Chapter 3

The phone call comes on a Wednesday. My landlord's voice is tight. Apologetic. He says there's been a complaint. Legal issues. He can't have me here anymore. I need to be out by the end of the month.

I hang up without arguing. I know what this is. I've seen this pattern before.

The bank account freezes two days later. I'm at the ATM when the screen tells me to contact my branch. I don't bother. I withdraw the forty-three dollars still available and walk away.

Owen finds me in the back room that afternoon, counting what's left in my wallet. He doesn't ask questions. He just says he's sorry. The shop's been struggling. He can't keep me on anymore. Someone made him an offer he couldn't refuse to sell the building. He has to close.

I nod. I tell him I understand. I do. This isn't his fault.

But I know whose fault it is.

I find work at a small alteration shop in Bed-Stuy. The owner is an older Korean woman named Mrs. Kim who looks at my scar and my resume—sparse, under a name that isn't quite mine—and hires me anyway. She needs someone who can do invisible hems and complex repairs. I can do both.

The shop smells like steam and sizing. My hands remember the language of fabric. The pull of thread through silk. The way a seam wants to lie flat if you coax it right. I work in the back room, away from customers. Mrs. Kim doesn't ask why. She just brings me coffee in the afternoon and tells me I'm doing good work.

I don't know that Desmond arranged this. I don't know that he quietly routed a grant to Mrs. Kim's shop two weeks before I walked through her door. I just know that when I needed ground beneath my feet, it was there.

The session request comes through Claire's office. A Tuesday evening slot. I almost cancel. But something in the wording makes me go.

When I arrive, it's not Claire waiting in the office overlooking Central Park. It's Desmond.

I stop in the doorway. He rises from his chair. We look at each other for a long moment.

"I'm sorry," he says quietly. "I should have told you sooner."

I step inside and close the door. I don't sit. I stand with my back to the window and wait.

"Beckett Hughes has come back into your life," Desmond says. His voice is careful. Measured. "I've been monitoring the situation. The investigation is nearly complete."

"Investigation," I repeat. The word sits strange in my mouth.

"Into what was done to you," he says. "The DNA report. The photographs. All of it."

I don't ask why he's done this. I don't ask what it cost him. I just look at him—really look at him—and see the shape of three years I didn't know were being held.

"You've been here a long time," I say. "Haven't you."

It's not quite a question.

Desmond doesn't answer. But he doesn't look away either. His eyes are dark and steady. There's no expectation in them. No demand. Just presence.

I leave without saying thank you. But I don't forget the way he stood there, holding space I didn't know I needed.

Beckett finds me outside my apartment building three nights later.

I'm coming home from the alteration shop. It's past nine. The streetlights cast long shadows on the pavement. I see him before he sees me—standing near the entrance, hands in his pockets, breath fogging in the cold air.

I could turn around. Walk away. But I'm tired of running.

I approach the door. He steps into my path.

"We need to talk," he says.

I move to step around him. His hand closes on my arm.

The contact is sudden. Shocking. The first time he's touched me in three years. His fingers are warm through my coat sleeve. His grip is firm but not painful.

"Where is my daughter?" His voice cracks on the last word. "Just tell me where she is. That's all I want to know."

I look down at his hand. Then up at his face. His eyes are desperate. Searching. He still believes every lie. He still thinks I took something from him.

"She's where you put her," I say.

The words come out quiet. Flat. Heavy as gravestones.

I pull my arm free. His hand falls away. I walk past him and unlock the door. I don't look back.

Behind me, Beckett stands on the sidewalk. The cold wind cuts through his expensive coat. My words are lodged in him like a splinter he cannot locate.

Where you put her.

He doesn't understand. Not yet. But somewhere deep in his chest, something has begun to crack.
