather—but I didn't favor it visibly.

*"Lap nine. She's favoring her left side. Stop the laps. You cannot stop the laps. They'll ask why."*

I rounded the corner of the yard. Raphael hadn't moved. His arms stayed crossed, his posture rigid.

*"Lap fourteen. Moon Goddess, she's going to finish all twenty. Stop staring. You are staring. Fix your face."*

I finished lap twenty and stopped in front of him, my breath coming hard but controlled. Sweat dampened my hairline. I met his eyes.

His expression was ice. "Office is behind you. Don't be late again."

His voice in my head was frantic, spiraling: *"She smells like jasmine. White jasmine and rain. My wolf is clawing at me. I will burn this entire compound down if anyone touches her."*

I nodded once, picked up my bag, and walked toward the office.

Behind me, I heard him bark an order at the Delta formation. His spoken voice was sharp, authoritative, completely controlled.

The mind-link was still open. I heard every word he didn't say.
