Chapter 1

My daughter was told her mother was dead.

I found the teacher who told her that was living in my house.

My husband had changed the smart lock on our front door.

But she could get in with a single fingerprint—like she owned the place.

1

I’d just gotten back from a business trip when I saw my daughter’s teacher, Sophia, strolling out of my house in the suburbs.

I froze, sending a quick message to my husband, Liam Harper: “Send me the code for the front door.”

He called back instantly. “Honey, where are you? I’ll come get you.”

My eyes fixed on the confident sway of her hips as she walked away. I kept my voice even. “I noticed the smart lock code was changed, so I took a little walk. I’m not far now.”

The call ended, and the door swung open. Only then did I realize Liam was home. A knot of unease tightened in my gut.

I’d seen it myself. Sophia, the teacher, bringing my daughter, Mia, home. She’d unlocked my front door, stepped inside, and hadn’t emerged for two hours.

Two full hours. More than enough time for a lot to happen. I never thought I could be this calm, just waiting. I also never imagined she would linger in my house for so long.

A preschool teacher with a class of over twenty kids. If every student demanded a two-hour “home visit,” how would she ever manage? Or… was my daughter getting some kind of special treatment?

I pinched the bridge of my nose, trying to ward off the headache I felt coming on. Don’t overthink this. I’d wanted to surprise Mia, so I’d gone straight to her school after my flight landed.

But her teacher, citing some absurd level of caution, refused to let me see my own daughter, insisting she bring Mia home herself.

In any case, it showed she was responsible. I shouldn’t rush to judgment.

With that thought, I forced my guard down and melted into Liam’s enthusiastic embrace.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my four-year-old daughter sitting quietly on the rug, fiddling with a doll. Mia didn’t scramble into my arms the way she usually did.

She just studied me with a distant gaze, like I was a stranger who had wandered into her home.

My heart seized. What in the world was going on? I kicked off my heels and reached for her. But Mia shrank back, asking hesitantly, “Are you my mommy?”

I froze. Is that what a daughter asks her own mother?

She was only four. I’d only been away for two months, and we video-chatted every single day. How could she not recognize me?

A thick fog of doubt rolled in, suffocating me. I pressed my lips into a thin line, forcing a gentle smile. “Sweetheart, it’s Mommy. Why don’t you recognize me?”

I searched her face for an answer, but she just bit her lip, the confusion in her eyes refusing to clear. I could only tell myself she hadn’t seen me in a while. She just needed time.

After I soothed her, I glanced around the living room. That strange feeling returned.

This was my house. So why did it suddenly feel so alien?

In the two months I was gone, had someone invaded my life and remade my home? Or… was there something wrong with my memory?

As my mind raced, Liam leaned in, his breath warm on my neck. “Honey, why didn’t you tell me you were coming back early?”
